disclose information about his current second job, but can
elaborate on his time spent pulling staples out of couches
for an upholsterer. Daniel has managed to get through
his whole life without working a single day, while
Ricky's time as a landscaper will be fondly remembered.

Daniel admits to a need to look at organs and keyboards
everytime he walks past a music shop, while Ricky spends

readily confessing to a weakness for Destiny's Child-type
music. <br><br>Heading toward headlining<br><br>Canvas
can lay claim to having toured with the cream of the
Kiwi music crop (Fur Patrol, Zed and Weta among
others), and as these bands leave to conquer overseas, the
gap in Kiwi pop-rock widens. This is where Canvas
step in, to fill the gap and in doing so move from
support act to headlining attraction. The plan includes
the release of a second EP by the end of this year.
<br><br>So that’s the plan for the near-future - but what of
world rock’n’roll domination?<br>Daniel is loving the
Canvas experience, and while Ricky has rock-star dreams
Mike is more philosophical when it comes to the future
of the band. <br><br>"It's good to have a high goal
but there's so many things you've got to aim for
first before you start thinking about that sort of
stuff". Those things at the moment include promoting
current single ‘Sunday’ and getting the Canvas name known
in every corner of New Zealand. And once that’s
achieved, who knows? Kiwi bands are on a role at the
moment, both here and overseas – watch this space.

Christchurch-born, Wellington-based, and were in Auckland to promote
their single ‘Tina’. <br><br>Sarah Ash, for TEARAWAY,
talked popstars, cheesy dance music and dodgy jobs with
‘melodic-rockers’ Canvas. <br> <br><br>It was during a particularly
constructive Maths period in high school that Mike Carpinter
and Ricky Boyd came up with the name Canvas, and
under this name that they entered the 1996 rockquest.
<br><br>“It’s not a very flash story, we can make up a better
one if you want”, Mike offers. Three years later, the
‘Open Up’ EP was released and a second video grant from
NZ on Air (for the song ‘Sunday’) has just been
received. <br><br>Ricky and Mike have been performing
together for nine years, since Form 3, with Daniel Fulton
joining the line-up at the start of June 2001.
<br><br>Contrary to popular opinion which said he left the band
after being approached by hyperactive teenyboppers,
previous bass player Greg Pawsey one day came to the
decision that he wasn't able to commit 100%. He does
however feature in the video for ‘Tina’, which was only
fair after two years of build-up and work towards it.
<br><br>Melodic rock<br><br>Biographical details aside, it’s time
to talk about the music – pop-rock? And formed under
which musical influences? The boys reel off a healthy
mix of inspirations, from Daniel's choices of the
Beatles and heavy 60s rock to Mike's Brit-pop orientated
line-up and Ricky's indie-rock American outfits. These
elements fuse together to create what their website
describes as 'power pop'...agree or disagree? Ricky defines
the Canvas sound as "melodic, Brit-pop...wouldn't say
power pop". <br><br>Mike offers the term "melodic rock"
which is agreed on by the other members, and say that
their music has changed from the days of pop-based
songs to simpler, more direct rock. <br><br><br>This
style of rock remains in the hands of Canvas
themselves, as at this stage they are willing to wait for the
right record deal to come along. The music is priority
– and they say that whoever likes their music, from
an 80-yr-old grandmother to a 12-yr-old girl, that’s
fine with them because “we don’t write for a certain
