Greetings! I hope your holidays were inspiring, refreshing and restful.
I am still struggling to balance the demands of full-time work, family
and organ practice, the latter unfortunately taking the back burner.
However, this past Sunday I substituted at Homecrest Presbyterian
Church, Bklyn, where I played an improvisation on hymn-tunes for the
prelude. Among the hymns I picked were "Ring Out The Old, Ring In the
New" (Grenoble church melody/Tennyson); "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep
Silence" (Trad. French melody, words from St. James Liturgy), and "So
Vyunom Ja Khozhu" -- "I am walking around with a woven rope", a
Russian folk song. Ok, that last one was not a hymn, but it's a lovely
melody. It was fun, and I definitely want to improve my
improvisational skills and techniques.
This Thursday, Jan 19, David Shuler is inviting us to his recital,
STYLUS PHANTASTICUS. It's at the church of St. Luke in the Fields,
NYC, 8:00 pm. I plan to be there. If anyone would like to meet up
before the concert for dinner or a drink, please let me know!
David Shuler picks very interesting and unusual selections for his
music offerings at the church, and I am very much looking forward to
Thursday. Also, the organ at St. Luke was designed by my teacher, Dr.
William Entriken, during his tenure there. For more info, please go
