* Latvian organ star Iveta Apkalna won the prestigious ECHO-Klassik
prize in the "Instrumentalist of the Year" category. Since its
foundation in 1994 the "ECHO-Klassik, Instrumentalist of the Year" had
never gone to an organist. Kudos to Iveta!

* The importance of good planning
Recently I had an opportunity to spend several days in Marlboro,
Vermont. Marlboro is very close to the beautiful town of Brattleboro,
home to many fine organs and the factory buildings of the Estey Organ
Company. I went to the website of the Estey Organ Museum and couldn't
find the visiting hours info, perhaps due to not looking thoroughly
enough. Well, I trusted to luck which as we know is not a smart thing
to do, especially when it comes to visiting pipe organ places. On a
Tuesday, I came to Brattleboro to learn that the museum is open on
weekends only. Roaming the grounds among the famed slate-covered
buildings, I took some pictures and a souvenir -- a piece of gray
slate that is lying on the ground in piles around the aging factory.
Quite sad. But now I have something to remember it by, even though I
never gained entrance to the actual museum.

This is the facade of Estey opus 300 at First Baptist Church.

I got inside, but couldn't play it since the organist was not present.
Yet another lesson in the importance of calling ahead.

* Concerts in Martinikerk, Groningen, The Netherlands
There is a wonderful concerts series ongoing since 1949, on the
historic Arp Schnitger organ. The organ is the only instrument in the
world that still possesses orginal 32-feet prestant pipes originally
manufactured by the great Arp Schnitger in the years 1690/91.
