Greetings!

I've had a little organ encounter recently with the organ at the Duke
Chapel, Durham, NC. I was there for a one-day business trip, and on
our way back my colleagues and I had some free time, so we stopped by
the Duke campus. I really wish I'd have thought this through better
and tried to arrange something, for we got to see the beautiful organ
but not to hear it. The Duke Chapel is really amazing.

Recently I learned of an EMI CD featuring the late Dr. Healey Willan,
Organist, composer and conductor, playing his own work.

My preliminary attempts through a music shop and Ebay have not been
successful. Has anyone any information, or even better, suggestions,
on how to obtain a copy? A correspondent from the UK is also
interested in obtaining this.

Dear Friends in NY,
I hope to see you tonight at this performance.
--Lana

The Queen's Chamber Band plays Bach!

Johann Sebastian Bach's 323rd Birthday coincides with Good Friday ,
so our annual celebration comes a little late this year.
Organist/conductor Claudia Dumschat leads her Transfiguration Choir of
Men & Boys, the Camerata, The Queen's Chamber Band and soloists in
Bach's cantata , Liebster Gott, wann werd' ich sterben?(BWV 8).
Countertenor Marshall Coid takes a solo turn with two selections from
the notebook compiled by Bach's second wife Anna Magdalena. Violinist
Robert Zubrycki and 'cellist Peter Seidenberg join harpsichordist
Elaine Comparone for the Sonata in F minor for Violin and Obbligato
Harpsichord (BWV 1018). The versatile Dr. Dumschat turns to the
magnificent Arnold Schwartz Memorial Organ for a performance of the
Passacaglia & Thema Fugatum in C minor (BWV 581). Elaine Comparone
plays The Concerto in the Italian Style (BWV 971) on her Frank Hubbard
Franco-Flemish harpsichord. Finally, The Queen's Chamber Band
assembles for a performance of the rarely played Concerto in F Major
for Harpsichord, Winds & Strings (BWV 1057), Bach's own alternate
version of his Fourth Brandenburg Concerto in G Major. In the latter
work, Bach assigns the florid solo part to a violin while in the F
Major version, the harpsichord emerges as soloist.

The Church of the Transfiguration, known nationwide as The Little
Church Around the Corner", is located at One East 29th Street between
Fifth and Madison Avenues in New York City.

Tickets: $25; Seniors & Students: $15

(Available at the door from 7 PM on the evening of the performance.)

Dear Friends,

Here is a press release from Tim Stanley PR detailing a special poetry/music
performance to help a historic church.

===========

POETIC BID TO HELP RESTORE
AILING INNER-CITY CHURCH IN BRISTOL

An evening of poetry and music comes to an inner-city church in Bristol next
month in a bid to raise money towards the £350,000 cost of restoring the
ailing 107-year-old building.

All Hallows Church in All Hallows Road in the Easton area of the city is the
venue for Generations, an evening of poems and music designed to appeal to
people of every age.

It will be presented by The Birdcome Poetry Group, six local women whose
backgrounds in drama, teaching and literature mean they are well-placed to
select and perform the most entertaining and moving poems written by British
poets.

"Some are hilarious, others are poignant, all are entertaining," says
Jessica Smith, one of the founder members of the group.

At All Hallows they will recite verses by poets ranging from William
Shakespeare and Rudyard Kipling to Lewis Carroll and Michel Rosen. The poems
will be interspersed with musical items on similar themes under the
direction of Kenneth Smith, the now retired director of music at All Saints
Clifton, All Hallows' sister church.

Generations is the latest in a series of events planned to help raise the
money needed to repair the church building in Easton. It is suffering the
effects of mining in the last century and a nearby railway line which
together are said to be the cause of extensive cracking and the movement of
stones in walls and arches in the church.

The cost of remedial work, including the installation of new heaters, is
expected to total almost £350,000 of which £268,500 has been raised or
promised to date.

Tickets for Generations at All Hallows Church on Friday, May 30 at 7.30 pm
cost £8 (£6 concessions, £1 for under-16s) to include a buffet supper. They
are available from Jessica Smith, telephone 0117 9249203 (email
tandysmith@...), Carol Sapsed, telephone 01275 852727 (email
birdcombe@...), or on the door, subject to availability.

MICHAEL T. C. HEY is the son of Thomas and Christine Hey and a junior at
Waukesha West
High School of Waukesha, Wisconsin. He began playing piano by ear at age nine
and
began lessons at age ten. At age eleven, Charlotte Villwock, Music Director at
St. William's
Catholic Church, Waukesha, recognized his talent and asked him to serve as the
accompanist for the adult choir; a position Michael gladly accepted. In May
2002, at age
12, Michael began organ studies with Sr. Mary Jane Wagner. Since September
2005, he
has been studying piano with Curtis Stotlar at the Wisconsin Conservatory of
Music.

In the past few years, Michael Hey has performed in many events, including organ
and
piano concerts at churches, colleges, and other venues throughout southeast
Wisconsin.
He has also participated in concerts of liturgical music affiliated with the
Archdiocese of
Milwaukee and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.

In June 2006, Michael received the Service Playing Certificate from the American
Guild of
Organists and National Association of Pastoral Musicians. This past April,
Michael took
second place in the American Guild of Organists' Twin Cities Chapter
competition. He has
also performed in master classes with Heinrich Walther of Germany, Dr. Del
Disselhorst of
the University of Iowa, Yoon-Mi Lim, 2005 first prize winner of NYACOP,
fortepianist
Steven Lubin, Jennifer Pascual, music director of St. Patrick's cathedral, New
York City, and
Paul Jacobs, organ department chair of the Juilliard School.

THE CHURCH is located at 2319 East Kenwood Boulevard on Milwaukee's "East Side,"
It is
directly across the street from the UWM Student Union Building and is the first
building
West of the Peck School for the Arts Building. There is a small parking lot.
On-street
parking is available or paid parking can be found in the garage beneath the
Student
Union.

THE ORGAN is Austin Organ Co. Op. 1628 of 1928 as rebuilt most recently (2002)
by John-
Paul Buzard Organbuilders. IV-59. The console is visible - front and center.

On a personal note; I have taken the opportunity to listen to Michael rehearse
in the

(and he's
only 17!!) -- I am delighted by his sense of color and use of carefully-chosen
registrations. I think this is going to be a wonderful recital and I encourage
you to attend if
you are in the area.

Travels

Dr Carol Williams has just returned from concerts in Europe. Firstly, at the
ancient town of Killaloe in Ireland. Killaloe used to be once the capital of
Ireland -- it nestles on the river on the east coast of Ireland and makes a
favorite holiday destination. Dr. Williams performed at St. Flannan's
Cathesdral to celebrate the renovation of the organ. The Cathedral was built
about 1200 by Donal Mor O' Brien -- a direct descendant of St. Flannan and
the great Brian Boru. The Cathedral is a glorious example of Romanesque and
Gothic architecture. The first date of an organ in the Cathedral was in
1782. The present organ was built by Nicholson and has recently been
up-dated by Stephen Adams.

Then, on to Luxembourg to perform at St. Martin's Church in Dudelange. This
was to launch the CD "Carol Williams Plays" which was recorded on the
instrument. A representative from the US Embasey attended the launch
concert.

Then to the north of England for the Lancaster Organ Festival. The festival
was held at the elegant Victorian Ashton Hall which is part of Lancaster
Town Hall. The hall houses a fine Norman & Beard organ which is undergoing
restoration. Almost 100 years old, the organ is a true British gem with
superb acoustics.

Ludwigsburger Gärtner-Duo mit Konzert bei Kerzenlicht im Kirchenkeller der
Friedenskirche Ludwigsburg

Zwei Violoncelli unter der Schirmherrschaft von Ministerpräsident Günther H.
Oettinger

Nothas in München teil.
Festivalintendanten in Deutschland. Viele erfolgreiche Konzerte im In- und
Ausland, mit zwei Violoncelli Solo, oder mit Orchester / Orgel / Klavier /
Cembalo, Staatsempfänge auf internationaler Ebene, zahlreiche Rundfunk- und
Fernseh-Live-Auftritte, schnittfreie Plattenaufnahmen, CD-Einspielungen,

Carol Williams has just performed concerts on the great organ in
Methuen, MA, and for the 100th Anniversary of the Ocean Grove organ in
Ocean Grove, NJ. Both concerts were filmed for the TourBus DVD
series. More information can be found at www.CarolWilliamsNow.com As
well as her concerts at these venues, Carol Williams interviewed
Edward Sampson, President of the Methuen Memorial Music Society, and
he gave the fascinating account of the history of this great organ. At
Ocean Grove, Carol interviewed Gordon Turk and John Shaw who told
about the celebrations of the Ocean Grove organ.

FYI

The Vivian Major Robinson classical music concert series is a
bi-annual event in memory of a local musician who left a lasting
musical legacy in Lancaster, the surrounding region and the nation.
The concert is named in honor of Vivian Major Robinson. Through an
endowment in perpetuity from a former student, the Lancaster County
Council of the Arts is sponsoring the concert series.

Born in Greer, Robinson was the daughter of W. B. and Janie Elizabeth
Craig Major. According to an article in the Lancaster News by
Elizabeth Mobley on October 2, 1994, Robinson said, "My mother was
from Lancaster, and we used to visit Grandpa Craig here." It was her
grandfather, John Edgar Craig, who heard her, when she was five or six
years old, "picking out tunes" on his upright piano during one of
their visits. He recognized her innate talent, and insisted on giving
her his piano so she could continue to play.

Robinson played at numerous recitals, weddings and receptions while
growing up. As a freshman at Winthrop College (it was not a University
then), she was chosen as accompanist for all choral performances. She
also played solo concerts, accompanied the many famous guest singers
who came to perform at the campus, and even played the morning and
evening Winthrop chimes. After graduating from Winthrop, she went to
Teachers College at Columbia University in New York, where she
completed her Master's Degree in only one year, studying with
well-known pianist and teacher Edwin Hughes. While studying in New
York, she taught herself to play the organ and served as organist for
the 4th Avenue Church in Brooklyn. In New York, she was a concert
pianist featured with renowned artists and orchestras, appearing at
Carnegie Hall, on tour and repeatedly on the radio broadcasts
"Keyboard Masters" and "Young Artists" over station WNYC.

As a homemaker with three children, Robinson began a teaching career
in the Lancaster area. At first she taught at the college level, and
then gave private piano and organ lessons to many students in her home
over the years. Robinson died at age 76 in 1999. Her influence and
love of music, however, continues to live on in her students, and now
in this concert series.

Dear Friends,

Hope this winter finds you well.

Here at long last are stories of my musical travels from last year.

** Carol Williams and Spreckels Organ

In June 08, I visited San Diego to see an old friend and also meet Dr.
Carol Williams and the Spreckels Organ! The last time I was in San
Diego must have been over 10 years ago, back when I was just starting
my organ studies. On the lovely June day, Carol kindly demonstrated
the organ, gave me a tour (helped by the curator Lyle Blackinton) of
the innards, and let me play. Afterwards Carol and I enjoyed a
fantastic lunch in a nearby cafe, right in beautiful Balboa Park. I
got to see the action, inside the air chamber that felt like a ride in
an airplane due to a difference in pressure, the drums and cymbals,
and much history of this fascinating outdoor organ. I also learned
that it has a sort of "garage door", corrugated metal, that descends
to protect the pipes and also to give an organist a private practice
space. And I now know that it takes the entire Fugue #1 from Die Kunst
der Fuge for the door to descend completely (see the photo of me in
the process, in the link below). Here are the photos and a short
video I took from inside the chamber while Carol played above.

** Summer at Eastman: Harpsichord Improvisation Course

Lately I have fallen in love with the harpsichord, and I inherited a
very basic Zuckermann "Z-box" from someone who built it from a kit
back in the '60s. I have been teaching myself on it, and got an
understanding of how to get a nice sound out of the instrument (thanks
to the organ background). So when the postcard from Eastman School of
Music arrived, I jumped on the opportunity to spend a whole week
living and breathing harpsichords! The course, led by William Porter,
was an amazing, eye opening and validating experience. Most students
in the 13-person class were actually organists, which made for lively
discussion and lunch clicques that formed quickly. It was a hot summer
and I lived in the Music School dorm (tiny room with no A/C),
furthering the notion that I was there to learn, learn and learn.
Eastman has a number of fantastic harpsichords, as well as several
pipe organs right in the building. I would highly recommend this
program.

Photos here:

seJuly2008

In other harpsichord news, I am currently learning early pieces of
J.S. Bach (including the Capriccio on the Departure of Beloved Brother
and Lute pieces) and preparing a concert program of Purcell and
Monteverdi on the harpsichord with my good friend and organist Liya
Petrides (DMA in organ, Juilliard), who has a beautiful singing voice.
I am also going to upgrade the Z-box strings and jacks with new ones
that should improve its sound and responsiveness by a great deal.

** Member News:

Jared Lamenzo will play a recital on the historic Erben organ at Old
St. Patrick's Church, NYC, on Sunday February 8, at 4 pm. The recital
will celebrate recent work done on the instrument by the esteemed
Sebastian Gluck Orgelbau. I will be the registrant for this event.

King of Instruments" by Jenny Setchell of http://www.nzorgan.com .
Wow. This was as enjoyable as having a nice dinner with seasoned

libations. I am ready for volume two! Kudos to Jenny and to all who
shared the hilarious stories.

In the distant past, while visiting a music library,
I came across a piece of organ music (in some collection,
or as part of a suite) that consisted
almost entirely of perfect-fifth-type chords
in both hands. I believe that the right hand
chords were descending, and left hand chords
were ascending. NOT sure what the pedals were doing.
I didn't zerox the music, and I can now kick myself
for not doing that. Does anyone in this group know
of ANY music similar to this, (OTHER than the organ
part in Vaughan-Williams 7th Symphony)??

Dear organfocus - - -

I will soon have an interview and audition
for a full-time job at a church with a
late 60's HOLTKAMP organ that consists of
around 26 or so ranks, on 2 manuals and pedals.

I will have VERY little practice time on
the instrument, so I need suggestions from
a Holtkamp player (using a similar sized
instrument) for VERY impressive sounding,
but easy to learn, not TOO much pedal usage
Prelude(s), Offertories, and Postlude(s),
each of duration around 4 to 7 minutes.

Thank you.

Well Dave,

I don't know about Holtkamp specifically, but one of my all-time
favorites is the Meine Seele erhebt den Herren (Fuga supra il
Magnificat), by JS Bach, BWV 733 (Krebs??). It is 5 pages long in my
edition, and the pedal cantus firmus in whole notes comes in only at
page 4. But what a dramatic entrance it is!

Dear Friends,

Bob Thompson forwarded this to our list-- it's the first message to arrive
with an attachment link, as I had disabled attachments in the past. Enjoy!

Dear organ enthusiasts,

In the process of learning Petr Eben's gigantic "The Labyrinth of the World
and the Paradise of the Heart", I am looking for the tune name and text of
the attached chorale which he uses in one of the movements.

I would dearly appreciate it if any fellow organaut can come up with the
answer to this puzzle.

Here it is in pdf. I suspect that it comes from a Bohemian Brethren and/or
Moravian source.
Does anyone have such hymnals at hand or have an idea where I could see a
thematic catalogue of same?

Thanks so much.
