Dear Friends,
I hope those of you enduring hot weather are keeping cool.

** Lana Krakovskiy in Free lunchtime concert at St. Ann and the Holy
Trinity, Brooklyn
Wednesday, July 14 at 1:10 I will play the restored 1925 Skinner
organ. Music of Byrd, Bach and Krebs. It's going to be very exciting
to play some non-traditional registrations on that marvelous
instrument.

** An unfortunate fate met Brooklyn Baptist Temple during the NY heat
wave. Fire swept through the sanctuary causing serious damage to the
esteemed Steere organ. Additionally fire destroyed the records of the
Brooklyn AGO chapter. I find it especially poignant as I was just
there several weeks ago attending a silent movie screening. That was
probably the last time the organ was heard publicly before the fire.

** I played the lunchtime recital at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity
Church last Wednesday. The program was a shortened version of my
recent solo recital: Byrd, Pavana and Galliarda; Bach - "O Gott, du
frommer Gott"; Bach- "Meine Seele erhebt den Herren" from the
Schueblers, and Krebs, Fuga sopra "Meine Seele erhebt den Herren".
Since I could not really use those famous shimmering flutes and
strings in my program, I did a little meditative improvisation on them
before the concert, which was lots of fun. Even though I love playing
Baroque and early music, when I improvise freely I tend to sound
somewhat 20th-century French.

It was interesting to play the Byrd on the Skinner--the action is very
sensitive, almost like a tracker. I used the reeds, including the
16's, liberally in the brass band-like sections. The priest in charge,
Rev. Askew, came up to the organ loft after the concert to mention how
much she enjoyed the Byrd, being British, and she appreciated the
registration and even the historic fingering - which apparently was
discernible from down below. I particularly enjoyed playing the Krebs
there too, using the rich resources of the organ to keep building
through to the thundering finale. Quite exhilarating. Special thanks to Jared
Lamenzo for
helping out with page turning and registration ideas.

Dear Organfocus,

Back in the late 1970's, the late Leonard Raver presented a workshop of organ
music written in the late 1970's. I attended that workshop but I unfortunately
lost the list of music that he presented. There was much good modern music on
that list, but especially noteworthy was a minimalist composition that began
with a left hand ostinato of two alternating NOTES (I believe it was F, A-flat,
F, A-flat, etc., or the like. After the ostinato proceeded for quite a few
measures, a rather lyrical and singing although definitely instrumental (flute
or violin type melody) occurred in the right hand. This "process" then
proceeded in an energetic manner for quite a few measures, constantly build in
volume and excitement. Then, a pedal ostinato using the same two manual notes
appeared, lasting for quite a few more measures constantly building in volume
and excitement to the very end, which ended very abruptly. Even with the abrupt
end, the piece "kept going" in one's psyche and entire being. Does this piece
sound familiar to anyone in this forum??

Thanks,
Dave

My name is David Kern, and I am happy to announce that I have just
assumed the
position of Administrator for MIKUNE MUSIC.

For over ten years Vic Searle has spent thousands of hours
transcribing and arranging
music for the organ. He has over 350 works, including music for use
in worship, arrangements of symphonic music, piano pieces, Sousa
marches and even some ragtime music.

Unfortunately, he has been forced to end his career and is now in the
TCU of the hospital where he has lived for the past five years.

I first met Vic in 1960, fifty years ago when I was in Jr. Hi. Since
I have just retired, this has given me the opportunity to undertake
the responsibility of carrying on the fine work he he has accomplished.

I have made a website which carries all the pieces he has done, with
photos , descriptions of the music plus a review page.

The website may be accessed at mikunemusic.com

I will be available on the website to answer any questions you may
have. Please feel free to contact me for any information.

I sincerely hope that you will join the hundreds of organists who have
used this service in the past.

Sincerely,

David M. Kern

Dear Friends,

As of 1:30P.M. this afternoon I have become generally available for music
ministry within the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. The economic downturn
forced the current pastor of St. John Vianney to let me go. I still have one
paycheck coming. If things get better financially he may invite me back, but in
the meantime I can play funerals during the week, weddings, Saturday and Sunday
service. I work from 4P.M. to 12:30A.M. at the IRS. I usually schedule my annual
leave to coincide with Catholic holydays and observances so I plan ahead for
Christmas, Ash Wednesday, and Holy Week. I would not be available for mid week
services in the evening because of my main job. I picked the location of my
apartment because it is close to 285 and in a very central location. I'm 30
miles from Conyers, 30 from Lithia Springs, and if the price is right I am
willing to travel to Cumming or Tyrone. (Macon needs a motel room as part of the
deal (g). With sufficient notice I can ask for annual leave for anything else

You might be interested to know that there are many Organs in Italy that sit
unplayed, unloved and almost unknown in many of the churches there.  Some of
these date back to 1400s and many of these require a bellows pumper in order
that they can be played if playable. Neglect often does great damage to an organ
simply because mice and other such things get into an organ and cause it to
become unplayable in these Churches--even though no one personally did anything
to hurt the organ.

We spent a lot of time in Mexico.

I think there are a lot of old colonial churches
in mexico with antique organs.... in fact
we saw one I think near San Miguel....
looked neglected.

By the way Santa Prisca in Tasco MX
has a fantastically beautiful sounding
16th century Spanish colonial organ[large].
the trompet stops high in the church
are absolutely etherial. people were
looking up in awe. They were holding
a music/organ festival there with a lot of
talent from Mex DF.

By the way my wife and I are not organists..
just affectionados.

Ciao!

Butz (of Germany) has reissued the stupendous Fantasy on "Adeste Fideles" by
Jules Grison. While it is a veritable back-, knuckle-, and ankle-buster, it is
nonetheless perhaps the most THRILLING piece of organ music in existence, Giles
Swayne's "Riff-Raff" notwithstanding (if anything, it's even TOUGHER!!!). What
it must have sounded like in the gigantic Rheims Cathedral where Grison was

Also I'd like to tell you about my Christmas Organ Folio which was published

Butz (Sankt Augustin, Germany) prints it, and it can be purchased through the
OHS online catalog (it's around eleven dollars, if I recall correctly). Butz is
reprinting a raft of organ music - - - if it was originally published in Europe,
there's a good chance they will have it.

Dear Friends,

I hope 2011 brings you only joy, happiness and great music!

I have just returned from playing a concert of harpsichord repertoire from
16-18th centuries on a piano at an art cafe. It was an unusual and positive
experience.

Here is my program:

*William Byrd* (c. 1540—1623): Carmans Whistle

*Peter Philips* (c. 1560—1628): Amarilli di Julio Romano

*William Byrd: *Pavana and Galiarda

*Johann Jakob Froberger* (1616—1667): Toccata VI da sonarsi alla Levatione

*Alessandro Poglietti* (early 17th century—1683): Toccata del 7 tuono

*Alessandro Poglietti*: Suite in A Minor

*Allemande La Bravade*

*Courante*

*Sarabande*

*Binder Gigue*

*
**Alessandro Poglietti:* Canzon teutsch trommel & Canzon francoix trommel

*(Song of the German Drum & Song of the French Drum)*

*Jean-Philippe Rameau* (1683—1764): selections from Suite in G minor

*Les Tricotets (The Knitting Needles)*

*L'Indifférente (The Indifferent One)*

*Menuet 1*

*Menuet 2*

*L'Enharmonique***

*Johann Sebastian Bach *(1685—1750): Thema all' Imitatio Gallina Cuccu

*(Theme in imitation of a hen and a cuckoo)*

*Johann Sebastian Bach*: Fantasia in A minor BWV 922

Now I know a thing or two about bringing old music into unexpected venues.
It was met enthusiastically by the friendly crowd that braved the aftermath
of the New York blizzard.

Here is a Facebook photo album of the performance:

The Fairfield County Chorale

Dear FCC family, friends, and supporters:

December started out joyfully with two highly successful concerts, first in
Ridgefield with the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra (Click here for reviews) and
next at Norwalk Concert Hall, with our most successful ever Handel's Messiah.
We even prepared a special holiday greeting for you, to thank you for your
support during 2010, which you can hear by clicking here.

On December 27, our wonderful conductor of 35 years, Johannes Somary, suffered a
stroke and continues in critical condition at Montefiore Hospital.  All our
prayers go with him, Anne, and their entire family.  They ask that no emails,
calls or flowers be sent at this time; however, you can go to Caring Bridge and
follow Johannes' progress leave messages for the family at:
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/johannessomary
Our season will continue, as Johannes would want, with rehearsals beginning
January 10 for Durufle's Requiem, Chilcott's Canticles of Light with the
Fairfield County Children's Choir, and with the Connecticut premiere of member
