** Congratulations! **
Congratulations to subscriber B. Hennen of Newark Ohio! He won a copy of
"Thank Heavens For Dale Evans" on cassette, courtesy of the All-Inclusive
Dixie Chicks Page and CDnow. That's the good news... for the bad news,
keep reading...
** Making of "Little Ol' Cowgirl" **
A special sneak peek for list members! I haven't had time to pretty it up
or add my comments in the margins, but a contributor in Ohio recently sent
me an article from the March 1992 issue of Dallas Life Magazine detailing
the making of "Little Ol' Cowgirl"! It's a great look into the Dixie
Chicks' transition album -- the one that was supposed to be their
springboard to success. Instead, it was the end of the line for Robin Lynn
Macy, and the strain that led to her departure is evident in this amazing
article.
I haven't even had time to find out if the contributor wants me to reveal
his name! But I am so very grateful for this look into my favorite Dixie
Chicks release. Check it out before I even get it added to my links, an
exclusive just for you!

** Pre-Sony Dixie Chicks CD Update **
According to TV Guide (2/20/1999), the Dixie Chicks sold 90,000 copies of
their independent releases -- and no more will be printed, as Dallas'
Crystal Clear Sound no longer has the rights to the discs. They had 5-year
options on each one, and as expected, the supply of the first CD, "Thank
Heavens For Dale Evans," appears to have dwindled to zero. "Little Ol'
Cowgirl" may follow soon, and I wouldn't wait too long before picking up
that copy of "Shouldn't A Told You That"!
We knew about the Chicks here in North Texas long before the rest of the
world, and you'd figure a Dallas joint might be your best bet for their
indie releases. CDBargains, a Dallas CD Warehouse franchisee, is the only
place I've ever found used copies of the old discs -- I bought my set used.
They also have some contacts at the label and have been able to get dibs
on what may be the last dozen or so *new* copies of "Little Ol' Cowgirl"
and "Shouldn't A Told You That." The last copy of "Dale Evans" went out
the door more than a month ago... but you never know when a used copy might
come walking in. Check 'em out, and make sure to tell 'em that you found
out about CDBargains at dixiechicks.com!

A couple of other sites might be able to help in your Dixie Chicks search.
Miles Of Music in California is an alt.country specialist -- and the only
place I've found that has discs by The Groobees, a Lubbock-based band that
wrote and recorded "Wide Open Spaces" before it became a #1 Dixie Chicks
smash.

Village Records in Shawnee Mission, Kansas were the ones who supplied
TwangCast (http://www.twangcast.com/) with their copies of the Old Chicks
discs. They mentioned that they might be able to find some "Dale Evans,"
so you might send them a note -- after all, Dixie Chicks founder Robin Lynn
Macy now lives in Kansas...

Now for the bad news, especially for contest winner B. Hennen. CDnow, the
#1 stop for anything still in print, still lists cassettes of "Thank
Heavens For Dale Evans" and "Shouldn't A Told You That"... but they've gone
from Low Stock to Backordered. I'm afraid that when they call Crystal
Clear, they'll find that the well has gone quite dry. But maybe there are
some cassettes in a corner... I'll keep you posted! Meanwhile, CDnow will
*not* bill your credit card (you can also send a check!) until a
backordered item actually shows up, so why not place that order now and be
first in line (right behind Mr. Hennen) if the tapes show up!

** Take this job and... **
That's all... I've got to cut it short (someone's saying, "you call that
short?") because we're under a big deadline push here at my work. I'm
happy to report that there are now over 200 subscribers to this update!
When work slows down, look for some simply amazing pictures and stories
from a source *very* close to the history of the Dixie Chicks. When I say
*very* close, I mean *very, very* close... stay tuned!
