Wednesday night was full of anticipation. But as the Shania Twain special
drew to a close, it was obvious that Channel 11's plans had been changed by
forces beyond their control, and the Laura Lynch interview that had been
scheduled for sometime in the 8pm hour had been moved to the 10pm news.
According to Tom Grego in KTVT's news department, CBS sent a "flash"
message shortly after 7pm. The network had already replaced "Chicago Hope"
with a music-themed "Touched By An Angel", and now they had decided to put
a "Classic" episode of "60 Minutes" up against the 8pm start of the Monica
interview. There are other places on the 'net where you can learn about
the complex relationship between an affiliate and the network... but while
local stations can and do preempt network shows for local content, this was
not the time.
Instead, KTVT ran several "teasers" about the feature, and ran it on the
10pm local news. Patient fans were not disappointed.
Reporter Stephanie Lucero's interview with Laura Lynch Tull was wonderful.
If you've ever used a stopwatch, you'll notice that a news or feature story
rarely runs more than a minute... two minutes tops. Channel 11 devoted a
full *three minutes* to Laura's facinating story!
I had the honor of talking to Ms. Lucero this afternoon, and found out some
more good news. The weekend news producer was also impressed by the
report, and will be airing it again on Saturday (March 6), on the 6pm
Channel 11 local news. Dallas Dixie Chicks fans who didn't catch the
report on Wednesday have another chance! Remember, though, Dallas/Fort
Worth is a big place -- a breaking news story would likely force the
station to change their plans.
Meanwhile, there is even hope for Dixie Chicks fans outside the Metroplex.
Ms. Lucero noted that this story is available for the asking to any other
CBS affilliate, as well as to other stations that are members of the CONUS
news service. While there is no way to know if the story will run in any
particular city, you can call your local CBS station and ask them if they
could run the feature. Just tell them that it originally ran on Wednesday,
March 3, on Dallas/Ft. Worth CBS affiliate KTVT, Channel 11. You can find
more information about the station on their web site:

When you visit the site, don't forget to send them an email note, and tell
them how much you liked their interview with Laura Lynch Tull, the "other"
Dixie Chick!
