** Sound Files Return! **
Long-time subscribers may remember my rather brash announcement, back in
May, that the sound samples would return to the All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks
Page in September... specifically, the day after Labor Day. Well, I'm
happy to announce that the samples -- at least, some of them -- are back!
They're only available on the Beta site for now, though, and I've only put
together a few.
I've also taken steps to prevent any legal misunderstandings about the
samples:
1. Short Samples: My samples will only be 30 seconds or so in length.
Full-length versions will not be provided -- either on the site or by any
other means.
2. Lower Quality Samples: While it is possible to create near-CD-quality
samples using the .mp3 format, I have purposely chosen to use a lower
bitrate setting. This will allow the listener to appreciate the Dixie
Chicks' musical history without compromising the desire to search out and
find the real thing.
3. A Short Intro: Each sound sample will be prefaced by the drumroll.wav
sound that comes with Microsoft Office 97. It's short, but it should
suffice to keep the samples from being peformed in public. If Bill Gates
would like to send me a Cease and Desist letter over drumroll.wav, I'll add
it to my collection.
So far, I've compiled four all-new sound samples. Two samples are from
"Shouldn't A Told You That" -- an album with some similarities to the Dixie
Chicks' new release, "Fly". And the other two are from Charlie Robison's
"Life Of The Party" release -- these are included on my "Who did we let
Emily marry?" page.
The return of the samples is more of an "in like a lamb, out like a lion"
situation. If all goes well, I'll be able to supply y'all and other Dixie
Chicks fans with valuable information on where the music comes from. On
the other hand, if the samples lead to another Cease And Desist letter,
then I'll simply comply... as loudly as possible. The Chicks took a pretty
good wringing at the hands of the Dallas Observer over that last little
letter... I'm betting that if I stick to the right side of the copyright
fence, the powers that be will leave me alone.
So check it out... and if you encounter any technical glitches, please let
me know! I'll move these changes out to the main site after I've created a
few more sound files.
