** Discography Updates: Blasts from the Past **
Natalie Maines' fans may recognize Pat Green's name -- her ex-husband
Micheal Tarabay used to play bass for Green before following Natalie to
Nashville. It was no surprise, then, when it was reported on Nici's Dixie
Chicks discussion list that Natalie had sung on a Pat Green release
sometime around the time she and Tarabay were married. After some research
(and after asking the folks on the Pat Green list), I found out that she
sings on two tracks on "George's Bar", released in early 1997. One of the
tracks is a duet of Natalie and Pat Green, and it has some of the same
intensity as her later unreleased duet with Deryl Dodd.
For details on "George's Bar" (and CDnow sound sample links), this URL will
take you directly to the Complete Discography entry:

No surprises there. But it turned out that Natalie had sung backgrounds on
another Pat Green release... his first release, "Dancehall Dreamer". It
was issued in Fall 1995 -- a pivotal period in Dixie Chicks history. In
October 1995, Natalie joined the group in the place of founding lead singer
Laura Lynch.
I think this release may answer one of the nagging little questions in
Dixie Chicks history: how was an unknown singer from the Panhandle able to
cut a demo tape so good that it changed the makeup of a group that had just
signed a major-label deal?
Pretty simply, as it turns out. At some point in mid-1995, Natalie was
already in the studio -- Crystal Clear Sound, the Chicks' label. The
producer was none other than Lloyd Maines, Natalie's dad -- the top
producer in the entire state of Texas. If he just happened to have a song
in his pocket written by the Erwin sisters, then all the pieces fall into
place.

** The Groobees **
No other artist had quite the impact on the Dixie Chicks' road to fame as
did The Groobees and their lead singer, Susan Gibson. Gibson wrote "Wide
Open Spaces" about her own experiences leaving home, but the song was so
personal and touching that Sony originally balked at even including the
song on the Dixie Chicks major-label debut. The Chicks pushed for it -- a
habit that continues today with controversial tracks like "Sin Wagon" and,
of course, "Goodbye Earl". The song topped the Country charts for 4 weeks,
cementing the Dixie Chicks' status as Country stars and paving the way for
the independence they showed on "Fly".
In recognition of The Groobees' contribution to the Dixie Chicks'
direction, I've included all three of their releases in the Discography.
The group's first two releases are hard to find, so I may update these
sections as I get more information:

Their newest release, on the Blix Street label, is climbing the Americana
charts and is available through the CDnow links on the page:

** Back to the Future **
The most exciting addition to the Discography is a release that hasn't even
come out yet. Robin Lynn Macy is back!
While Laura Lynch left the Dixie Chicks to live the cowgirl life, Robin
never stopped playing the music she loved. After leaving in 1992 to focus
on a more traditional sound, she cut two albums with the Domestic Science
Club (Robin, Sara Hickman, and Patty Lege). She worked on Dallas' public
radio station KERA before they discontinued their music programming, and
finally ended up in the Wichita, Kansas area -- one of the country's
hottest traditional music regions.
She married musician Mark Bennett, and they and some friends formed "Blue
Plate Special", touring the southern Kansas coffeehouse circuit. But at
some point after the 1999 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, the dynamic
music scene brought changes that appear to have kindled Robin's memories of
touring -- and recording.
She's now one of the lead singers for "Big Twang", a group much like
"Danger in the Air" -- four guys and a lady. And this group has goals
beyond Kansas. According to information from the Winfield-L mailing list,
Big Twang has plans to issue an album of traditional music in summer 2000!
Even better, the group has taken to the Internet, putting three full-length
songs up for public download at mp3.com.

** Still more changes! **
Look for even more changes to the Complete Discography, including:
* Changes previously in Beta: Updates to "Fly", "Soundtrack for a
Century", and "Sheryl Crow - Live from Central Park".
* Emily and Martie singing backup on Keith Urban's first US solo release.
* Two spoken-word releases, with reviews by Dixie Chicks Discussion list
member Michael Curtis.
* A bluegrass instrumental tribute that credits dixie-chicks.com in the
liner notes!
* Find out why Bug Music is a safe home for the Chicks' original songs.
* Got Karaoke?
** Coming soon **
While cleaning my desk, I found something you'll like: the Spring/Summer
1993 Chick Chat! It includes the Chicks' invitation to the Predidential
Inauguration, the obituary for the old blue van, and an introduction to the
famous Pink RV. It really did have "pink carpet, pink chairs, pink sofa,
[and] pink formica accoutrements"!
I'll transcribe it when I get a chance... meanwhile, thanks (and
apologies!) to Suzanne, who gave me her extra copy when we were scanning
her wonderful Scrapbook. If you haven't visited the Suzanne's Scrapbook
section of the site, you're missing the most complete pictorial history of
the Dixie Chicks on the 'net:

** Yaaaa-hoo! **
Thank you for supporting the All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! Thanks to
your support and input, "All-Inclusive" just recieved one of the 'net's
highest honors: a Yahoo! "Cool Site" designation. You can't just write
Yahoo! and ask for this -- you just go check out the competition and poof,
there it is. But I would have never gotten those cute little sunglasses
without your help.
Happy Easter! Good luck, and God bless.
