Robin Macy gives an interview ahead of her Dallas homecoming, and Sara
Hickman (Domestic Science Club) just happens to be in town as well!
** The Dixie Chicks inspire the nation **
As expected, the Dixie Chicks' appearance on the nationally televised
special "America: A Tribute To Heroes" was low-key, but the song they sang
was stunning. "I Believe In Love" showed off the best of the Chicks'
unique vocal and instrumental style, in much the same way as "Wide Open
Spaces" and "Cowboy Take Me Away". It's a love song, with lyrics like this:
Oh I'd rather be alone
Like I am tonight
Than settle for a kind of love
That fades before the morning light
It was written by Natalie Maines/Tarabay/Pasdar and Martie
Erwin/Seidel/Maquire (yes, Martie really did get married), along with
rockabilly-bluegrass singer-songwriter Marty Stuart (Hillbilly Rock). Look
for bootleg recordings of the song to appear across the 'net soon -- since
the follow-up to "Fly" is likely to be a long time coming.
The show itself was very low key, with no introductions for the artists, no
text telling who the announcers were. All egos were checked at the
door. So perhaps we shouldn't make a big deal of it... but the Chicks'
slot in the program came right at the top of the second hour of the show,
right when viewers tuned in to other shows (if there had been any on
anywhere) might be channel-surfing.
One mystery, though: who was the standup bass player hiding behind
Martie? If you'll recall, the Chicks started out with Laura Lynch on
standup bass... surely it wasn't her, was it?!

** Chicks sing National Anthem, and redesign web site **
Just yesterday (9/26/01), the Dixie Chicks completely threw out most of the
"fluffy" content at www.dixiechicks.com and replaced it with a simple
opening page with a simple yet powerful statement:
"Stand Together In Our Time of Need. Download the Star Spangled Banner as
performed by the Dixie Chicks, and support our nation's heroes and victims
by donating to the Red Cross."
The download -- a 1 meg executable file -- is amazing. It's a slide show
of patriotic images accompanying one of the best renditions of America's
National Anthem you'll ever hear. Two of the biggest moments in the Dixie
Chicks' early history were their appearances before the Dallas Cowboys and
Texas Rangers games... now, everyone can relive those early days (though
with Natalie instead of Laura).
Just make sure you're ready to stand up and salute!

** Robin Macy returns to Dallas, gives interview **
Robin Lynn Macy, the Chicks' original lead singer and guitar player, gave
Buddy Magazine's Tom Geddie an exclusive look into her post-Chicks life in
Kansas' bluegrass community. "It's like 1958 here," she says, describing
her life in Belle Plaine, as a teacher at Wichita Collegiate School, and
bluegrass player in her new group, Big Twang. On her departure from the
Chicks, Geddie reports that Robin "wishes people wouldn't make such a big
deal out of the split."
It's a great article, and too long to include in this newsletter! So I've
created a page for it on the All-Inclusive site -- check it out.

** Robin Macy and Sara Hickman both in Dallas **
As Robin Macy and Big Twang prepare for Saturday's (9/29) show at Poor
David's Pub, fellow folk music singer/songwriter Sara Hickman is making a
swing through town! Robin, Sara, and Patty Lege combined in 1996 to form
the Domestic Science Club, cutting two great discs (one "Chicks-bluegrass",
the other "Sara-folk") before disbanding.
On Friday (9/28), Sara will be at the Half Price Books main location at US
75 and Northwest Highway in Dallas. She'll be talking and singing as part
of public radio station KERA's noontime talk show, and the appearance is
free of charge. Meanwhile, Robin and Big Twang are playing a gig in Kansas
that day, so no chance of them getting together then...
Saturday (9/29) finds Sara playing at the Jubilee Coffee House (First
Methodist Church, Hurst, 817-424-2724). According to the Jubilee's
recording, the show starts at 7:30, and I would expect it to last maybe
three hours? So here's Sara in the Dallas area, 11pm and nothing to do...
Also on Saturday, Big Twang plays Poor David's Pub -- one of the first
venues to give the then-unknown Dixie Chicks a place to roost. Colin Boyd
opens at 9pm, so Robin and the rest will probably be on stage until well
after midnight -- especially if the place is packed with appreciative
fans! Robin made quite an impression on Dallas, as a musician (don't
forget Danger In The Air, along with Domestic Science Club and the Dixie
Chicks), an on-air personality with KERA, *and* as a teacher at St. Mark's
School for Boys. Don't wait until 9pm to arrive at Poor David's on Saturday.
But if someone could give her a ride, wouldn't it be wonderful if Sara
Hickman would brave the cross-town commute from Hurst to Lower Greenville
to stop in and say "hi" to an old friend? Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear
Sara and Robin sing "Kayaking" (from the first Domestic Science Club CD)?
We can dream... we can hope... but most of all, we'd better make sure and GO!
