News Flash: D.Observer likes "Home"!   Message List

The Dallas Observer, which lambasted the Dixie Chicks for "selling out" to
the Nashville machine, is head-over-heels in love with "Home". Zac Crain,
who interviewed me when Sony's lawyers hassled my site (see
http://www.dixie-chicks.com/cease.html) has an article in the 7/25/2002
issue of the weekly Dallas Observer in which he says the new album "splits
the difference between the first incarnation of the group and the second,
Maines' newly amazing voice bridging the gap."

Also interesting is how Crain got his advance copy. He's not telling -- he
notes that "Sony seems fairly protective of the disc [...] and, breaking
from our usual strategy, we don't wanna get anyone in trouble." There are
a lot of folks in this town with contacts in the Chicks camp, any one (or
more!) of whom could have smuggled out this highly prized contraband. All
I know is, it wasn't me...

"Home" Coming
The Dixie Chicks' new album won't be out for another month, but we'll tell
you why it's worth waiting for

The discussion list (see dixiechicksfans.com) has been wondering for months
about the track list... here are the tracks that Crain noted in his article:

* "Truth #2" and "Top of the World"
These are both from an unreleased Patty Griffin album.
See her discography here:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?I1443548

* "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)"
By Radney Foster, available on his "See What You Want To See" release.
It's not listed on CDnow, but check out his other work:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?K3542548

* "Landslide"
By Stevie Nicks -- the song the Chicks played on VH1's "Divas Las Vegas"
It's on Fleetwood Mac's 1975 self-titled release:

* "White Trash Wedding"
Crain calls this the best song on "Home", or at least the most fun. He
says that it was recorded by Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, and Gillian
Welch for the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou", but I can't seem to find
it on the soundtrack:

Not mentioned in the Dallas Observer article, but almost certain to be
included, are:

* "I Believe In Love"
From the Tribute To Heroes benefit:

* "Travelin' Soldier"
Co-written and originally recorded by Bruce Robison, Emily's
brother-in-law. It's available on both 1999's "Long Way Home From
Anywhere" and on his 1996 self-titled indie release.
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Y2343648

* "Long Time Gone"
The first official single release from "Home" is #5 with a bullet on the
Billboard Hot Country Singles chart (dated 8/3/02) after just 9 weeks on
the chart. It was originally recorded in a living-room session by Tim
O'Brien and Darrell Scott and released on Howdy Skies Records -- it's not
available on CDnow, but you can buy it directly from Tim O'Brien's web site:
http://www.timobrien.net/discdetail.cfm?rid=10

You'll also recognize at least two songs on Darrell Scott's "Aloha from
Nashville" -- "It's A Great Day To Be Alive" re-done by Tim McGraw, and
"Heartbreak Town", from the Chicks' own "Fly". That album, you *can* get
from CDnow:

The album itself is due August 27, and you can pre-order it from
CDnow. Choose overnight delivery, and you'll get the disc almost before
Wal-Mart does!

And a final note: if you've been to www.dixie-chicks.com lately, you've
probably noticed that I haven't updated it in quite a while. I'm the Green
Party candidate for Texas Senate, and that simply hasn't left time for
outside projects. For more information about my campaign, please visit
