Last week, I was attending my grandmother's funeral in Kentucky. I
was out of town and away from news and the Internet. When I
returned, my inbox was full of messages like this one:

> I have seem my last concert, bought my last CD. That's my
> commander in chief. You have lost your fans in the Army.
> LTC [name removed] US Army

I've only just returned to work, and I can't spend much time
researching the extent of Natalie's remarks. I can point out two
very important points to the new members of the OriginalChicks email
list:

* I am not a Dixie Chick, and I have no way to contact them! Please
visit the site again, if you're not sure -- my site is about their
history before they got big, before Natalie Maines even joined.

* You do not need to tell me that you are unsubscribing, because you
can do it yourself. Messages asking me to do it for you will be
deleted without reply. To unsubscribe, simply send an email (blank
is fine) to the following address:

originalchicks-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

That's originalchicks-unsubscribe [at] yahoogroups.com

I do have strong opinions on this subject. I don't want to get into
it in detail in this forum, because my boss will not be happy if I
spend the next week replying to the considered opinions of 500+ list
subscribers. But as you love America, and what she stands for, I
would ask that you please remember the values that our country is
founded on.

What makes America great? Is it unwavering devotion to our leaders?
No -- that's what we see in Iraq, and North Korea, where the
dictator's picture is plastered all over the country and dissent is
forbidden. Our president deserves our respect, but not our worship.

What makes America great? Is it "my country, right or wrong"? No --
that's an abandonment of our responsibility as Americans. It is our
duty as members of a democratic society to speak out when our country
goes down the wrong path.

What makes America great? Is it sitting idly by, hoping that someone
in the military or intelligence services knows something we don't?
No -- secrecy has its place, but general statements of Fear,
Uncertainty, and Doubt are not an appropriate reason to sacrifice the
lives of our troops on foreign sands.

Whether you are for or against the war, whether you agree with
Natalie's typically blunt statements or not... please do not lose
sight of the fact that we are all Americans in a free society -- a
system that our troops are willing to fight and die to protect.

God bless our troops, and may God grant our leaders the courage to
make the right choices -- whatever they may be.

By the way, before you burn your Dixie Chicks CDs, one more question:
Did you vote in your last local election?
