It doesn't seem like it, but it's been over a year since I last
reported in with Dixie Chicks news! The big event that prompted this
message, though, doesn't have anything to do with the current version
of the group.

** Original Chicks on the radio! **

There are fewer than 100,000 copies of the Dixie Chicks' three
independent releases. But one of those early releases has found its
way to Dallas radio station KRLD, News Radio 1080 AM. KRLD is the
flagship station of baseball's Texas Rangers, and it's a long-standing
tradition to play a bit of country instrumental during the Seventh
Inning Stretch. At the ballpark, it's always the Cotton Eyed Joe, but
the station only has time for a short snippet of something catchy.

Tonight (9/7/04), with the Rangers up 10-3 against the White Sox, that
catchy instrumental was the title cut of "Thank Heavens for Dale
Evans"!

As the commercial break ended, the instrumental bridge from the song
started up -- it would be just after "Dale Evans made a cowgirl out of
me." The announcer came on with the summary as the music continued to
play behind him, all the way to the end of the bridge. I could just
about hear the vocals start up as the music faded away to the noise of
the crowd at Ameriquest Field in Arlington. What a wonderful radio
moment! It was as big a surprise as the day in 1992 when Young
Country (now defunct) played "She'll Find Better Things To Do" during
the PM drive.

Kudos to KRLD and the Texas Rangers for their excellent musical taste!

** Minor site updates **

I've been working on some small-scale updates to the site. Look for
enhanced artist links, with more availablity information. I'm hoping
to link the Discography entries to as many of the following as would
make sense:

* CD Baby -- they only carry independent releases from groups like the
early '90s Dixie Chicks.

* Texas Music Express -- a great source for artists like Charlie
Robison and Pat Green, who are dragging country music back to its
roots whether it likes it or not.

* iTunes -- a huge catalog of both indie and mainstream music.

* eBay -- For a bargain, or for when all else fails.

I'm working on a new site to help you find items of interest, using a
web address that I rescued from the porn portals! Visit http://www.
chicksfromdixie.com/ to start your musical journey.

** But where are the New Chicks? **

According to Nici's regular updates, the current group members have
been busy having babies, though they've found time to record the
Kermit the Frog hit, "Rainbow Connection", for a childrens
compilation. They'll be hitting the road as part of the "Vote for
Change" concert tour, playing six dates in October in the runup to the
November elections. In case you've been living under a rock, I'll
just point out that the "Change" in question is not a reference to
their babies' diapers. Visit Nici's site for more details.
