You'd think that, with the Dixie Chicks' new album due out next Tuesday,
May 23, that you might have received a message or two with some sort of
breaking news. Or you might have even hoped that dixie-chicks.com would
get a long-needed facelift. Well, there's not much of an excuse for the
lack of site updates, but I do have a reason for not sending hot news via
this email list: I've been posting it all at Nici's dixiechicksfans.net
forum!
But this news is different, because it's completely about the original,
pre-Sony, pre-Natalie version of the Dixie Chicks that we in Dallas fell
for in the early '90s. Here's the note I just posted on Nici's board:
*** Three full-length Old Chicks cuts available! ***
** The Dallas Observer strikes again **
Some of y'all might recall that my site got its first brush with fame when
the Dixie Chicks' lawyers sent me a "Cease and Desist". I had ripped some
.mp3 samples of the group's three pre-Natalie albums and made them
available to download. I figured I was playing fair, because the albums
weren't available anymore, plus I kept the samples short (except for one
full song) *and* purposely ripped to a low quality bitrate.
The lawyers -- or more likely, the Chicks' Nashville image machine --
didn't like it. But when I called up the Dallas Observer, they had their
own bone to pick, and my story fit in perfectly with their view that the
Chicks were in the process of selling out for fortune and fame. They
interviewed me and made a feature article out of the situation -- pretty
much ensuring my site's success as a place to find out about the group's
history.
In previous messages I've posted about the Observer's about-face -- now
that the Chicks aren't ready to make nice, they're back on music editor
Robert Wilonsky's good side. He wrote in a blog entry that he really
preferred their new stuff, after all. But he's not finished yet! In a blog
entry from earlier this week, he takes another look back at the
pre-Natalie history of the group. It's a nice read (and he links to my
site again, what a nice guy).
But what caught my eye -- and ear -- is a little blast from the past.
Wilonsky includes not one, but THREE full-length .mp3 files, one from each
album.
* The title track from "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans"
* "Pink Toenails", Laura's signature song from "Little Ol' Cowgirl"
* "Planet of Love", the closing track on "Shoudln't A Told You That",
complete with the bonus "Boo Hoo" at the end of the track.
Wilonsky knows that he's walking down memory lane with the Chicks'
lawyers, not just with their music... but he's never been one to shy away
from controversy. I pity the lawyer that gets assigned to write a C&D to
the DO. We'll see if history repeats itself. Meanwhile, get 'em while you
can!
