** An eBay item of special interest
from the All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page **

Rob Davis (owner of www.dixiechicksfaq.com) just sent this note to the
Dixie Chicks fan discussion list. Tommy Nash joined the Chicks in 1995
after guitar player Matthew Benjamin left the group, and stayed with the
Chicks after Laura was let go in October 1995.

Chick Chat, Fall 1995
http://www.dixie-chicks.com/cchat95b.html

But he and bassist Bobby Charles Jr. were let go themselves in July 1999,
after "Fly" had already been recorded. In concerts later that same month,
the words to "Give It Up Or Let Me Go" changed to "Play that guitar, *boy*!"

In this issue: The site gets updated (finally!), an update on the Groobees,
and Big Twang is confirmed at Winfield.

** A long-awaited site update -- of sorts **

Fortunately, most of the information on "All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks" is
static... information about the group's history before they hit the big
time in 1998. But the "Breaking News" section was becoming a joke... it
was announcing Natalie's pregnancy!

That's all changed now, thanks to Chicks web pioneer Nici Larson. She's
given me permission to reprint excerpts from her biweekly "Dixie Chicks
Newsletter" on the site! This report features a summary of the latest news
-- if you want to stay current with the Chicks, without reading a dozen
messages a day from their fans, Nici's report is just the thing.

I'm proud to feature the Dixie Chicks Newsletter on the site! Instructions

** Big Twang to play Winfield **

It's not new news, but Big Twang (featuring founding Dixie Chick, Robin
Macy) is confirmed for this year's Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield,
Kansas. As you may know, the Winfield festival showcased the Dixie Chicks
early in their careers, and even earlier... Martie and Emily performed at
Winfield as teenagers in a band called "Blue Night Express". One of their
bandmates, Troy Gilchrist, is now a member of Big Twang.

For details on Big Twangs' appearances at Winfield, see their Performers
page on the Walnut Valley Festival site:

The Winfield festival runs from September 13th through the 16th. And don't
forget -- Robin and Big Twang are debuting in Dallas shortly after
Winfield! September 29th at Poor David's Pub, don't miss it!

>Subject: Re: The Groobees

The Groobees played their final show in Oklahoma City on Saturday, 26
May. All but one member of the band knew that night that it was going to
be their last show. Three band members are married and one of them is a
newlywed. They were wanting some personal time off to spend with their
families and the entire band had been discussing it for about a month. The
Groobees were right in the middle of their busiest tour ever while
promoting their latest CD, "Buy One, Get Eleven Free", so it wasn't as
simple as just taking a break. After much talk, the bottom line was that
five people just couldn't agree on a way for the band to continue on while
two of them took time off, so they just said "screw it". I know that's not
a very interesting story. It's kinda like going out with a whimper instead
of a bang. But the truth is that there really was no major problem that
led to their demise. They simply peaked and lost momentum and interest to
the point that their family lives were more important than the band.

Susan is, of course, currently touring actively around Texas with
occasional stops in Colorado and Oklahoma. Her band includes Denton's
Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle, Michael O'Connor on guitar and Daniel Makins on
drums, both of San Marcos, and Doug Anthony of San Antonio on six string
bass. Susan is no one-trick pony. "Wide Open Spaces" may be what got her
noticed, but it is certainly not her best work. She is an awesome
songwriter with a powerful and unique voice that has to be heard to be
believed. Everyone should check her out.

Groobees keyboard player/singer/songwriter Scott Mellott has moved to
Austin to work in artist management with The Groobees' former manager (and
original base player) Michael Devers. Bassist Bobby Schaffer and drummer
Todd Hall are playing various gigs with local musicians. Lead Guitar player
Gary Wayne Thomason is relaxing with his wife and playing occasional gigs.

** Sony Music Sues the Dixie Chicks **

In a completely unforeseen development, Sony Music has filed suit against
the Dixie Chicks. Sony claims that the Chicks are trying to leave the
label under false pretenses, with four albums still remaining in their
six-album deal. Here's the Associated Press article, as reported by Yahoo!
News.

Sony Music Sues the Dixie Chicks
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010718/en/dixie_chicks_4.html

Wednesday July 18 6:45 AM ET

>NEW YORK (AP) - Sony Music Entertainment has escalated a royalties dispute
>with the Dixie Chicks by suing the popular country act for breach of contract.
>
>A complaint filed Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan accused the Dixie
>Chicks of trying to leave Sony on "sham" claims that they've been underpaid.
>
>Sony lawyers asked the court to enforce the current contract and bar Emily

>
>A call to attorneys for the Dixie Chicks was not immediately returned.
>
>Since signing with Sony in 1997, the group has recorded two albums - "Wide
>Open Spaces" and "Fly" - selling 15 million records worldwide, the
>complaint said. Sony claims the contract calls for up to four more albums.
>
>Despite being paid millions of dollars, the Dixie Chicks demanded the
>company renegotiate their contract for millions more, the suit said. Talks

** Big Twang concert rescheduled **

In other news: call this the "Call Before You Haul" department. Due to
circumstances beyond their control, Robin Macy's return to Dallas has been
delayed a few weeks. Big Twang is now scheduled to play at Dallas' famous
Poor David's Pub on Saturday, September 29, 2001.

It's been a long time since Robin left Dallas, and she's sure to receive a
warm welcome from fans of her work with the original Dixie Chicks, as well
as fans of Domestic Science Club. Don't forget, she was also a teacher at
St. Mark's School, and was a DJ on public radio station KERA as well. So
you'd better show up early to get a seat. Poor David's is a
listener-friendly venue -- all the seats are good, unless you show up too
late to get one!

Colin Boyd is confirmed to open for Big Twang, so the great music will
start early and may go on all night. If you only make one concert this
year, this is the one.

In addition to my dixie-chicks.com responsibilities, I'm the
webmaster for Dallas' Americana Country 95.3 The Range
(www.KHYI.com). One of my tasks is to update the concert calendar.
This week's calendar updates revealed something wonderful: Robin
Macy's return to Dallas!

According to the schedule posted at the Poor David's Pub web site
(www.poordavidspub.com), Big Twang will be arriving at the club that
virtually started it all in August. Dallas-area music fans consider
Poor David's something of a shrine -- owner David Card recently
celebrated the Lower Greenville area establishment's 24th
anniversary. In a town where the lifespan of a club is usually
measured in weeks (or days!), this is a startling feat! And it's all
because of Poor David's commitment to the music.

Back in the early days of the Dixie Chicks, Poor David's was one of
the few venues willing to work with an up-and-coming band like the
Chicks. They played several times, gaining experience and learning
the ropes. All three incarnations of the band played there: the
original lineup of Laura, Robin, Emily, and Martie; the "Shouldn't A
Told You That" lineup without Robin, and the now-famous trio
featuring Natalie Maines singing lead. David Card prides himself
being the only place in the world with pictures of all three versions
of the group on its wall!

So there could be no more fitting place for Robin Macy to make her
return to Dallas. She's been in Kansas since shortly after Domestic
Science Club broke up in 1996, teaching school and playing the local
bluegrass circuit. But now Big Twang is branching out, and it's time
for Robin's homecoming.

The big day is Saturday, August 18. Mark your calendars, and don't
forget to visit Big Twang's web site and order their debut CD,
"Pastures of Plenty" -- only available directly from the band.

And while you're at it, visit the only commercial station in
Dallas/Fort Worth that even has a copy of the pre-Natalie Dixie
Chicks CDs! Call in a request off of "Little Ol' Cowgirl", and tell
'em that the "Web Mama" sent you. :)

** A Dixie Chicks News Flash from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

After a couple of weeks in limbo, the bad news has been officially
confirmed... The Groobees are breaking up. If you don't know The Groobees,
you've probably heard of lead singer Susan Gibson -- she's the songwriter
behind the "New" Chicks' defining hit single, "Wide Open Spaces".

Here is the press release from the Groobees' web site:

- - - - -
http://www.groobees.com/press_release.htm

The Groobees have decided to call it quits after 6 years as a touring and
recording act. The band, formed in Amarillo, TX in 1995, included vocalists
and songwriters Susan Gibson on guitar, banjo, papoose and Scott Melott on
accordion, keyboards and harmonica, Gary Thomason on lead guitar, Todd Hall
on drums and Bobby Schaffer on bass. The members of the band have cited
personal reasons as the impetus behind the split.

The Groobees have released three CD's - This year's Buy One, Get Eleven
Free on Downtime Records, 1999 's The Groobees on Blix Street Records as
well as 1997's Wayside . Buy One, Get Eleven Free and The Groobees landed
in the Top 10 of the Americana and Texas Music charts.

Buy One, Get Eleven Free, is an outstanding 14-song collection with smart
hooks and roots-pop sensibilities. John Nova Lomax writes in the Houston
Press, "Seldom has a studio CD played so live. While this endeavor does
seem deliberate, it doesn't feel forced. Ubiquitous producer, Lloyd Maines,
who also handled the first release, got it right this time. The disk first
seduces us with its canny hooks, and then enamors us with its deep
substance. Gibson's lyrics are as personal and introspective as any in
music today, but her delivery is ballsy, so to speak, and woe-is-me-free."

The group is best known nationally for their original song, "Wide Open
Spaces" which spent 4 weeks atop the Billboard Country Chart as recorded by
the Dixie Chicks.

Scott Melott will be relocating to Austin to join forces with the Groobees
former management company, Big9Management and continue his career in music.

Susan Gibson, author of "Wide Open Spaces" has already embarked on a solo
career. She will playing solo and touring with a band nationally the rest
of the year.

For more information about the Groobees, you can still visit their web
site. The site also includes Susan Gibson's concert dates in the "Tour
Dates" section:

Their latest album -- now their swan song -- is available at CDnow, along
with 1999's self-titled disc. Better get them while you can... look at

** An "Old Chicks" eBay note from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

For those of you whose Dixie Chicks collections are missing a few discs
from before the Chicks hit the big time -- it looks like this is the time
to do some prowling on eBay. With the Chicks not on tour, another album
months away from even starting, and Natalie's baby safely tucked away at
home in Austin, interest in all things Dixie has died down.

As of right now, I found the following items on eBay.com:

1425716888 DIXIE CHICKS *SHOULDN'T A TOLD YOU THAT* CD $26.00 1d 5h 5m
1426808490 Dixie Chicks Little Ol' Cowgirl OOP CD MINT! $15.50 5d 11h 21m
1426500449 Dixie Chicks CD "little ol' cowgirl" 92 *RARE $20.50 7d 7h 25m
1426677138 DIXIE CHICKS RADAR RANGE, MORE! RARE $10.76 8d 2h 48m
1426793760 Dixie Chicks--Little 'ol Cowgirl CD RARE OOP! $29.99 8d 10h 15m

To bid on one of these items, just go to www.ebay.com and plug the item
number (the first number on the line above) into the "Search" box.

Some of these prices are extremely low compared to their peak last year
during the "Fly" tour. The "Shouldn't A Told You That" disc, while not as
rare as "Little Ol' Cowgirl" or "Thank Heavens For Dale Evans", was
fetching $100 and up on a regular basis. Now, it's under $30 with just a
day left to bid.

Note -- I'm not involved in the bidding for these items (my max bid, where
I made one, was quickly shot down). And I'm not selling any of them
(though I can vouch for the integrity of the seller of the Radar Range
cassette). This is just to let y'all know that this is the time to go
bargain hunting!

To find out more about these items, of course, you can visit the
All-Inclusive Page's Complete Discography:

** Natalie's last pre-Chicks gig **

A great little link just came across Nici's Dixie Chicks discussion
list. I suppose it's a cliche that up-and-coming musicians can be found
working in any restaurant in Nashville. Well, Natalie wasn't in
Nashville... she was serving roast beef sandwiches and giving kids their
crayons at Orlando's Italian Restaurant in Lubbock, Texas! In honor of
their most famous ex-employee, Orlando's has put together a little page
with the inside scoop on Natalie's "salad days", so to speak. It's a nice
little story, and even gives some details about Lloyd Maines (Natalie's dad
and a Texas music mainstay) giving that audition tape to the Erwin sisters.

Orlando's: Italian Restaurant - Lubbock, Texas
http://www.orlandos.com/

Interestingly, Natalie started at the restaurant in July 1995 and worked
there through October. She couldn't have been attending Berklee College in
Boston and commuting to work, so some of the "traditional" stories in those
press releases may be just a bit off. Also of note: Natalie quit on
October 26... exactly five days before founding lead singer Laura Lynch was
given her walking papers (according to James Dickerson's "Down Home and
Backstage").

Check it out!

** The Chicks' fellow Texas musicians come together for a good cause **

I just got this note from Tom Geddie, executive director of A.R.T.S. for
People. A.R.T.S. (which stands for Artistic, Recreational, Therapeutic
Services), is a charitable organization here in Dallas that puts musicians
and music therapists, movement therapists, visual artists, and storytellers
in a hundred Dallas-Fort Worth area healthcare facilities and other
community agencies including schools and shelters every month..

It's not directly Dixie Chicks-related, but the project does include many
of the artists who carry on the sound (and grueling touring schedule) of
the Chicks' pre-fame days. Notable in the lineup is Sara Hickman, who
along with founding Dixie Chick guitarist and lead singer Robin Lynn Macy
(and Patty Lege) formed the group Domestic Science Club after Macy left the
Chicks.

If you're interested in the Chicks' Texas Music legacy, check out this CD

Just one item in this letter:

** Photos from the Chicks' first Winfield appearance **

As you may have noticed, I haven't been updating the All-Inclusive Dixie
Chicks Page much lately. But their bluegrass friends still remember the
beautiful sounds they produced back in the "old days", back when the tour
bus was a rickety van, and success meant being able to quit the day jobs.

One of those old-time friends, Leo Eilts of the Santa Fe Trails Bluegrass
Festival (http://www.santafetrails.org/), found some of the pictures from
the Chicks' first appearance at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield,
Kansas. While the Erwin sisters had played there before as teenagers in
Blue Night Express, the 1989 festival was the first time the Dixie Chicks
played the festival as a group. Don Shorock, webmaster of the official and
unofficial Walnut Valley Festival sites, has added three of these pictures
to his "Stage 6 Memories" page, along with Leo's story about the event
(previously published on the All-Inclusive site's Stories page).

Stage 6 - Walnut Valley Festival
http://shorock.com/stage6/

Of course, the pictures aren't glamour shots... they're snapshots of a new
band with a great sound -- one of many such acts at one of the biggest
collections of talent in this hemisphere! But they're a great look back at
the early stages of the Dixie Chicks. From Leo's story of the event:

>When Bob Redford, the festival promoter, came by the next afternoon and
>mentioned that he had an open stage slot if we had someone we wanted to
>put on, I suggested the Dixie Chicks. When I told the girls that I had
>scheduled them on a stage, Laura promptly threw up. When it finally came
>time to play, she was so nervous that my brother and I agreed to go on
>with them and play guitar and bass so that they could concentrate on their
>singing. To my knowledge, that was their first appearance as a band in a

Enjoy!

** An "Newest Chicks" News Flash from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

Although there have been two previous Dixie Chicks kids -- Asia Abraham,
Laura Lynch's daughter, and Martie Erwin's stepson when she was married to
Ted Seidel -- there wasn't a fully home-grown Dixie Chicklet... until now.

According to posters on the Dixie Chicks Fan Discussion List (see
http://www.dixiechicksfans.com/), Natalie Maines gave birth to a six pound
(ounces unknown), 20-inch baby boy named Jackson Slade on March 15,
2001. Mom and Dad (actor/director Adrian Pasdar of "Mysterious Ways") are
said to be doing fine.

The "official" announcement seems to have been during the A&E cable
channel's Loretta Lynn "Live By Request" special. Fellow Dixie Chick Emily
Robison -- always known as the wild one -- called in a request in honor of
the new arrival. No word yet on what song she requested, though "One's On
The Way" would be an obvious choice.

Loretta's controversial track "The Pill" might have also been apropos...
especially if you go back nine months and compare that date with Natalie
and Adrian's wedding date. Although the pregnancy was announced after the
wedding (with a due date in mid-April), many fans on the discussion list
suspected that was simply a matter of being tactful.

Hey, at least she *did* get married -- once again, the Chicks defy the
current entertainment industry trend. Compare with stars like Tanya Tucker
or Madonna... however you do the math, the remaining Dixie Chick marriages
seem downright old-fashioned.

So congratulations to Natalie and Adrian on the blessed event. God bless
your new family!

At least musicians are accustomed to late-night feedings... :)

In this issue: Long time no see, and an opportunity to educate the Chicks'
new teen fans.

** The days go by... **

It's been months since I've made a meaningful update to the All-Inclusive
Dixie Chicks Page, and I'm very sorry for the delays. There have been
several interesting happenings of interest to "Old Chicks" fans -- from
pictures of their first West End appearance to a newly discovered issue of
the Chick Chat newsletter. Not to mention all the additions I need to make
to the Complete Discography!

I appreciate your patience as my "real job" and my work on KHYI.com have
taken me away from the Dixie Chicks site. Hopefully, I'll be able to take
advantage of the Chicks' concert hiatus to catch up on the latest Old
Chicks and New Chicks developments.

** Cosmogirl Magazine wants your Old Chicks Pix! **

I got an interesting request from the Photo Researcher at Cosmogirl
Magazine (www.cosmogirl.com). She's looking for pictures of the Dixie
Chicks from when they were first starting out. I've passed it on to Nici's
Dixie Chicks discussion list (see www.dixiechicksfans.com), where most of
the teenage members are probably familiar with the magazine. I'm hoping,
though, that some of the members of this list may be in a better position
to help Ms. Deakins.

This may be an excellent opportunity to educate the Chicks core fan base --
teen girls who read magazines like Cosmogirl -- on the group's fascinating
history. I've always maintained that it's the sort of story I want my
daughters to emulate -- that with hard work and personal sacrifice, you can
reach your dreams.

On a more mischievous level, I'd love to see the Chicks in full cowgirl
regalia spread across the pages of a major teen magazine! (Yes, I know the
group was already pulling away from that image before Natalie even joined
-- just look at the pictures from after "Shouldn't A Told You That" was
released.)

I still love the cowgirl frills, but I can still take solace in the fact
that the core of the group -- inspired instrumentals and meaningful lyrics
-- is still there in songs like "Cowboy Take Me Away" and "Sin Wagon".

Dear Robert Brooks,

My name is Cat Deakins, and I'm the Photo Researcher at Cosmogirl
Magazine. For our upcoming June/July music issue, we're doing a story on
"Breaking into the Music Business". I'm looking for pictures of famous
musicians from when they were just starting out.

I got your e-mail address from a website of Dixie Chicks fan stories, and I
am writing to ask your help with my research. Do you have any photos of the
Dixie Chicks performing in their early days? or, do you know someone I
could get in touch with who might have publicity or performance photos?

If so, we are very interested in taking a look at them! We will pay the
FedEx shipping cost to send them to our office in NY. And if we decide to
run them, we will pay a usage fee. All photos will be returned promptly.

Please contact me if you think you can help us out.

Thanks SO much!

Sincerely,
Cat Deakins

You may have received a message recently from eGroups about the "merger" of
eGroups with Yahoo!'s "clubs" feature. Please be assured that I am
watching the situation closely.

I selected eGroups (before the Yahoo! merger) because it did not require
list members to supply any personal information to receive messages. It
looks like -- for the moment, at least -- that "Yahoo! Groups" will
continue that policy. Here's what they say in a recent message to some
eGroups members:

>The best part -- you won't have to do anything to convert your group.
>This will happen automatically. All you have to do to access the
>wide array of web functionality is merge your current eGroups
>account with a Yahoo! ID when the new service launches. You don't
>need to do anything now and there will be a very easy-to-use wizard
>to help you do this when the time comes. NOTE: email-only users will
>not need a Yahoo ID.

Your privacy is very important to me: both the KHYI-fans@egroups.com list
and the originalchicks@egroups.com mailing list have private member lists
that are accessible only to me. If anything in the Yahoo! conversion
compromises this confidentiality, I will move the mailing list to some
other service.

There is a large community of list owners who are very passionate about
privacy issues. I believe this community -- and the negative publicity the
could generate if Yahoo! missteps -- will keep eGroups from compromising
your security. But if you notice any problems, please let me know and I'll
look for a solution -- even if that means looking for a new list server.

Thank you for your suport, and God bless!

** An "Old Chicks" News Flash from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

The 1991 45rpm single "Home On The Radar Range" is probably the most
coveted trophy for any Dixie Chicks collector. The last time such an item
appeared on eBay, almost two years ago if I recall correctly, it went for
the steep price of $85.00.

Today, there's a *cassette* copy of "Home On The Radar Range" on eBay...
and the current high bid is a whopping $201.00!

eBay: Dixie Chicks *RARE* Home on the Radar Range
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=515449295

And with five days to go (the auction ends on December 10), this beauty is
poised to shatter the high mark of $200+ paid for a CD of "Thank Heavens
For Dale Evans" this past July.

At that price, one might be concerned about authenticity. In fact, when
the auction was announced on the dixiechicksfans.com fan discussion list,
one poster immediately suggested making copies to trade! But while nothing
is guaranteed, I think the seller's story of how he came by the cassette
may alleviate some fears. I asked if "houdinivideo" would mind sharing his
Dixie Chicks story with the long-time fans on this list, and he kindly obliged:

>As for a story on how I came to own the cassette: I saw the band perform
>at 4 different times between the years of 1991-1993. I saw them in '91
>and '92 at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. I probably saw
>them almost every time they performed at the festival (at least 3 times
>each festival). I also saw them twice at two small venues in Houston,
>where I used to live. One was the Mucky Duck, a pub type place, very
>small, probably 50 people there total and the other was at Rockefeller's,
>around 150-200 people and they shared the show with Trout Fishing in
>America. The show was billed as Fish N' Chicks. :)
>
>I have both the Dale Evans cd and the Little Ol' Cowgirl. I didn't get to
>see them whenever their third cd came out. Also, if I remember, I ordered
>the single vinyl 45 of Radar Range through their mailing list catalog when
>it was available and later bought the cassette single of it when I saw
>them in '92. Unfortunately, the record single got cracked and I think I
>threw it away when I moved to Little Rock in '94. But for the cassette,
>that's how I came to own it. My cd of Dale Evans has the Chicks'
>autographs, including Martie & Emily ERWIN. I don't think I could part
>with that. I might auction the Little Ol' Cowgirl cd someday down the
>line, but not anytime soon.

robertb@...

** An "Old Chicks" News Flash from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

The Dixie Chicks represent only the most visible example of the impact of
"Americana Country" on mainstream country. There are a host of musicians,
from Texas and elsewhere, who have spent years building a new sound rooted
in Country tradition yet distinct from the chart-driven pop sound currently
coming out of Nashville. The Gavin Americana chart has been one of the
most visible signs of this musical revolution... but now it looks like the
"Murder on Music Row" has claimed another victim.

This very depressing message was just posted to the Texas Music community
by Bruce Kidder, morning disc jockey and program director at KHYI 95.3 FM
in Dallas (http://www.khyi.com/). I wonder if Gavin has considered the
fact that only an accident of timing stood between the Dixie Chicks --
Nashville's current darlings -- and the sort of obscurity "enjoyed" by the
artists Bruce lists in his note? If the well-respected music magazine
carries through with their plan to drop this format from their charts,
they'll be missing a golden opportunity -- the chance to say "we were
*there*" when the Americana revolution returns Country Music to its roots.

I am copying this message to Gavin online editor Adrian Zupp -- Mr. Zupp,
this message is being sent to the 480+ members of my "All-Inclusive Dixie
Chicks Page" update announcement list. Our interest in the Dixie Chicks'
Texas roots should help show that the new direction of Country Music has
nothing to do with Nashville or its pre-packaged pop star look-alikes. On
behalf of these fans, I ask you to please reconsider your decision to drop
the chart that shows the most potential for growth. Would you have pulled
out of Seattle just as that scene was developing? Of course not... and you
won't want to pull out of Texas just as the Americana revolution is
beginning to take shape.

For what it is worth.......

This is the one format that has given Texas artists an open ear.....

Max Stalling's Wide Afternoon recently hit #3 nationally, Steve Earle had a
#1, Pat Green was in the Top 10 and Larry Joe Taylor and Tommy Alverson
were climbing.

I don't know what the future holds.....but it is a sad day. Gavin magazine
was the one national radio trade magazine that gave Alt-Country, Texas
Music, and Folk credence.

I have no idea if it will do any good but an e-mail campaign might help! If
you enjoy the sounds of KHYI, KNON, KTFW, or any other Texas leaning

** An "Old Chicks" News Flash from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

As previously reported -- and still under discussion on Nici's email list
-- tonight is the night that Dan Rather is supposed to blow the lid off of
the international Dixie Chicks conspiracy! Not really, but Rather (a
long-time fan) did interview the Chicks and they're *scheduled* to be
featured on tonight's (10/10/2000) edition of "60 Minutes II".

I say "scheduled", because current events have a tendency to pop up at the
most inopportune times. This edition of 60 Minutes II, the season premiere
of the news series, was scheduled for last week but was pre-empted by the
presidential debates. This week, the show goes on... but will the Chicks
be included?

According to the CBS web site, Dan Rather will be talking Firestone Tires,
not the tires on the Dixie Chicks tour bus. He'll be interviewing a
grieving mother who signed a non-disclosure agreement after her son's
death. The site says nothing about the Chicks -- I'm guessing that their
interview will have to be postponed until a later date.

Check it out for yourself:

If the Dixie Chicks segment is rescheduled, I'll be sure to send a note to
this announcement list. You won't want to miss it -- because the rumor is
that the present-day Dixie Chicks aren't the only ones Dan Rather tracked down.

The dixiechicks@egroups.com email discussion group is back up and running,
after spending about 36 hours in limbo. Apparently, a hacker was able to
access the popular list and delete it, giving a deletion reason of "busy
busy busy". Fortunately, eGroups support was able to restore the group in
its entirety -- 450+ members, and thousands of messages dating back to
April 1998.

It came back with breaking news. List owner Nici clipped this article from
launch.com:

>(9/18/00, 1 p.m. ET) - The Dixie Chicks will be the subject of a special
>segment of 60 Minutes II hosted by Dan Rather. Rather, who is also a Texas
>native, interviewed the trio in their hometowns of Lubbock and Dallas, as
>well as in Los Angeles over the summer. The Chicks talked with Rather about
>their sudden success, which they attribute to just being "real," as Natalie
>Maines tells LAUNCH. "We're not acting, we're not dressing in these clothes
>'cause someone's telling us to or playing songs because somebody else says
>they're gonna be hits," she insists. "We get in trouble for saying the wrong
>thing and doing the wrong thing and we don't care. We want to be true to
>ourselves and honest to the fans and to ourselves, and I think that people
>see that and see that this is real."
>
>This particular episode of 60 Minutes II is scheduled to air on CBS on
>October 3. According to a spokesperson for the Chicks, there is a chance that
>a presidential debate might pre-empt the show that night, in which case it

Here's a little "heads up" for members of this list... there's a strong
possibility that the three *current* members of the Dixie Chicks were not
Dan Rather's only interviewees. Stay tuned!

For reasons still unknown, the first and largest Dixie Chicks fan
discussion forum, the dixiechicks@egroups.com email list, has gone
down. There is no trace of the list in eGroups' system, although the name
is still reserved.

I spoke with Rob Davis, co-moderator of the list, and he confirmed that the
list was *not* shut down by him or the list's founder, Nici Larson. In
fact, both Rob and Nici have sent urgent messages to eGroups asking them to
restore the long-standing list.

Founded in April 1998, the list was established to discuss a new group that
had a top-ten single but very little publicity. It has grown to nearly 500
members and has earned a reputation as the best source (online or

When I got home tonight there was a nice little pre-holiday surprise
waiting for me in the mail: my copy of Pastures of Plenty by Big Twang
(featuring founding Chick, Robin Macy). It arrived a day ahead of its
official street date and after the first play, I can say that it is a
definite keeper!

Hearing Robin's voice again on a new CD is the next best thing to finding
some lost recordings of the original Chicks IMHO. Big Twang also has a
little more in common with the early Chicks then just one founding member.
Pastures of Plenty was mixed and mastered at Crystal Clear Sound, source of
the three Indy Dixie Chicks albums. Plus, as Robert (or others?) pointed
out, it includes a song recorded by the Chicks on Shouldn't a Told Ya That
after Robin left (I've Only Got Myself to Blame) and the lil ol' cowboy on
the cover is definitely reminiscent of the little ol' cowgirl on the front
of the Chicks second Indy album (and Robin's last), and the "pasture" in
which the cover was shot is six miles east of Winfield, Kansas where the
Erwin sisters played in their bluegrass days. Pastures of Plenty also
includes a Mary Chapin Carpenter tune, as did Little Ol' Cowgirl (though it
is a different song).

All the connections to the original Chicks apart, the album has much to
recommend it. The production on Pastures of Plenty is simple and
straightforward, uncluttered you might say, yet very cohesive and balanced.
In a word, musical. Don't expect to find driving drums here though, of the
Nashvegas computerized variety or otherwise, this is traditional bluegrass
instrumentation (i.e., no drums allowed). That instrumentation and the
uncluttered production allow you to hear the banjo and guitars quite
clearly, and sweet tones they are though not as much so as Robin's
distinctive voice, that sultry Texas talking yodel that first caught my ear
with the Chicks' Indy releases. If I have one negative thing to say about
the album it is that I would like to hear Robin sing more. She does the
lead vocals on only six or roughly half the songs (#1, 3, 5, 8, 10 &
alternating on 11), and her voice steals the show, particularly on Blame
and the title track. If you are still on the fence about buying this CD, go
to www.bigtwang.com for links to three full songs the band posted on
mp3.com and have a listen for yourself. For the samples, which are full
length, you have nothing to lose but time. They are free of charge with the
band's blessing. If you like those, you'll love the rest of the CD.

Happy trails,
Gerry

This album, released on Ricky Skaggs' independent Skaggs Family Records

of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. The Chicks' contribution, "Walk Softly (On My

to the limit, maybe a little beyond... and it works. For a
smoothly-polished cookie-cutter voice, tune in your local country

Several country radio stations have received advance copies of this disc,
but you'll only hear it on a regular basis on insurgent country stations
like Dallas' 95.3 The Range (http://www.khyi.com/). With four tracks by
each of the Sony/Lucky Dog artists, recorded live at Texas' famous Gruene
Hall, it's an absolute party-in-a-box. But you'll realize before long that
the fans aren't just coming for the beer... Charlie, Bruce, and Jack are
consummate musicians and entertainers.

Bruce Robison's wife Kelly Willis (like his sister-in-law Emily Erwin
Robison) has a discography that extends well past the currently available
releases. This disc features several out-of-print tracks that Village
Records (http://www.villagerecords.com/) describe as "a great introduction
to this compelling artist". By the way, Kelly also sings a duet with Bruce
on the "Unleashed Live" CD mentioned above.

** Natalie used to be a cowgirl? **

Yep, and we've got the pictures to prove it!

I was looking at the Dixie Chicks items on eBay and found an item I'd never
seen before -- a 1994 tribute to Charlie Goodnight, by Andy Wilkinson,
featuring 19-year-old Natalie singing "White Women's Clothes".

But the icing on the cake is the book that came with the "Box Set" version
of the release. In it is a pencil drawing of Natalie Maines -- as a Little
Ol' Cowgirl! Not the sequins & rhinestones "Old Chicks" look, though...
more of a prairie maiden look. It's no wonder this fascinating set just
closed at $81.00, and I have reports that it's sold as high as $325:

eBay: Dixie Chicks * Natalie Maines First CD * OOP
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=421024540

There's good news, though, if you're interested in getting your own
copy. The CD-only version of this rare release is also currently available
at eBay -- for another couple of days:

eBay: Dixie Chicks Natalie Maines First CD! No book
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=423964071

This release is currently going for $30, so it's a great chance to snag a
rare bit of Dixie Chicks history. I'm the only bidder so far, but don't
worry -- that $30 is as high as I can go, and I'm kind of hoping that I
*don't* get it. It's not exactly in the budget this month!

In this issue: Big Twang album nearing release, an early review, the new
site design goes live, and the current Chicks play on a bluegrass tribute disc.

** Big Twang song list and more **

The song list for the upcoming Big Twang CD, "Pastures of Plenty", has just
been released on the BigTwang.com web site, along with the snail mail
address for orders -- including T-Shirt orders. You can also find a
picture of the cover: it's a "Little Ol' Cowboy" standing in a field of
green (something?), blue sky behind him, hands on his holsters -- ready for
trouble.

The site has also been updated with a fascinating "News" section with
articles from the Wichita Eagle and the Kansas City Star (the KC Star
article references dixie-chicks.com!). You'll also find an updated tour
listing that includes their appearance at this year's Walnut Valley
Festival in Winfield, Kansas... more on that later.

Here's the song list from "Pastures of Plenty":

   1. I've Only Got Myself to Blame 3:45 (Tony Lane)
   2. Stealin' Away 2:39 (Darren Wilcox, (c)1988 D. Ashley Music, BMI)
   3. Pastures of Plenty 4:04 (Woody Guthrie, Ludlow Music, Inc.)
   4. Missin' the Mrs. 3:28 (D. Wayne/D. Willis, Morgan Active
      Music/Cristy Lane Music, ASCAP)
   5. Secret Journey 3:42 (Sting, EMI Virgin Music, Inc. ASCAP)
   6. Casey Lynn 3:17 (Darren Wilcox, (c)1988 D. Ashley Music, BMI)
   7. High Noon 3:17 (Troy Gilchrist, (c)1996)
   8. Reserved For the One I Love 3:24 (Colin Boyd, (c)1992 Cake Taker
Songs/Atlantic Music Corp./Con Queso Songs BMI)
   9. Blue Letter 2:15 (Curtis/Curtis, Catpatch Music Publishing Co.,
      ASCAP)
10. Time of Inconvenience 4:20 (Nanci Griffith, Ponder Heart/Irving
      Music, Inc. BMI)
11. Why Walk When You Can Fly/Sail Away Ladies 3:55 (Mary
Chapin-Carpenter/traditional, 1994 Why Walk Music, arrangement by
      Big Twang)

These songs include some interesting links to Robin's previous
efforts. "Reserved For The One I Love" and "Time of Inconvenience" were
both included on Domestic Science Club's "Three Women" release (which
featured Robin Macy, Sara Hickman, and Patty Lege). Most interesting,
though, is "I've Only Got Myself to Blame" -- previously recorded by the
Dixie Chicks *after* Robin left.

Go to the "Tunes" section of the Big Twang site to see the album image --
and follow the link to Big Twang's MP3.com page. It's got full-length
samples of "Blame", "Reserved", and "Stealin' Away" (which features Darren
Wilcox's lead vocals).

** The first review **

Big Twang will be playing the Winfield festival this year, and the
festival's web site now includes a page on the group. They'll have a full
schedule at Walnut Valley 2000: six stage appearances, capped off by a
Stage 1 concert at the very end of the festival. The last sounds festival
goers will take home with them will be the sounds of Big Twang!

Obviously, the group's individual members have a long history at
Winfield. The combination promises to be dynamite, as suggested by this
advance review of "Pastures of Plenty" at the festival's web site:

>Once upon a time, Robin Macy played the Walnut Valley Festival with a
>particularly well-known chick group. Last year, she performed with Blue
>Plate Special. In 2000, Macy and Blue Plate Special bandmate Ken White are
>on the bill with Big Twang, a Kansas roots music supergroup of sorts.
>White and Macy are joined by Darren Wilcox, Troy Gilchrist and Jeff
>Scroggins. Among the band members' extensive past credits are stints with
>New Tradition, Special Consensus and the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Big
>Twang's first recording is "Pastures of Plenty." Its 11 songs are rootsy
>and acoustic, bursting with the freedom of rock and the bite of bluegrass.

** The Denim look goes live **

After a few last-minute tweaks, the new Denim Blue look for the
All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page has gone live! The new layout will allow
me to display breaking Dixie Chicks news on the front page while still
giving the casual surfer easy access to the site's core content.

Another new feature is the eBay report: a weekly (or so) look at the price
of Old Chicks CDs and other items. The summary is in a box on the home
page, with a link to extended information on eBay and other online sources
of info about the traditional country sound that the Chicks have brought
back to life.

** Chicks pay tribute to Bill Monroe **

More details will be forthcoming on the Chicks' contribution to Ricky
Skaggs' tribute to his mentor, "The Father of Bluegrass", Bill Monroe. The
album is currently available for advance order from CDnow, the cover art is
on display, and CDnow is featuring an interview with Skaggs in which he
selects his favorite releases by Bill Monroe. The only thing missing is a
song list! That should be available soon after the disc is released August
29 -- and more than likely, it'll include a sound sample of the Chicks'
contribution.

To order your copy now, go to this link and search on "Ricky Skaggs". "Big

** It's not just a rumor this time! **

Last year, Natalie and the Chicks pulled a little joke. They spread a
rumor that Natalie was pregnant, and that the dad was none other than
Dallas' hunky hometown boy Deryl Dodd. Natalie later admitted to Jay Leno
that they did it to see how fast the rumor would spread... thanks to the
Internet and lists like Nici's dixiechicks@egroups.com, it spread like
wildfire.

This time, it's not a rumor! Here's the announcement from
MusicCountry.com, a sponsor of the Fly tour:

>Natalie faces next challenge: motherhood
>
>Firmly in the middle of her multi-platinum selling group's first headline
>tour, Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines has another situation
>occupying her thoughts: she's having a baby.
>
>Maines and husband Adrian Pasdar announced Monday that Maines is pregnant
>with the couple's first child. The ecstatic father-to-be got a little
>ahead of himself, saying "This is merely the first of ten children."
>Maines and Pasdar were married June 24 in Las Vegas.

A hot topic on Nici's list -- once the news was confirmed -- was the
timing. According to a Sony Nashville press release, the baby is due in
April 2001 -- which puts the conception date *after* Natalie's Las Vegas
wedding. Hopefully this fact will not be lost on the Dixie Chicks' huge
cadre of teenage fans... first, you get married, *then* you have
babies. "Wild Child" Natalie Maines as a role model? Believe it.

** The latest look: Denim **

I'd like to welcome my site's second anniversary with a redesign. Check
out the latest attempt at a unique look at the Beta Site, hosted on Tripod:

The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page (Beta)
http://rbrooks.tripod.com/index.html#top

I've added a new feature that I hope will be a hit: an "Indie Dixie Chicks
eBay Report". I hope to update the box weekly with the latest prices on
rare pre-Sony Dixie Chicks recordings, since eBay and other auctions are
the only place these rare gems can now be found. Prices seem to have gone
down from their high in mid-July -- I can't find a closed auction with a
winning bid for "Thank Heavens For Dale Evans" higher than $123.00. It had
been trading in the over-$200 range.

Some of y'all have commented on the ugly Tripod banner ad at the top of
each page. That WILL NOT APPEAR on the "Live" site. If I do run banner
ads some day, I'll integrate them into the site much more
seamlessly. Meanwhile, when navigating the Beta site, just scroll down
until the banner ad is off the screen -- that's what the final result will
look like.

The title banner needs some work, too, but I think I'm stuck with it for a
while. If anyone would like to put together something a bit prettier,
please be my guest! I'll make sure to credit you on the site and in this
newsletter.

** Preview of "Down Home and Backstage" **

The title of James Dickerson's new book, "Dixie Chicks - Down Home and
Backstage", may make it sound like just another quickie bio, destined for
the bargain bin. Don't be fooled. It's been in the works for well over a
year, and Dickerson's research into the Chicks' rich history pays
off. This is the definitive history of the Chicks' rise, fall, and
explosion onto the mainstream Country scene. I'll post a more detailed
review on the site in the future... meanwhile, I highly recommend this book
for its dead-on chronicling of the period from the late '80s through Laura
Lynch's 1995 departure from the band.

You can purchase the book from your favorite book seller. I'm still
looking for an online bookstore to link to -- linking to Amazon is not an
option, because I don't want to steal CD sales from my CDnow links. Any
suggestions would again be welcome.

** An "Old Chicks" News Update from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page **

Dallas' WFAA Channel 8 ran a *long* feature last night on the Dixie Chicks'
triumphant return to Dallas -- and it's good news for Chicks fans, 'cause
it's archived at broadcast.com!

Go to this URL and select the 8/10/2000, 10pm newscast:

WFAA-TV: Television on Yahoo! Broadcast
http://www.broadcast.com/television/wfaa/broadcast.html

Here are some highlights. Use the slider in your RealPlayer to advance to
the time index shown.

23:00 Teaser - 15 seconds or so before commercial

25:45 Live just as the concert is letting out

26:25 Tape from the concert (performing "Ready To Run"), with fan
interviews from before the show. This leads up to the best seque ever:

[fan being interviewed]: They're from here, just like us. What more could
you ask for?

Cut to... Laura, Robin, Emily, and Martie playing "Rider". *That* is "what
more *I* could ask for"! This section starts at about 27:00 and includes
closeup shots of Laura, Robin, and early Emily and Martie playing in an
early '90s concert, possibly at Poor David's Pub. Also includes a scene
from the "Shouldn't A Told You That" post-Robin era, with an interview with
a long-time fan at the concert. Then a brief recap of their sudden rise to
fame, and some more fan interviews.

28:24 The surprise of the night: A live interview with Laura Lynch! She
is so sweet and gracious... and at the end of the segment, when someone in
the crowd yells "Go Chicks!", you can see every bit of the genuine love she
has for the group as she grins a grin as big as Texas, as the crowd goes
wild behind her.

The segment ends at about 30:00 as they seque over to sports (we have a
40-minute newscast, since everything's bigger in Texas). That's 4 minutes
and 15 seconds of airtime devoted to the Dixie Chicks -- over 10% of the
entire program! That's yet another testament to how much Dallas loves
their Dixie Chicks -- old and new.

Even if your bandwidth stinks and you can only get the audio -- run this
clip. It's a must for all Chicks fans.

** An "Old Chicks" News Update from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page **

I just received this message that should be of interest to all fans of the
first two Dixie Chicks CDs (that is, "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans" and
"Little Ol' Cowgirl"). Robin Macy's new group, Big Twang, is now taking
advance orders for their first release, "Pastures of Plenty". As guitarist
Troy Gilchrist notes below, the bigtwang.com site is still taking shape --
you'll need to send a note to their email (info@...) for more details.

Be sure to check out the site -- there's a great picture of the band on the

incredibly honored to be selected as a link from Robin's new project, and
I'd like to thank Big Twang for their gracious consideration.

technical notes.

** Big Twang set to release "Pastures of Plenty" **

After much anticipation, Big Twang's web site is up and running. And just
in the nick of time, because their debut album is coming soon! According
to the site, "Pastures of Plenty" is set for release just in time for the
Walnut Valley Festival in mid-September. Saturday, September 2 is the date
set for the album release party, so the album should be out shortly after.

The Bio page is full of fascinating information -- it turns out that Robin
has stayed active in education, teaching Geometry at a Wichita private
school. Troy Gilchrist, one of the members of Blue Night Express (along
with sister Sharon and future Chicks Emily and Martie Erwin), is a
published writer and certified masseur. Jeff Scroggins fixes a mean green
chili stew, Ken White hails from Kentucky, and Darren Wilcox is "a soul man
trapped in a white man's body".

You've got to check it out! I'll send a note to the list as soon as CDnow
has "Pastures of Plenty" available for Advance Order. Meanwhile, here are

** Technical Notes **

eGroups, the host of this and hundreds of other mailing lists, is in the
process of merging with Yahoo!. Of course, eGroups says everything will go
smoothly, but they are planning some changes to ad
placement. Announcement-only lists like this one will be subjected to an
ad at the *top* of the message instead of at the bottom. If this happens,
don't worry... just scroll down for the rest of the update. If a worthy
competitor to eGroups comes on the scene, I may consider moving... but so
far, their competitors either have no respect for privacy (ListBot), have
an unknown track record, or were already swallowed up by eGroups (OneList).

I haven't done anything further on the site redesign, but I want to get
something together before the Big Twang release. I'll keep y'all
informed! Meanwhile, you can check out the web project that takes up most
of my time these days -- the all-new KHYI.com site! KHYI 95.3 in Dallas is
one of the only broadcasters who will play the original Dixie Chicks
tracks, and that's just the start of their commitment to real country
music. If you're fed up with the Garthinization of country music, dial up
KHYI.com and listen online. You'll find that country didn't die -- it just
went underground.

** Dixie Chicks pay tribute to Bill Monroe **

According to a news article posted to Nici's Dixie Chicks discussion list,
the rumored Ricky Skaggs tribute to Bill Monroe is nearing completion, with
the release date set for August 29. Along with artists from Bruce Hornsby
to Dolly Parton to Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Dixie Chicks will be paying
homage to the "Father of Bluegrass". Skaggs, who will be opening several
tour dates for the Chicks, will join the girls to sing "My Little Georgia
Rose", a Monroe song from the 1950s.

** New Look met with Stunned Silence **

While the updates above were important enough to move to the "Live" site
right away, the "New Look" on the Beta site is not going anywhere... at
least not yet. Initial reviews of the new look range from "Ick" to "That's
more like a 'New Chicks' color scheme". So I'm still working on it. Any
suggestions would be much appreciated! I tried using a
checkerboard-tablecloth pattern, but it's positively ugly. If you've got
the intestinal fortitude, check out the colors and the checks on the Beta
site... and don't be afraid to tell me just what you think!

** All-Inclusive on the radio! **

Tomorrow, 6/27/2000, I'm scheduled to appear on Katie Pruett's "Eye on the
Internet" radio show! The show airs on Dallas' KRLD 1080 AM, and my
segment should be on around 7:30pm. Katie will be talking to me about the
site and some of the interesting things that have happened to
"All-Inclusive" over the past two years. This will be my second radio
interview, but the first that I'll get feedback on -- I was interviewed by
a Knoxville country station's morning crew last year, but never heard back
whether they even aired it.

The bad news is that CBS, KRLD's corporate owners, have a policy of not
broadcasting over the Internet. Even though you can read all about the
station and its shows on the 'net (at http://www.krld.com/), you can't
listen live. This has been a frustration for net-savvy radio folks like
Katie for quite a while, but so far, nothing has changed CBS's mind on this
subject. And they wonder why their TV shows have such a low rating in the
under-40 age bracket...

To learn more about Katie Pruett's "Eye On The Internet" show, use this
handy (if cryptic) direct URL:

KRLD-News Radio-1080
http://www.krld.com/goout.asp?u=/viewentry.asp?id=13405

And if Katie's name sounds familiar, but you can't remember why, check out
the Site History page. We won't be talking about Katie's special
contribution to the site -- she says the rest of the story is much more
interesting.

latest additions to the Beta site.

** Time for a road trip? **

This news just in from the Winfield-L listsrv, the discussion list for the
Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. It's short notice, but if
you've been itching for a road trip, here's your chance!

Subject: 2 Free shows Thursday
To: winfield-l@...

In Winfield, Thursday evening, there are two big shows planned, and both
are free.

First, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Big Twang will play outdoors at the 10th and
Millington parking lot, behind the Walnut Valley Festival office. Big Twang
won the 1999 RockyGrass Band Championships. Its members may be better known
from their past groups. One was in New Tradition, another in Special
Concensus and a third in the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Most compelling is
lead singer Robin Macy who was a founding member of the megagroup Dixie
Chicks. If you liked Blue Plate Special at Walnut Valley '99, come see the
latest incarnation of the group.

Not only is Big Twang not to be missed, but there will be free hot dogs
served during the show. Both the food and Big Twang appear courtesy of
Webber Land Company, celebrating 25 years in Winfield.

Closing the evening will be Stacey Sanders, an Enid, Okla., singer,
songwriter and guitar player. He has a tongue-in-cheek view of the world of
romance, and his stories will alternately bust your gut and tear your heart
out.

Stacey will play in The Main Course, 800 Main, from 7 to 9 p.m. Of course,
desserts and coffee will be for sale, and so will his CD, "Invisible
Highway," which features fellow Oklahoman Bryon Berline.

To learn lots more about Town Night, visit the web link
http://www.winfieldcourier.com/w000527/Tues4.html
or tune into KSOK 107.9 FM about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

See you there!

** Big Twang on mp3.com **

In related news, I've mentioned before that Big Twang has graciously made
three full-length tracks available for download at mp3.com:

MP3.com - Big Twang
http://www.mp3.com/BigTwang/

But there are some new developments here, too. It appears that mp3.com has
started to pay artists for the visitors they bring, and Big Twang has
racked up over $24 so far. While that's not enough to buy a good set of
banjo strings, it does give you a way to directly support Robin Macy's
latest effort in a tangible way. You can find more information at the
mp3.com site -- it'll give you something to read while you're downloading.

An example on the other end of the spectrum... a group out of New Mexico
called "The Dixie Dicks" has a song called "My Name Is Earl" on mp3.com.
It's a response to "Goodbye Earl", and is one of the top country downloads.
The track has earned over $900 bucks for the group!

** Speaking of money... **

mp3.com has also added another new feature that could help boost awareness
of Big Twang's music. They've always had charts by genre and sub-genre,
like this one:

MP3.com > New Grass
http://genres.mp3.com/music/country/bluegrass/new_grass/

Now, they've added a new feature: the Payola section. Every week, mp3.com
conducts an auction, and the top 10 bidders in each genre get the song they
picked added to the "Payola Songs" listing. The bidding starts on
Wednesdays, and Big Twang's tracks would be included in the "Country" genre
(which includes bluegrass, new grass, and others).

The only requirement is that you have the "Song ID" of the song you want to
plug, and the folks in Big Twang were kind enough to pass them on:

Blame - Song ID: 385668
Reserved For The One I Love - Song ID: 385676
Stealing Away - Song ID: 385666

The mp3.com auctions are offline for the moment, but when they start up
again (scheduled for sometime today), you can support Big Twang with a bid!
I checked mid-auction a couple of weeks ago, and the winning bids ranged
from $2 to $14. As I recall (but don't quote me), the top 10 bidders all
pay the *lowest* amount among those 10 (they call it a "Yankee Auction").

Next week, I may try to put together an organized effort to push one of the
Big Twang tracks up the chart. Any feedback on which of the three would be
the best "first single" would be much appreciated! I lean towards "Blame"
-- a remake of one of the tracks on "Shouldn't A Told You That".

** Beta Site Updates **

If you're enough of a die-hard fan to have read this far, you may be
interested in the latest updates on the Beta site. I make changes to the
Tripod version of the All-Inclusive site before moving them to the "Live"
version at dixie-chicks.com.

5/4: Updated "Hole in my Head" with writer credits & links
http://rbrooks.tripod.com/fly.html

I don't have all the writer credits because I still don't own a retail copy
of Fly! Isn't that pitiful?

5/9: Added "Bat out of Nashville" to the Rumored/Future Releases
http://rbrooks.tripod.com/hitdisc2.html

Dixie Chicks cover fellow Dallasite, Meat Loaf. Hmmm.

5/16: Add link to wireless web version

Yes, if you have an Internet-enabled moble phone, you can view selected
portions of The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page right in the palm of your
hand! I added a link to the wireless version from the (beta) main page of
the site, but you can punch this in to your phone if you've got nimble
fingers:

Dixie Chicks
http://www.tagtag.com/dixiechicks/

Or just go to mopilot.com, a wireless search engine, and enter "Dixie". It
looks like, so far, "All-Inclusive" is the only Dixie Chicks site on the
Wireless Web!

All I've converted so far is the "Indie" section of the Discography, but
I'll add more when (if?) I get some feedback from mobile Chicks fans.

** An exclusive offer from the All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! **

This announcement list is usually devoted to updates about the
dixie-chicks.com site, with occasional notes about Dixie Chicks history in
the news. But a friend from another list has something y'all might be
interested in: a copy of the *way* out-of-print Dixie Chicks debut CD,
"Thank Heavens For Dale Evans"!

She is considering putting the album on eBay, but she would like to see
this very special piece of Dixie Chicks history go to someone who will
value it from more than just a money perspective. So y'all get first crack
at it! But it's not going to be cheap... copies of this rare disc have
shot up to the $150+ range, and that's *before* the Dixie Chicks go on
their 70-city headline tour.

Here is the writeup she is planning to use on eBay:

- - - - -
Dixie Chick 1991 CD release "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans"

This is their first CD and other early Dixie Chicks CD's like "Little Ol'
Cowgirl" and "Shouldn't A Told You That" are still available - but "Thank
Heavens For Dale Evans" is a rare find!!

Featuring:
Robin Lynn Macy: guitar, lead and harmony vocals
Laura Lynch: acoustic bass, lead and harmony vocals
Martie Erwin: fiddle, viola, harmony vocals
Emily Erwin: banjo, harmony vocals
With special guest Dave Peters on mandolin
Notice that this album is all acoustic...

CD was produced and arranged by the Dixie Chicks.
Recorded in Dallas in 1990.

It is complete with original (and in good condition) liner notes that have
pics of the girls in the early days and all the lyrics to the songs!
Including original song by Martie Erwin, Robin Lynn Macy & Lisa
Brandenburg: the title cut "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans".

For more on the Dixie Chicks and this CD check out
http://www.dixie-chicks.com/evans.html

If you're interested, please send your bid to MusicofTx@... by
Wednesday night (4/10/2000) at 7pm Central time. Please note that because
of the prices being paid on eBay, she can not accept bids for less than $140.

By the way, I don't get any cut, myself. I'm just helping out a friend...
and hopefully helping a lucky Dixie Chicks fan get the crowning piece for
their collection. If you have any questions, please direct them to
MusicofTx@.... Good luck!

** Discography Updates: Blasts from the Past **

Natalie Maines' fans may recognize Pat Green's name -- her ex-husband
Micheal Tarabay used to play bass for Green before following Natalie to
Nashville. It was no surprise, then, when it was reported on Nici's Dixie
Chicks discussion list that Natalie had sung on a Pat Green release
sometime around the time she and Tarabay were married. After some research
(and after asking the folks on the Pat Green list), I found out that she
sings on two tracks on "George's Bar", released in early 1997. One of the
tracks is a duet of Natalie and Pat Green, and it has some of the same
intensity as her later unreleased duet with Deryl Dodd.

For details on "George's Bar" (and CDnow sound sample links), this URL will
take you directly to the Complete Discography entry:

Dixie Chicks Complete Discography: The Indie Releases
Pat Green - "George's Bar"
http://www.dixie-chicks.com/qkdisc.html#george

No surprises there. But it turned out that Natalie had sung backgrounds on
another Pat Green release... his first release, "Dancehall Dreamer". It
was issued in Fall 1995 -- a pivotal period in Dixie Chicks history. In
October 1995, Natalie joined the group in the place of founding lead singer
Laura Lynch.

I think this release may answer one of the nagging little questions in
Dixie Chicks history: how was an unknown singer from the Panhandle able to
cut a demo tape so good that it changed the makeup of a group that had just
signed a major-label deal?

Pretty simply, as it turns out. At some point in mid-1995, Natalie was
already in the studio -- Crystal Clear Sound, the Chicks' label. The
producer was none other than Lloyd Maines, Natalie's dad -- the top
producer in the entire state of Texas. If he just happened to have a song
in his pocket written by the Erwin sisters, then all the pieces fall into
place.

Check out Pat Green's debut release, "Dancehall Dreamer", for yourself:

** The Groobees **

No other artist had quite the impact on the Dixie Chicks' road to fame as
did The Groobees and their lead singer, Susan Gibson. Gibson wrote "Wide
Open Spaces" about her own experiences leaving home, but the song was so
personal and touching that Sony originally balked at even including the
song on the Dixie Chicks major-label debut. The Chicks pushed for it -- a
habit that continues today with controversial tracks like "Sin Wagon" and,
of course, "Goodbye Earl". The song topped the Country charts for 4 weeks,
cementing the Dixie Chicks' status as Country stars and paving the way for
the independence they showed on "Fly".

In recognition of The Groobees' contribution to the Dixie Chicks'
direction, I've included all three of their releases in the Discography.

The group's first two releases are hard to find, so I may update these
sections as I get more information:

Dixie Chicks Complete Discography: The Indie Releases
The Groobees - "Flying Machine" and "Wayside"
http://www.dixie-chicks.com/qkdisc.html#flymach

Their newest release, on the Blix Street label, is climbing the Americana
charts and is available through the CDnow links on the page:

** Back to the Future **

The most exciting addition to the Discography is a release that hasn't even
come out yet. Robin Lynn Macy is back!

While Laura Lynch left the Dixie Chicks to live the cowgirl life, Robin
never stopped playing the music she loved. After leaving in 1992 to focus
on a more traditional sound, she cut two albums with the Domestic Science
Club (Robin, Sara Hickman, and Patty Lege). She worked on Dallas' public
radio station KERA before they discontinued their music programming, and
finally ended up in the Wichita, Kansas area -- one of the country's
hottest traditional music regions.

She married musician Mark Bennett, and they and some friends formed "Blue
Plate Special", touring the southern Kansas coffeehouse circuit. But at
some point after the 1999 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, the dynamic
music scene brought changes that appear to have kindled Robin's memories of
touring -- and recording.

She's now one of the lead singers for "Big Twang", a group much like
"Danger in the Air" -- four guys and a lady. And this group has goals
beyond Kansas. According to information from the Winfield-L mailing list,
Big Twang has plans to issue an album of traditional music in summer 2000!
Even better, the group has taken to the Internet, putting three full-length
songs up for public download at mp3.com.

Get all the details, including a link to the group's mp3's:

Big Twang (Summer 2000)

** Still more changes! **

Look for even more changes to the Complete Discography, including:

* Changes previously in Beta: Updates to "Fly", "Soundtrack for a
Century", and "Sheryl Crow - Live from Central Park".

* Emily and Martie singing backup on Keith Urban's first US solo release.

* Two spoken-word releases, with reviews by Dixie Chicks Discussion list
member Michael Curtis.

* A bluegrass instrumental tribute that credits dixie-chicks.com in the
liner notes!

* Find out why Bug Music is a safe home for the Chicks' original songs.

* Got Karaoke?

** Coming soon **

While cleaning my desk, I found something you'll like: the Spring/Summer
1993 Chick Chat! It includes the Chicks' invitation to the Predidential
Inauguration, the obituary for the old blue van, and an introduction to the
famous Pink RV. It really did have "pink carpet, pink chairs, pink sofa,
[and] pink formica accoutrements"!

I'll transcribe it when I get a chance... meanwhile, thanks (and
apologies!) to Suzanne, who gave me her extra copy when we were scanning
her wonderful Scrapbook. If you haven't visited the Suzanne's Scrapbook
section of the site, you're missing the most complete pictorial history of
the Dixie Chicks on the 'net:

Suzanne's Dixie Chicks Scrapbook

** Yaaaa-hoo! **

Thank you for supporting the All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page! Thanks to
your support and input, "All-Inclusive" just recieved one of the 'net's
highest honors: a Yahoo! "Cool Site" designation. You can't just write
Yahoo! and ask for this -- you just go check out the competition and poof,
there it is. But I would have never gotten those cute little sunglasses
without your help.

Happy Easter! Good luck, and God bless.

** An "Old Chicks" News Update from The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page **

Today was the end of the line for one of the landmarks of Dixie Chicks
history. KYNG, Dallas' Young Country 105.3 (http://www.young-country.com/)
had been the subject of format-change rumors for months, but it became
semi-official when all the facts came together in a March 20 article by
Alan Balthrop, in his online column at RadioDigest
(http://www.radiodigest.com/).

According to the article, the station is looking to change to a talk format
featuring in-your-face personalities like Howard Stern, G Gordon Liddy, and
others whose brains fell out of their mouths long ago (editorial comment).
The article noted that Russ Martin, a DJ from Dallas' last rock station
(KEGL the Eagle, http://www.kegl.com/) had jumped ship to an unnamed
400,000-watt station "that is not ready to make an announcement yet".
Today (4/3/00), at 6am, Martin and a few other open mouths took the mike
and started doing their job -- offending people so badly that they can't
change the channel for fear of missing something good.

Alan Balthrop's article is excellent news and background, and includes the
history of the station. The only thing he didn't mention is that Young
Country 105.3 FM was the first major market commercial station to play the
Dixie Chicks... in 1992! They played "She'll Find Better Things To Do" off
of the '92 indie release "Little Ol' Cowgirl", and hopes were high that the
exposure would lead to a record deal. But later that year, Robin Macy left
the group, and any momentum the album had built may have been lost... plus
which, local label Crystal Clear Records just didn't have the moolah to put
on a full-scale blitz, especially in those pre-net days.

Losing KYNG will be a personal loss for me as well. As I've detailed on my
History page, former midday DJ Katie Pruett not only mentioned my site in
her Dixie Chicks bio, but was the top bidder when the dixie-chicks.com
domain came up for sale on eBay. She bought it for no small sum and very
graciously donated it to me for use by my site -- with no compensation by
the station or anything like that.

Although Katie left the station earlier this year, I was hoping that the
station's corporate owners would continue to support the format that the
station had helped create... but it didn't come as a surprise to anyone at
the station. Soon after the Balthrop article broke, KYNG's largest
competitors (KSCS 96.3 and 99.5 The Wolf) started running vulture ads that
said things like "Now that Young Country is gone" -- a week before the
change. With the secret out, the last week was one long party for the
soon-to-be unemployed air staff. They even wrote a little song to the tune
of the Dixie Chicks' "Goodbye Earl" celebrating the station's history and
bemoaning its end.

The last four songs on Young Country:

"Bye Bye" (Jodee Messina)
"Young Country Had To Die"
"(We Are) Young Country" (Hank Williams, Jr.)
"The Dance" (Garth Brooks)

But things do come full circle. Even though Young Country has gone away,
there are still three country stations in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex,
and one of them plays the Dixie Chicks' indie recordings. Don't count on
KSCS 96.3 and KPLX 99.5 getting all those listeners... some of them just
might discover true country music being played at KHYI 95.3 "The Range".
Remember how the Dixie Chicks sounded so unique in a field of Garth and
Shania sound-a-likes? Listen for yourself at http://www.khyi.com/ and see
what real country music sounds like. You'll be glad you did.

** Time Flies... **

... even when you're not having fun at all. The nature of my job makes
updates during the US tax season difficult to impossible, but I'm finally
finding time to save my site from stagnation. I've made some updates to my
Beta site that you may want to check out -- and if you find any problems,
please let me know.

By the way, the Beta site is where I make changes that may not be "ready
for prime time". When I'm happy with the changes, I move them from the
Beta site (hosted by Tripod) to the main site at dixie-chicks.com.

** Time to "Fly" **

I hadn't updated my pages on the Dixie Chicks' already-multi-platinum fifth
release, "Fly", since shortly after it was released. In fact, I still had
two out-of-date pages: one with first-hand information about an early
summer 1999 demo of the album, and one with guesses about the content based
on a track list. I've combined these into a single page, which includes
all the information from both. You'll find quick notes about most tracks,
plus a detailed analysis of each track that rates it by "Old Chicks" sound,
"New Chicks" attitude, and Radio Chances. Also of interest will be the
sidebar with the story of the showdown over the Chicks' latest chart
single, "Goodbye Earl".

Dixie Chicks: Fly [beta]
http://rbrooks.tripod.com/fly.html

** Time to look back **

I've also updated the Complete Discography with updated information on
"Fly", the Sony "Soundtrack for a Century" series, and the release of the
Sheryl Crow "Live From Central Park" release that features the Chicks'
first live recording. Check it out to find out an "Old Chicks" reference
that Sony put in their "Soundtrack" series without even knowing it! You'll
also be able to check out my thoughts on how Sony turned "Earl" from a flop
into a hit by going over the heads of the Program Directors -- and selling
directly to the fans.

** Time for some self-congratulations **

The song goes, "Gonna see my smiling face on the cover of the Rolling
Stone..." Well, I didn't get on the cover... but "All-Inclusive" got a
writeup in the current (3/30/2000) edition of Rolling Stone Magazine! So
what that it's just one long sentence, one column inch, in the magazine's
new NetBook section. They're still in the process of adding "NetBook" as a
feature accessible from the web site, so it's a little tough to get to...
in fact, when I finally got there, the Country section was still a blank
page. Look for it on the site's left-hand navigation bar soon.

This was good enough to add to the front page, and I've made this change to
the "live" site as well as to the Beta site. Look on the left side for the
only place on my site where you'll see a picture of N'Sync -- on the Cover
of the Rolling Stone.

The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page
http://www.dixie-chicks.com/

** Time to plan ahead **

There have been so many Dixie Chicks notes that I haven't had time to
digest! Founding Chick Robin Lynn Macy has founded a new bluegrass group
called Big Twang, with an album due this summer. There are two new entries
in the CDnow Dixie Chicks discography, plus a Karaoke disc, that I need a
lot more info on.

One especially exciting development that happened while I was incommunicado
is the release of the first Dixie Chicks tribute CD! "Pickin' On The Dixie
Chicks", part of CMH Records' "Pickin' On" series, includes nine tracks
from the two Sony albums *plus* one track from each of the Chicks' indie
albums! I'll post much more information as soon as I have time...
meanwhile, you can visit CMH Records' web site for more information or to
buy this bluegrass instrumental tribute.
