Skelpin is pretty far from what I consider traditional Irish music
(Danu, Altan, Lunasa). They do use mostly traditional Irish tunes,
but the resemblance ends there. The tunes are usually played VERY
fast, with a unique mix of Spanish flamenco guitar backup and driving
percussion. Only Tim Foley plays in Irish traditional style - the
other melody players know the tunes but don't grok the style.
However, Tim Foley, Hector Maldonado, and David Maldonado are
excellent musicians, and they do put on a fun show. There's usually
some fun Flamenco-based music that showcases David's guitar playing
along with the Irish tunes. I saw Skelpin when they opened for Lunasa
and they certainly had their moments. Just don't go expecting Irish
trad...

Anybody heard of a local Irish music group called "Skelpin"? Are they
any good? I found out about a concert they are having at Old Town
Poway park on Aug 5th & am thinking about going. Sounds like
traditional Irish music.
Here's their web site. Concert info listed under their web site
under "gigs." $15 per ticket.

What instrument do you play? Please at least sit in for one set... :-)

HI Micheal, Thanks for the reply. I don't think I could keep up with the speed as I am an intermediate player. But I do want to drag my buddy down there and expose him to the "real stuff."
Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Michael anchors at the Auld Sod so he's
there most weeks. I've only
been playing seisiuns sporadically lately because I've gotten very busy
with school. We will be performing at the Field playing music for
the
dance show Sunday December 18 and Sunday January 15 from 5:00 to

That's probably the best chance to catch us both.

Hi Elaine,
What is your and Micheal's monthly schedule of when you play at the
Ouldsod and the Field? I'm trying to get my buddy talked into hitting
both places with me, and coordinate dates with him. Thanks.

Damn, it has sure been a while... I just realized today that it's been 12 months
since I last went out with a special lady, but I am pretty happy to be heading
out tonight. I've had a bit of trouble finding any decent women lately so I
joined up at this place about 2 weeks ago http://www.comeandseehere.info/nvgao .
So far been doing pretty well, just chatting to a few girls near me on thecam
and via the mail system on the place, but this is the first one I've lined up.
So anyway, wish me luck guys!
Hi Elaine,
Thanks for the response. Much appreciated.
Oh, my bad. I read on the Ouldsod previous posting a fellow said
"How is the slow session" in context of J. asking Michael about
the jam sessions at the Ouldsod pub. I assumed then there was a
slow session from that. (see exert below).
Yes, I tried the Blarneystone pub twice recently (July 5 & 12), and
they seemed like a nice collection of friendly folks, but they played
extremely fast and made it very clear that they are not going to consider
slowing down their playing at all for anyone.
I've been playing the recorder for 6 years, and occasionally play for a
local English country dance group, and am recently making the transition
over to tin whistle which has actually been surprisingly easy, so I'm
actually gotten several of the Irish songs in the Blarneysotone play book
up to a decent speed; but even on the songs I knew, I'm no where near the
neck breaking speed of the musicians at the B-pub.
I've downloaded the session book of the House of Ireland and checked out
their web site and times, but unfortunately I have time commitment
conflicts with Sunday mornings. (Such is life).
Thanks again for your response.
Best regards,
Cliff

Oh, a hint! :-) I'm sure I can give you
a lift, since I'll be driving up there anyway.
How slow is the slow session? I mean, is it bring mypipes slow?

Hi, Cliff
I think you might have the Auld Sod and the Blarney Stone confused.
The
Auld Sod has only one seisiun and it's an advanced, up-tempo seisiun on
Tuesday nights that starts around 7 and runs until whenever. The
tempos
there actually tend to be on the fast side, and we play a much wider
variety of tunes than are in the Blarney Stone tunebook.
The Blarney Stone in Kearney Mesa has an open seisiun Tuesday evenings,
and that's where I'd recommend you start out. Everyone sits at
tables
so it's possible to use sheet music and tunes are played at various
tempos depending on who is there. Hopefully someone else can let
you
know what time the Blarney Stone seisiun starts.
I'd also strongly recommend the House of Ireland music class on Sunday
mornings from 10:30 to 12:00 until you've gotten more comfortable on
whistle.

Hi,
I read from the other postings here that the Ouldsod pub has both slow
and fast sessions on Tuesday nights (7 to 10 PM). I was wondering if
the two sessions were at the same time, or maybe one was ran before the
other, or what. If so, what time is the slower session?
I'm learning the penny whistle, and Ive downloaded Michael's
Blarneystone pub session book from his web site.
Best regards,
Cliff
Happy Easter to you as well! I'm heading up to Long Beach to host the session there this afternoon. Woo hoo!

I really have no tapes to watch, I have a wolf tones cd here some
where. Basicly my little sister bought it for me a couple of years ago
and I would like to be able to play it at least a little next time she
comes out.

Hi I just joined the Group and was wondering if there is any one who
teaches Bodhran?
I know there are tape out there but I learn better in person.
I'm in Normal Heights near the sod but work nights.
Hope to hear from you soon
Owen
Thanks so much I will ck the site or if local the store you mentioned.
Yes, I have already done most of the research. I do want a drum that I can tune from the inside. My friend has a bodhran and does play it. I wanted to purchase a teaching tape, borrow hers and then fine tune (ha) my final choice.
Thanks for your help,
Lindielee

There are a number of music stores that stock beginner drums (Acoustic Expressions has a few and can order anything you like). You might want to pick up an instructional tape to review before you buy one. That way you can get a look at some of the features that you want (or want to avoid). Tuneable vs. nontuneable (and hardware for tuning is different for some drums - avoid the outside tuning ring - it gets in the way of playing).
Mel Mercier puts out a good beginners tape. I picked on up at Guitar Center years ago, but I think you can still get one online at http://www.homespuntapes.com

Hi.
I live in North County San Diego, not far from Temecula.
I'm interested in taking Bodhran lessons and looking for a place
that sells them with the tippers.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks

I guess it was a hint, that would be fantastic if I could grab a lift
with you...
The slow session was pretty slow, you probably would be just fine on
the pipes. I think the session next week is the usual faster session
run by Jack Gilder, but I can't say for sure because the schedule
isn't up yet on the web. I'll try and get in touch with Jack and find
out.
I'll be staying at the Mariott on 4th and Market, I believe the
session starts at the Plough on Tuesday night at 9 PM. Maybe we could
meet up a little earlier and grab a bite to eat.
Cheers,
Michael
