Baudboys are an all-male a capella group composed entirely of
Microsoft employees. Risking the wrath of fellow employees, they
rehearse in on-campus conference rooms, singing a variety of popular
and original music. The group's members are drawn from product teams
across the company, and as The Baudboys, they boast a wealth of
musical training and performing experience. They have performed to
audiences in a variety of venues, from nursing homes and schools to
major festivals and sporting events. True to their profession,
the "baud" part of their name refers to the method by which computer
modem speeds were once rated.

DISH formed in late 2004 with the intention of creating sassy,
original and musically excellent a cappella for the queer women's
community. They recruited potential singers through the magic of
Craigslist, and after a rigorous audition process found the seven
sparkling personalities they call DISH. Dirty, Delisha, Diva, Sugar,
Candy, Saucy and Deep DISH offer up some scrumptious a cappella.
Because traditional women's a cappella doesn't cater to the bottom
range, they write many of their own arrangements. Their self-titled
first album was released this year and they recently performed the
Star Spangled Banner for the Rat City Rollergirls bout. Watch for
DISH's special guest appearance with the Seattle Lesbian and Gay
Chorus June 10 and 11.

We're building/writing/creating our Christmas repertiore, which
includes the classics, new arrangements, and comedy (PDQ Bach is just
the beginning...)

Songs are all body-instrument, Bobby McFarin style; traditional
quartet experience is not required. This is inventive, creative, and
highly stylized singing, polished to performance grade. Think Cirque
Du Soliel in voices. Now mix in Christmas music and themes.

We'll book gigs, sing on the MAX, sing on the streets downtown, and
show up for the big Christmas Tree lighting in Pioneer Courthouse
Square. We also frequent private parties of friends.

We practice once a week through the summer, plus song-writing sessions
as we like, then twice a week in the fall, and start performing on the
day after Thankgiving.

So you think you can sing? Well, join a chorus

Everyone owns one musical instrument, and it travels around with you.

It's your voice.

It comes free of charge, and you're born knowing how to use it (just
ask the parents of any newborn). It is so distinctively yours that a
recording of it can be used as legal evidence, just like your fingerprint.

No wonder singing is the No. 1 form of arts participation according to
a 2003 Chorus America survey, which also found that an estimated 28.5
million Americans regularly performed in one of America's
approximately 250,000 choruses. Empirical evidence suggests those
numbers continue to rise.

Why do people love to sing? According to the veteran choral conductor
Weston Noble, it's because this is the only art form that unites two
important avenues of artistic communication: music and words.

"Choral music is literally life-changing," Noble said in an interview
last year. "When you add a text to use as a medium for the
interpretation of music, you go beyond the realm of language and into
the spirit."

Here, in the greater Seattle area, the wealth of choruses of all kinds
points to the fact that "this is a big choral town," according to the
Seattle Pro Musica's Karen P. Thomas. Thomas, whose highly successful
chorus recently became one of only seven nationwide to receive an
American masterpieces grant to host a major choral festival next June
(plus several outreach concerts and educational events). The festival
will bring in choirs from around the Northwest, plus such major
figures as Dale Warland and Morten Lauridsen.

"It's human nature to communicate verbally," says Thomas, who also
points to the egalitarian nature of singing: "It embraces everyone."

And choral singing fulfills a number of other roles. Choruses advance
social goals, such as the quest for peace and tolerance. Church and
other religious choirs express and further a religious mission. Ethnic
choirs are an important avenue of cultural transmission and
celebration. And all choirs expose their singers to other languages,
eras and cultures through their choice of music.

And you're never too old. The esteemed Seattle voice teacher Roberta
Manion, now living in a retirement community, leads an informal chorus
whose oldest member is 105: "The love of singing lasts a lifetime,"
Manion says.

Some choruses are full of highly skilled professional singers and
music teachers who must pass rigorous auditions; others accept anyone
who shows up and wants to sing, and many others fall somewhere in between.

Below, you'll find an adult-choral compilation that is fairly
inclusive (the huge array of children's choirs is another subject).
Many choruses require annual dues. The fall season is a good time to
join in.

Bellevue Chamber Chorus, an Eastside chorus of 30-40, is directed by
Fredrick Lokken; membership requires a 10-minute audition

Cantare Vocal Ensemble, an auditioned 40-member chorus, specializes in
performing lesser-known choral works along with popular repertoire.
Artistic director Mark Adrian is seeking sopranos and basses.

Cascadian Chorale, founded in 1964 and led by Philip Tschopp, is an
auditioned Eastside chorus with a chamber subgroup, the Cascadian

Choir of the Sound, a 100-voice chorus founded in 1977 and affiliated
with Shoreline Community College, is led by Judy Filibeck in
performances that often feature staging, lighting and choreography.

Choral Arts, a very select 30-voice professional choral ensemble
founded by Richard Sparks, is now auditioning top candidates for a new

Choral Sounds Northwest, an 80-voice chorus in Burien, performs with

City Cantabile Choir, founded in 1981 by artistic director Fred West,
is an auditioned chorus that performs music of many cultures and
styles, from jazz to African and Celtic works

The Esoterics, the award-winning 36-voice auditioned
professional-quality chorus devoted to new repertoire, is a "project"
chorus; not all members sing all 20 annual concerts. Eric Banks is the

Issaquah Chorale, founded in 1991, is a 50-member auditioned chorus
led by Linda Gingrich, has a season that includes annual visits to

Issaquah Singers, now in its 30th year, performs lighter repertoire;
the 30-50 voice chorus is led by Dorothy Hay, and no auditions are

Kirkland Choral Society, led by Glenn Gregg, is in its 18th season; 70
members make it the Eastside's largest chorus. To audition:

Lake Washington Singers, a 30-voice non-audition, secular women's
chorus, sings pop/classics and show tunes, with piano, bass and

Medieval Women's Choir, 60-voice non-auditioned chorus devoted to
medieval music, is directed by eminent scholar Margriet Tindemans;

including the Daylight Singers (for 55+, led by Adam Burdick), Women's

Northwest Chamber Chorus, led by Mark Kloepper in its 39th season, is

Northwest Chorale, a 60-voice North Seattle-based chorus with a
mission — to feed the poor — gives free concerts with donations

Northwest Repertory Singers, an auditioned five-year-old Tacoma

Norwegian Male Chorus of Seattle is one of several Norwegian choruses
in Everett, Tacoma and other sites around the country. The Seattle NMC

Opus 7, a professional 24-voice choral group founded in 1992 by Loren

Rain City Women's Chorus, a non-auditioned Wedgwood-area 24-year-old
choir promising "fun and friendship" as well as quality music, is led

Rainier Chorale, based in Kent with 75 voices, is a community chorus
with "low-key" auditions (tenors/basses especially needed); Ron Bayer

Hi, this might be a long shot but I am interested in performing ethnic
a cappella. I have heard some cool stuff done with two female voices
in the Celtic and Nordic traditions - harmonies that send tingles up
your spine. Need another female voice that can harmonize by ear to do
this. Also to do Appalachian spirituals, and mid-eastern flavor pieces
(I am in a dance troupe), possibly with some simple percussion
instruments thrown in. Obviously this is not barbershop style. If
anyone has any info please send it my way. Or maybe this is not the
group I should be asking. If so I apologize.

Grammy-nominated vocal acrobats (and certifiable nutjobs) THE BOBS
return to perform what has become a Seattle tradition - their AFTER
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SHOW at the Triple Door.  Celebrating their 25th
Anniversary of skewering the classics, breaking all the rules and
clear-cutting their own unique path in the world of vocal music, The
Bobs have brought their trademark wit and musical malfeasance to
venues ranging from Lincoln Center to Los Angeles' Universal
Amphitheater to Berlin's Passionkirche.  They recently appeared as
special guests in Judith Owen & Harry Shearer's Holiday Singalong at
the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.



Together since 1981, the original "band without instruments" has
released 13 albums and several concert DVDs including the recent
RHAPSODY IN BOB, which truly showcases The Bobs' trademark audacity in
vocal arranging.  The last cut, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" features
The Bobs as a Vocal Orchestra, accompanied by guest pianist Bob
Malone.  A documentary about the group, SIGN MY SNARLING MOVIE: 25
YEARS OF THE BOBS, is slated for release and festival appearances in 2007.



In Seattle, The Bobs will perform selections from their 1997 holiday
release, Too Many Santas (Rounder Records) as well as new material
from an upcoming CD.  Local musical guests will be sprinkled

Sweepstakes A Capella Festival being held in Olympia, Washington on Saturday,
March
10th, 2007, at the  Washington Center for the Performing Arts.

The 2006 NW winners, Tongue-Tied A Cappella (a terrific group!) will host and
present an
awesome set of tunes while the judges are deliberating.

The DEADLINE for applications to this year's event is soon (Feb. 2nd!!!!). Most
groups are
notoriously late in getting applications in. With the earlier than usual March
date, it is
imperative that we receive your applications as soon as possible. Don't miss out
on your
chance to win the NW Harmony Sweepstakes just because you forgot to apply!

The Dickens Carolers has been auditioning, training, costuming and
booking acappella, SATB Christmas caroling quartets since 1978. Every
year we hold auditions in early-mid August and rehearsals Sept thru
Nov, then you perform throughout the Puget Sound from Thanksgiving thru
Christmas. We generally have 40-50 singers making $25-35/hr.  Someone
in a full-time quartet makes ~$1750-2500 for the season.  Part-time
makes ~$750-1500.  You set your schedule and we'll do our best to fill
it with gigs.

For the 28th year, any Seattle singer of whatever caliber can join in
the Summer Sings, hosted by the Seattle Symphony Chorale.

For five consecutive Tuesday evenings at the Swedish Cultural Center,
for a nominal sum, you can join with your fellows to sing through one
of several big choral works, each session conducted by an area choral
conductor.

Next Tuesday, the second Summer Sing, it's Dvorak's "Stabat Mater,"
conducted by Anthony Spain, music director of the Northwest Symphony
Orchestra and the Bainbridge Chorale. (Spain and the Northwest
Symphony have just won their seventh ASCAP award, first place in their
category of orchestras with an annual budget under $470,000.)

Succeeding sessions will enjoy the Verdi "Requiem," July 31 under Paul
Schultz of the Northwest Repertory Singers; Haydn's "Lord Nelson"
Mass, Aug. 7 with Jerry Yonkman of the University of Puget Sound; and
Mendelssohn's "Elijah," Aug. 14 with James Savage of St. James Cathedral.

"It's a lot of fun," says Spain. "One of the best parts is for singers
to sing stuff new to them. With the Dvorak, they get to enjoy a
terrific piece which is making a comeback."

Choruses, he says, are always on the lookout for works beyond the
standards, and this year's offerings are deliberately a little outside
the norm, though none so unfamiliar they would be difficult to read.

"We performed the 'Stabat Mater' 18 months ago, and the orchestra and
chorus were just blown away," he says.

He feels it's a great challenge to conduct these performances. "We
have to be conductors at our best, to see how much we can accomplish
in one session, try to get inside the work on some level, be convinced
by it. The a cappella parts in the last 'Stabat Mater' chorus are
riveting."
