Here's a recent review of THE BOBS in concert from Albany's METROLAND magazine:

Sing the Season - The Bobs
Caffé Lena, Dec. 1, 2007

A cappella means "from the chapel," and often connotes a reverent approach to singing, even if the songs themselves are not. Barbershop quartets and other such groups often aspire to an aural blend in which the vowel sounds are perfectly matched among the singers, who also breathe in unison.

The Bobs, an instruments-free quartet who performed at Caffé Lena last Saturday, have no such blend. And there's no doubt, after the program they presented, that they'd be kicked out of the chapel. But their four very distinctive voices go together the way an orchestra blends, making a virtue out of the contrasting sounds.

Bass Richard Greene has a molasses quality to his voice: sweet but persistent, and he sings with a jazzy edge. Amy Engelhardt's voice can be brassy or gentle or even quasi-operatic, as in "Disappointment Pants," an original Bobs song about, as they put it, "an imaginary spaghetti western." She hits impressive high notes, while Dan Schumacher often cranks into a falsetto that goes higher still—when he's not backing a song with astonishing percussion effects. So it was only natural that he was given the lead vocal in Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "But I Was Cool," which has at the heart of its refrain a hip kind of keening.

Then there's Matthew Stull, a Bobs co-founder (with Greene) who has an excellent vocal presence when singing lead, yet switches easily into backup when needed. He was particularly effective in "The Tight Pants Tango," an ode to ringing-cellphone retrieval that's featured on the group's new CD, Get Your Monkey Off My Dog.

The Christmas program started brilliantly—literally, with "Fifty Kilowatt Tree," a Greene-penned celebration of decorative excess. Other holiday songs peppered the show, some of them—"Christmas in L.A.," "Yuleman vs. the Anti-Claus" among them—from their Too Many Santas CD. Awaiting recording are their rewrite of "Eight Days a Week," an unexpectedly hilarious tribute to the flaming hanukiah, and a not-for-the-uptight speculation about the Virgin Mary's reaction to an unexpected pregnancy ("How Did This Thing Get in Me?")

Between-the-songs banter can be a highlight of a Bobs show, and this one was no exception. There's usually some microphone choreography, as the singers reconfigure positions to accommodate the lead and backup requirements of the next number, along with a joke-laden introduction. What's charming is how much they amuse one another, which can even overtake the song itself, as when the intro to "Christmas in Jail" sent the group into such paroxysms that they had to restart twice.

The Bobs have crafted songs about bumper stickers ("Kill Your Television"), cats ("Fluffy's Master Plan for World Domination") and even farting ("Vapor Carioca"), and it's a treat to hear the catalogue grow. But it's also fun to revisit the covers that they've made their own, starting with one of their first-ever recordings, "Helter Skelter," enthusiastically re-created for the Caffé audience, and including a straightforward version of Kurt Weill's "Moon of Alabama," a madrigal styling, if you can believe it, of the Doors's "Light My Fire," and a high-spirited "White Room" with lead vocal by Schumacher, gentle refrains by Stull, and a holiday-themed voice-guitar solo by Engelhardt.

Sure, their stuff is virtuosic and funny and ingeniously arranged, but can they ever just settle down and sing? Sure: They gave us, as an encore, Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time Is Here," and it would have been the envy of the Hi-Lo's or the Persuasions.

Subject: Forming a new vocal band in Portland OR

Hey all,

After moving to Portland OR a year ago from Boston, I've become
convinced there is a need for a new vocal band!

I'm a long-time a cappella vet (age 33) who is a screaming
baritenor, songwriter, arranger, director, and decent VP. I
produced some fifty arrangements when I was in the Harvard
Veritones, directed a NY semi-pro group that placed in the Harmony
Sweeps, and founded and directed two other vocal bands that have
outlived my participation. I'm a serious and reasonably prolific
songwriter who is chronically working on the solo a cappella CD. I
have judged ICCA shows. I'm also a violinist, and I dabble in
guitar and piano.

I'm looking to start up a 6 or 7 person, part-time, co-ed vocal band
that rehearses every Sunday evening at my house in NE Portland, and
performs about once a month wherever and whenever we can. The aim
is to have fun, not expect to make money or hit it big with a
recording contract.

I'd like to start with the radio play pop sound but very soon add
some funk. Go to www.myspace.com/dtxboston for examples of what I'm
looking for. "Why Not Tomorrow" is a good example of my songwriting
style and the radio pop sound I mean; "Higher and Higher" is a cover
that scratches the surface of the funk side. I hope to quickly
establish the initial group sound from my personal library of
originals and arrangements (plus those of other band members) and go
from there. We'd all perform on individual mics. (I don't have
much in the way of equipment so there would be some group purchasing
involved.)

I'm looking for most voice parts: bass, VP who can solo from time to
time, one baritone or tenor, and 2-3 power altos (or a soprano who
can really belt). I'd like to assemble people who all have a great
ear, can blend on syllables ranging from pretty to ugly, have
serious soul, and really want to build a vocal band that might have
non-collegiate a cappella singers and isn't just an extension of
their college group. I'm seeking laid-back, friendly, intelligent
folks somewhere in the age range of 25-40. Arranging, songwriting,
and improv skills are also a nice-to-have, but not a must.

If you're interested, or know someone who is, please email me at
eric_chung@.... Thanks!

You've been waiting for it. I've been waiting for it. Here it is. A
chorus that shows up unannounced, at a moment's notice, wherever the
city urgently requires choral music. A street-renaming rally. A tram
wedding. A tree sit-in.

"Portland loves big public displays, big surprises and big voices,"
claims founder Stephen Marc Beaudoin, who says he can't think of
anything Portland needs more than a "crazed chorus ready to attack the
city on a moment's notice."

I can't, either.

The Portland Pick-up Choir (He should come up with a better name, like
Bill Crane did a few years ago with his Portland Musical Swat Team.
That's not quite it, but it's close.) debuts later this month "at an
event which may or may not be announced in advance to the public."

Beaudoin, a singer, writer (Willamette Week, CrossCut) and director
who blogs at From Every Corner, hastily assembled his first raucous
group for "Ten Tiny Dances" at PICA's TBA festival last September.
JustOut called the choir's appearance a "tear-inducing moment."

That could be good or bad; we'll assume good.

Anyway, the chorus has no fixed membership and is open to anyone who
wants to sing in public. It's very fluid, apparently, so if you want
to twist and shout, email Beaudoin at pickupchoir@...

Hi all,

Many of you have been aware of a "big announcement" coming from
Realtime. Here it is!

<drum roll....>

John Newell, our original lead singer, has retired. He told us in
mid-November that because of family pressures, he would not be able to
keep up with the performance schedule of an active champ quartet.
John and his wife Corinne have three kids under three, with twins
arriving last January, so life has been hectic! John will be missed.

The remaining three - Tim, Mark and I - debated for about 15 seconds
and then decided to ask Tim's dad, Doug Broersma, to become the new
lead of Realtime. Doug is a wonderful guy and a legend in the
Evergreen district, and he had filled-in for John a couple of times,
so he was an obvious choice, as well as a great choice.

This change has really re-energized the quartet, and we're working
hard, learning new music, taking new gigs, and having a great time.
Doug's debut performance with the quartet was this past weekend in
Seaside, Oregon, at the annual QCED (Evergreen Champs) convention.
We've got video posted on the Realtime site, and it's already been
viewed hundreds of times, in less than 12 hours. So take a look, and
get to know the phenomenon that is Doug.

Also on the video is a little slide show we put together to honor our
good friend John. I got a bit choked up making it, so if you're
emotionally inclined, you might want to have kleenex near by.

Here's the link: http://www.realtimequartet.com

So in a nutshell, thanks for your support these past five years, which
have been amazing, glorious and unforgettable. In spite of our lower
genetic diversity, we're looking forward to many more years, each one
better than the last!

In Harmony,
Tim, DOUG, Mark and Tom

Masterworks Choral Ensemble Presents Bringing Down the House:
Northwest Regional Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival

Olympia – 02/04/2008 – Great news for a cappella fans: Harmony Sweepstakes is
just
around the corner! Masterworks Choral Ensemble presents the 14th annual
Northwest
Regional Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival on March 8, 2008 at the
Washington
Center for the Performing Arts.

What's so exciting about Harmony Sweepstakes? Primarily, it's an enthusiastic
reception
for vocal groups from our region. It's also an unabashed celebration of this
amazing
instrument we call the human voice. And, it's a friendly competition that
results in the
winners going on to the national finals.

Here in the Northwest, come March, we're ready for diversions that shake and
stir. This is
precisely when things are heating up in the a cappella world. Across the U.S.
eight
regional competitions are held from March 8 to April 20. The same simple
ingredients go
into each one: vocal groups of three to eight members have 10 minutes each to
perform
their best unaccompanied vocal music before a live audience and a panel of
judges. Any
style of a cappella music is welcome in the mix.

This year's Northwest Harmony Sweepstakes features The Coats as host and guest
artist.
The Coats (formerly The Trenchcoats) won the regional and national championships
in
1994, and graciously returned once before to host the Northwest Harmony
Sweepstakes.
Based in Seattle, they are one of the region's best vocal bands and one of the
most in-
demand acts on the country's corporate and college circuits.

Radio personality Smilin' Jay of Mixx 96.1 KXXO returns with his own amazing
vocal range
to emcee this year's event. And, five of the six groups have appeared in the
Northwest
Harmony Sweepstakes before, including Olympia's own "boy band," The Akafellas.
Other
competitors include The Baudboys, Rezonate, A Toast of the Town, V-Chords, and
Vocalocity. Audience members will be entertained with a full range of a cappella
styles —
pop, rock, jazz, doo-wop, folk, country, gospel, R&B — and plenty of vocal
percussion.

With a cappella harmony bringing down the house, this is one night on the town
music
lovers won't want to miss. The show begins at 7:30 and the evening concludes
with an
"afterglow" in the lobby of the Washington Center, where concertgoers can sing
along with
performers.

Tickets are available at the Washington Center Box Office, 512 Washington Street
SE,
Olympia, or by calling 360-753-8586. Information about Harmony Sweepstakes is
available online at www.harmony-sweepstakes.com. Information about Masterworks

Invite you to join us for a 7 day workshop at ESALEN IN BIG SUR, CA:
(Come out to California this Summer for a truly magical singing
experience...)

Sunday, June 29th through Sunday, July 6th, 2008

"SOul*VOice* SOng - Your Voice to the Next Level"… This workshop
will
go from learning the basic elements of vocal improvisational sound
to
singing in front of a full a cappella rhythm section; creating the
beginning sounds of a complete drum kit vocally to being part of a
rhythm section as a competent vocal percussionist. You will vocally
explore drumming instruments, rudiments and patterns indigenous to
Western and European music and polyrhythms from around the world.
This exploration will help singers become comfortable with various
meters by understanding the contrapuntal relationships that
make up these various rhythms, it will also help strengthen phrasing
and a sense of song form, emphasizing singing inside the time, a
feel
invaluablein performance and improvisation.

Workshop Leaders take seminarians through an overview of
improvisation as it pertains to negotiating chord changes as well as
exploring intervallic scale-based soloing over one chord vamps,
basic
blues and the chord progressions of popular songs.
We'll also explore the exciting ancient art form of CircleSinging
that is created in a sacred space allowing creativity to arise and
fears to melt away… Finally, we dive into the possibilities of using
basic sound technology to morph and experiment with vocal sounds,
digitally capturing our favorite moments to tape to keep forever.
Experience the voice and all it's possibilities! Sing for your Life!
And all its giving energy = FUN, FUN, FUN!

Entertainment legend XRP—an a cappella group composed of four former
Rockapella members—announced it would make its first major appearance
in 20 years on August 23 at A Cappellastock in Ogden, UT. A
Cappellastock, celebrating its fifth anniversary, is the world's
premier, one-night a cappella music event.

XRP's members, considered by many to be the kings of contemporary a
cappella music, have released award-winning albums and performed
concerts around the world, and were featured by Spike Lee in a highly
acclaimed documentary on a cappella music. Rockapella is remembered
for their work for Folgers, Almond Joy and the hit program Where In
The World Is Carmen San Diego. This is XRP's last scheduled
performance together.

"We're excited about performing together again. This quartet was
my 'dream team'—a group that started a movement of awareness and
appreciation for a cappella music that is still growing, and A
Cappellastock is the proof of that. We may never sing together again,
but it's gonna be one heckuva show!" said Barry Carl, XRP bassist,
who emceed A Cappellastock 2007 and was recently recognized by the
Contemporary A Cappella Society of America as the "the most
influential bass singer of the last 30 years."

"We can't wait to hit that stage. A Cappellastock does it right.
This is a major league rock show with all the trimmings, and it's the
biggest and best a cappella concert this side of the Rockies," Carl
said. "Purely vocal music appeals to all ages. It's inspirational and
deeply powerful—it just goes straight to the heart. It lifts you up
instead of beating you down. Like the A Capellastock ad says, who
needs guitars?"

In addition to XRP, A Cappellastock'08 will offer fans the
opportunity to experience the vocal stylings of T Minus 5, Hi-
Fidelity, Tonic Sol Fa and the Saltaires. These groups, leaders in
the a cappella community, will come together for one night only to
provide a true vocal adventure—and a good time for music lovers of
all ages.

"Because of what we've created with A Cappellastock—the quality, the
reputation—we've attracted one of the greatest reunions of all time,"
said Jeff Peterson from T Minus 5, the conceptual and inspirational
force behind A Cappellastock. "XRP's involvement has created buzz,
excitement and a lot of electricity, even inspiring people from Japan
to come to Utah for the show."

More than 4,000 people—XRP fans, a cappella enthusiasts and
entertainment lovers—will attend this year's event. Tickets have
already been sold in Japan and nearly 10 states.

Tickets for the show start at $10 and are available at
www.acappellastock.com or by calling 801-452-1481. For the second
year, the concert also features a VIP ticket, which includes premium
seating, dinner on Historic 25th Street in downtown Ogden, a private
meet-and-greet with the artists and complimentary concessions.

A Cappellastock will be held at the Ogden Amphitheater, an outdoor
venue located in the Historic Municipal Gardens on the corner of 25th
Street and Washington Boulevard in Ogden, UT. In case of inclement
weather, the event will be held at Ogden High School.

ABOUT A CAPPELLASTOCK
Now in its fifth year, A Cappellastock is the world's premier one-
night a cappella adventure, and magically presents the power of the
human voice. Each year, A Cappellastock draws award-winning a
cappella artists and music fans from around the globe.

A Cappellastock--Get Your Tickets Now!

Get ready for A Cappellastock, August 23rd, 8pm at the Ogden Amphitheater! We are more excited than ever as we are setting records with ticket sales. If you were one of the many who wondered how A Cappellastock could get any better after last year's show, hold on tight because we promise you another A Cappellastock experience that will knock your socks off!

Thanks to all of you, A Cappellastock has become the largest one-night concert of its kind. Now celebrating the fifth year, it has also become Ogden's largest outdoor concert of the year and is starting to draw many from out of state. Former bass of Rockapella Barry Carl said, "A Cappellastock does it right. This is a major league rock show with all the trimmings."

Lineup of groups for A Cappellastock include:

XRP  represents the former members of Rockapella. They kicked off the hit TV game show Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and started the contemporary a cappella movement. The group has not performed together since 1991, but has decided to come together once more just for A Cappellastock.

Hi-Fidelity is one of the best musical comedy acts in the nation. Their tribute to the original Star Trek Show has won them appearances on X Box Commercials as well as the Last Call with Carson Daily as the joke explainers.

Tonic Sol Fa has sold more than one million CD's, appeared on a Christmas special with PBS, with Jay Leno and many other television personalities.

T Minus 5 is Ogden's own home-grown a cappella group and continue to perform throughout the West. We can't wait to play host again this year and share with you some truly amazing entertainment.

The Saltaires have been ranked in the top ten barbershop choruses internationally five times and were named by official declaration "The Cultural Ambassadors of the State of Utah" by Governor Michael O. Leavitt.  We are lucky to have them as our pre-show entertainment.

Local entertainer Jared Allen will make his solo debut on September 20 at 7:30 pm at the Ogden City Amphitheater. For eight years Allen has been the driving force--the front man--for nationally-acclaimed vocal band T Minus 5. He is also the co-creator and co-producer of A Cappellastock, the West's premier a cappella event.

A long-overdue event, Allen's solo debut represents a showcase for his passion: music and performing. He has performed widely throughout the Western and Midwestern US with the likes of Grammy award winner Christopher Cross, Entertainer of the year Neal McCoy, LA Music Award Winner Carly Goodwin, and many more. While classically-trained, he can wail the latest pop hits or bring you to tears with a flawless Italian aria. He can deliver spot-on musical humor—having you in stitches one minute—yet turn around and create a sense of peace through a smooth ballad. Whatever the musical genre, he works tirelessly to provide crowds of all sizes with high-energy and high-quality entertainment.

He jokingly refers to himself as a "hack", but hires the best musicians around (his accompanist Zoltan Vegvari, the acclaimed Hungarian jazz pianist). He backs-up his on-stage experience with a degree in musical/ethnic geography. "Doing a solo show gives me a chance to share both my musical flexibility and my love of performing," Allen explains, "I get to entertain with music that truly speaks to my soul…and stuff the audience will thoroughly enjoy too."

For tickets and more information about Jared Allen's debut solo show on September 20th 7:30 pm at the Ogden Amphitheater, see www.jaredallenentertainment.com or call 801-725-4235.

The event is sponsored by Downtown Ogden Inc. and the Ogden Amphitheater.

New a cappella vocal band forming in Portland!

We are two long-time a cappella vets from various groups across the
country:

--Eric Chung, tenor/VP, award-winning a cappella songwriter and
prolific arranger who founded the well-known Boston vocal band
Downtown Crossing and directed the NY Sweeps runner-up Stay Tuned
--Mike Mendyke, former bass from the renowned Boston-based band Five
O'Clock Shadow, and current bass for Dick Van Dyke and the Vantastix

We are looking to form a five- or six-person vocal band with focus on
high-energy covers (primarily from the late 90's), a few originals by
Eric, and new originals written improv-style by the group. We are
seeking a (1) baritone/tenor/VP plus (2) 2-3 women of any part, with
the usual features: great ear, knack for blend and harmony, sight
reading, good-nature, ability to improvise/jam a little, and a wicked
sense of humor. Even better if you can arrange and/or write music,
as well as have some prior a cappella experience of some kind.
Rehearsals will be once a week, on Sunday nights, and primarily at
Eric's lovely home in NE Portland on Sunday nights.

First round auditions will be held in the afternoons the weekend of
Nov 15-16 and in the afternoon on Saturday, November 22 in NE
Portland, with a group second round the in the afternoon of Sunday,
November 23. For the first round, we'll have you come for half an
hour singing the verse and chorus of a song of your choice plus doing
some jamming with us.

Interested? Hope so! Please email eric_chung@... with a brief
description of your background to schedule an audition. Thanks!

any further: The Bobs are amazing. They have won over
a grizzled folkie who thinks tunes are incomplete without a guitar solo
