Subject: Jared Allen to Perform at Ogden Amphitheater!
jaredfredallen
Send Email Send Email

Local entertainer Jared Allen will make his solo debut on September 20 at 7:30 pm at the Ogden City Amphitheater. For eight years Allen has been the driving force--the front man--for nationally-acclaimed vocal band T Minus 5. He is also the co-creator and co-producer of A Cappellastock, the West's premier a cappella event.

A long-overdue event, Allen's solo debut represents a showcase for his passion: music and performing. He has performed widely throughout the Western and Midwestern US with the likes of Grammy award winner Christopher Cross, Entertainer of the year Neal McCoy, LA Music Award Winner Carly Goodwin, and many more. While classically-trained, he can wail the latest pop hits or bring you to tears with a flawless Italian aria. He can deliver spot-on musical humor—having you in stitches one minute—yet turn around and create a sense of peace through a smooth ballad. Whatever the musical genre, he works tirelessly to provide crowds of all sizes with high-energy and high-quality entertainment.

He jokingly refers to himself as a "hack", but hires the best musicians around (his accompanist Zoltan Vegvari, the acclaimed Hungarian jazz pianist). He backs-up his on-stage experience with a degree in musical/ethnic geography. "Doing a solo show gives me a chance to share both my musical flexibility and my love of performing," Allen explains, "I get to entertain with music that truly speaks to my soul…and stuff the audience will thoroughly enjoy too."

For tickets and more information about Jared Allen's debut solo show on September 20th 7:30 pm at the Ogden Amphitheater, see www.jaredallenentertainment.com or call 801-725-4235.

The event is sponsored by Downtown Ogden Inc. and the Ogden Amphitheater.

New a cappella vocal band forming in Portland!

We are two long-time a cappella vets from various groups across the
country:

--Eric Chung, tenor/VP, award-winning a cappella songwriter and
prolific arranger who founded the well-known Boston vocal band
Downtown Crossing and directed the NY Sweeps runner-up Stay Tuned
--Mike Mendyke, former bass from the renowned Boston-based band Five
O'Clock Shadow, and current bass for Dick Van Dyke and the Vantastix

We are looking to form a five- or six-person vocal band with focus on
high-energy covers (primarily from the late 90's), a few originals by
Eric, and new originals written improv-style by the group. We are
seeking a (1) baritone/tenor/VP plus (2) 2-3 women of any part, with
the usual features: great ear, knack for blend and harmony, sight
reading, good-nature, ability to improvise/jam a little, and a wicked
sense of humor. Even better if you can arrange and/or write music,
as well as have some prior a cappella experience of some kind.
Rehearsals will be once a week, on Sunday nights, and primarily at
Eric's lovely home in NE Portland on Sunday nights.

First round auditions will be held in the afternoons the weekend of
Nov 15-16 and in the afternoon on Saturday, November 22 in NE
Portland, with a group second round the in the afternoon of Sunday,
November 23. For the first round, we'll have you come for half an
hour singing the verse and chorus of a song of your choice plus doing
some jamming with us.

Interested? Hope so! Please email eric_chung@... with a brief
description of your background to schedule an audition. Thanks!

2008 MEDIA RAVES FOR THE BOBS

"Let's just get this out of the way right away before this review goes
any further: The Bobs are amazing. They have won over
a grizzled folkie who thinks tunes are incomplete without a guitar solo
or two...The songs themselves are well-arranged, joyful, and in most
cases, hysterical...It's hard to be funny without being corny, and hard to be intelligent
without being overly clever and trite. The Bobs succeed on these
fronts...rewarding ear-candy of the best kind."

Seattle's Elegant Catastrophe Singers seek a singer, male or female, to join our alternative/electronic-influenced vocal band. We're a collaborative, boundary-pushing vocal group that writes original music and reinterprets existing material to make it our own.

We've had a variety of small and opening gigs and are pushing towards our first solo headlining show in Seattle. We're extremely collaborative and focus on the process of creation as well as having a blast singing together twice a week.

If you have demos or other recordings you want us to listen to, send us a link or mp3s with your audition email. Pluses include: previous a cappella or other organized singing experience; experience in vocal arranging, songwriting experience, and vocal percussion/ beatbox skills.

Auditions will be held by appointment â€" please contact Ariel Glassman at elegantcatastrophe@... to set up a time.

"Hearts Full of Spring"
Northwest Sound and The Coats!  May 30th - 2:00 and 7:00pm!
Tickets are now on sale for the spring/summer show "Hearts Full of Spring". Featuring the award winning Northwest Sound Men's Chorus with special guest group The Coats!

The Coats vocal band started on the street corners of Seattle, Washington's famous Pike Place Market. Singing for tourists, locals, fish vendors, and fellow buskers, their humble ambitions of earning a few clams to fight off the tuition bills quickly evolved into a full-time international performance career. They've since won national vocal competitions, sang for the President of the United States, and have been fortunate enough to share the stage with such talented fellow entertainers as Ronnie Milsap, Trisha Yearwood, Montgomery Gentry, The Beach Boys, Tanya Tucker, Billy Dean, Crystal Gayle, and Colin Ray, just to name a few, all while continuing their tradition of outreach performances and workshops supporting music in schools throughout the northwest.

The show will also include FastTrack and FrontLine - two of the best quartets in the Northwest!

The show venue is the fabulous IKEA Performing Arts Center in Renton, with lots of available parking and restaurants in the area.

Show Times: May 30th, 2:00pm and 7:00pm
Ticket Prices: Adult $22, Senior $18, Child $10

For those in the Northwest you may have heard the Match 4's on the radio promoting the Washington Lottery.  Of course if you're a true Northwest a cappella fan you already knew the Match 4's are The Coats.

Check out the Washington Lottery website for some fun tunes and video.   Be sure to click on "The Magic" link.

Hi everyone,

For those of you who were around back in 2000 or so, you may remember an a cappella group called Canvas.  We did open mics, and hosted a series of annual WA A Cappella Showcases.  At one of those shows, we performed The Simpsons theme song, and a clip of that performance has been available on YouTube for some time now:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM-_hz2LLZk

Assuming there are no last-minute glitches, this clip of Canvas will be appearing during the end credits of this week's SIMPSONS episode!!!  Sunday, 4/26 at 8:00pm on FOX.

Crazy that what we joked about back then is *finally* coming to pass!  Just thought you folks might like to be in on a local group's national television debut.  Only 8 years or so after we became defunct. ;)   Check it out if you can!!

Dave
[former (and future? haha) Canvas member]

The tradition of Norwegian male choral singing continues this summer with the
100th Sangerfest of the PCNSA. The first Sangerfest was held in Everett, WA in
1903 and celebrated the musical heritage of Norwegian, Scandinavian, and
American male chorus singing which was at it's height in the early 1900's.

The Norsemen mens' chorus of Sonja Lodge will host this year's Sangerfest which
will be highlighted by a Grand Concert which is open to the public.

The twelve member choruses of the PCNSA will be in attendance as well as a guest
chorus: The Hauka Mannskor from Soknedal, Norway. 130 or so singers are
expected.

Tickets for the Grand Concert are $20/each. The Grand Concert will be held June
26th, 2009 at 7:30 in the Hilton Convention Center in Eugene, OR. For ticket
information contact centennialsangefest@... or (541)510-8393.

If the phrase "male a cappella group" conjures up an image of students in blue
blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses...
think again. If, on the other hand, it conjures up campy college ensembles
singing joke versions of "Like A Virgin" in boxer shorts... think again.
Straight No Chaser are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are
they vaudeville-style kitsch. As original member Randy Stine comments, "We take
the music very seriously; we just don't take ourselves too seriously." In the
process, they are reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop
landscape. Originally formed a dozen years ago while students together at
Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon -
with a huge fanbase, millions of viewers on YouTube... and a contract with
Atlantic Records. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital
processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal – the
captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make
extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a
sense of humor.

They'll be at the Aladdin Theater in Portland Tuesday. For more details see
their website or the Aladdin website below.
