A reissue of a 1976 album that included (here's the rub) Ralph Towner, John
Abercrombie and Marc Copland (not to mention the leader's soaring arco
bass), Terry Plumeri's Water Garden is, imo, an overlooked classic. Review

Don't know if this will come through, but here is the seating chart for Lyle's

Book on hometown hero Pat Metheny does it right
By JOE KLOPUS
The Kansas City Star
There’s a steady stream of books about jazz artists who have left this world.
Every
few months it seems there’s another tome on Miles or Trane or Louis or
Mingus, and the scholars have surprised us in recent years with fine
books on far lesser-known artists such as sax men Gigi Gryce and Warne
Marsh and trumpeters Tommy Ladnier and Fats Navarro.
But we get few books about the living jazz artists.
Maybe
writers are afraid of getting sued. Maybe we’re waiting for the artists
to write their own books. Or most likely, the publishers are afraid
there isn’t a market.
Fortunately, a hometown hero who has
found a market for his music around the world has inspired a good new
book. It’s “The Pat Metheny Interviews” by Richard Niles, just out from
Hal Leonard ($19.99). It isn’t hefty — 161 pages, with quite a bit of
white space — and it won’t take more than a couple of hours of reading
time. But it does its job well and presents a great deal of information
about the guitarist and how his mind works.
Metheny is simply
one of the best talkers in music — I mean that in the best possible way
— and a generous interviewee. Niles writes, “Pat Metheny answers
questions in a manner so articulate that people who don’t know him well
often look around to see if he’s using autocue!” So with the right
person asking him the questions, a book about the guitarist could just
about write itself.
Niles has known Metheny since the
mid-1970s, and he knows what questions to ask. The responses he gets
are smart, funny and revealing. The book is much like spending a couple
of hours in conversation with the guitarist, exactly as it should be.
And there are some gems along the way, such as this one: “I just try to
play for the listener inside me.” Or: “My feeling is, you have to have
an incredibly accurate compass that lives inside of you, telling you
what you should be doing. … That’s the key right there, to follow that
compass.”
Niles has gained access to some historic photographs,
such as a teenage Metheny performing with Gary Sivils at the Ramada Inn
in 1971. He has talked to trumpeter Mike Metheny, Pat’s brother, and to
some Metheny colleagues including Lyle Mays and Gary Burton. He has
done pretty much everything right.
People will still be
learning from Metheny’s music for many more decades. And they can learn
a lot about why it matters from this book.

Didn't make it past the moderator. ha They've posted just a regular pic
themselves and say to order it through the PM site.
Do they have something against Amazon??
Now I remember why I don't like that place. Guess Pat's belief in no censorship
doesn't apply there.

Yeah, what about the toy alligator :)? Wonderful-looking room, likely in the
'hood in Woodstock? Like the cover a lot. Fits in well with the 'concept': by
searching all the venues you notice many are antique restoration theatres
perhaps on purpose. Liz

A double-disc reissue of almost all the material from German trumpeter's
three JAPO discs, Resonance will appeal to fans of Eberhard Weber's Colours
group that don't mind the music getting a little freer at times. Longtime
Bruninghaus keyboardist Rainer Bruninghaus is even on part of the disc,
elswhere it's Jasper van't Hof. The mix of trumpet, bass clarinet,
keyboards, bass and drums was quite unique for the time. Review here:

It's King Crimson day at AAJ, as reviews of the first three lush 40th
Anniversary Series titles are up today. Double discs (at least), with surround
remixes on DVD-A, as well as bonus features including some live video footage
and more, these are fantastic reissues, all remixed by Porcupine Tree's Steven
Wilson. Sorry for the intrusion here, but I know there are Crimheads amongst us!

One thing I find annoying is... say you have two people going to the
show. You can't order one premium ticket (with CD) and one reserved
ticket, and get seats together.
If you want to sit together, you have to be two premium tickets ($110
ea) or two reserved tickets ($55 ea). At least at the venue I want to
go to.
M
I remember the days when Pat would perform regualarly in the Northampton, MA
area. Unfortunately he doesn't any longer :(

'It was really great. Pat's enthusiasm is infectious, but in any case, being
in that room, surrounded by instruments playing themselves, made me feel
childishly excited. It's a fascinating project and I can't wait to write
about it.'

A DEMONSTRATION!! this week in NYC?!?! Why can't I be rich and take off for
NYC
at the drop of a hat?!
And I wonder if it was just an oversite that Paul Wertico wasn't mentioned
in his list of drummers
who've played with Pat? Paul was certainly MY favorite.

Pat Metheny Recording with Musical Robots
By Lee Mergner
As
one of the most popular, creative and prolific jazz musicians of his
generation, Pat Metheny has never rested on his laurels. He’s tasted
incredible commercial success with his group, yet also experimented
with all sorts of creative explorations – from Song X with Ornette Coleman
to the aptly titled Zero Tolerance for Silence.
And, over the course of his 30+ years as a recording artist and
performer, Metheny has played with a wide range of his peers and
mentors. And now, inspired both by his own explorations with technology
and the player-piano of his childhood, he’s about to play with some
machines.
Nonesuch Records, his current label, has announced that Metheny’s
next recording will be the Orchestrion project, which entails the
guitarist working solo with what might best be described as musical
robots. Actually, we don’t really know how to describe it, so we’ll let
him do it. Here is an excerpt of what Metheny wrote on his web site:
"In the late 1800's and early 1900's, as player pianos emerged
(pianos played mechanically by moving rolls of paper through a
mechanism that physically moved the keys), the next logical step was to
apply that same principle to a range of orchestral instruments, often
including percussion and mallet instruments. These large instrument
arrays were called Orchestrions.
"For a number of years now, I have been gathering the forces of a
group of talented and innovative inventors and technicians from around
the country to construct a large palette of acoustic sound-producing
devices that I can organize as a new kind of Orchestrion. The principle
instruments have been designed and built for me by the incredibly
talented Eric Singer, who is a major innovator in this area of
engineering. A small number of musicians have been doing things like
this in recent years as the mechanics of it all has evolved. And
naturally, in many ways, it has been as much about the technology as
the musical result. My only goal here, however, is a musical one.”
He added this candid postscript: "I have realized by now that as
much as I can describe this project, even the people closest to me have
had no idea what I was talking about until they have actually heard the
music and had an encounter with it all in action. So, even having
written all of the above, I know for sure that you still have to
experience it yourself to really know what it is."
His label’s communication about the project may be a bit more
illuminating (or not), as they try to explain the methodology of these
musical robots. "Each solenoid is fixed to a part of an instrument
(guitar, bass, drums, marimba and so many others) to create music from
Metheny's own hand/guitar/ feet via his computer/software that is
altogether sensitive and musical, like nothing we've seen or heard. The
instruments make music that could not possibly be made a single person
(i.e. cymbals can be played by three different mallets simultaneously;
custom fit bottle organ playing at break-neck speed). This must be seen
to fully understand but you probably get the picture.” We’re trying,
we’re really trying.
We really loved what he did with living musicians, so we have to
assume that Metheny knows good music when he hears it. Heck, the list
of his drummers alone tells you that the robots have some tough acts to
follow: Bob Moses, Danny Gottlieb, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette, Bill
Stewart, Billy Higgins and Antonio Sanchez. We assigned David R. Adler
to check out a demonstration by Metheny this week in NYC. But we can
all hear for ourselves in January when the recording comes out on
Nonesuch and we can see for ourselves when he tours the project early
in the coming year.
For Metheny’s own eloquent statement about the genesis of this project, you
can visit his web site.

What strikes me as odd is that amongst the "Pat" drummers listed
Paul Wertico was missing, what the heck is up with THAT??!! Talk
about being marginalized. OK, back to your regularly scheduled topic.

Figures! (I'm getting the feeling he hates
Americans ;-) LOL, Well Pat's not getting
anywhere near us this time so the prices are
unfortunately a moot point.
Paula
ticket price in Chalons-en-Champagne in France was 22 ($33) ;-)

> I just went online to get pre-sale tickets to the Portland, OR show and
was a tad put off by the price: $73.50 after the convenience charge. Do we
anticipate that the tickets will be the same price when they go on sale to
the general public?
