I went up to Detroit for the show on Saturday,
and it was FANTASTIC. They played at the Fox
Theatre, which is an old Radio City Music Hall
style hall, the kind of place they don't build
anymore.
The show was fantastic, lasted about 2 and a half
hours. Pat did a great version of Into The Dream
which segued into Are You Going With Me. When Pat
strummed the last chord of ITD, the rest of the
band came in, and instead of swapping to his
Roland guitar, he stayed on the Pikasso for at
least a minute or two, just strumming chords on
the harp strings while the band played the AYGWM
groove behind him. Finally he got up, and grabbed
the Roland guitar and the dropped into the second
song properly.
He also opened with This Is Not America, played
on solo baritone acoustic (sounded like he was
playing along to the percussion track that opens
The Way Up). Eventually, the rest of the band
walked onstage, all playing percussion of various
sorts (I think they were all playing percussion,
some jackass picked that particular moment to get
to his seat, and my view of the band was
obstructed as they came on, Antonio was the only
one I really had a good view of, and he was
clearly carrying and playing a glockenspiel).
Anyway, the band comes on and they segue right
into The Way Up, which they played in it's
entirety.
After it was through, the audience gave the band
a wild ovation. Pat looked kinda funny, he put
down whichever guitar he used at the end of TWU
and just sort of stood there, walking around in
his little area of the stage, like he wasn't sure
what to do, whilst waiting for us to calm down.
Eventually, Pat introduced the band, then said
that "Usually, at this point in the show, I say
something like 'That was a tune from our new
album', but in this case, that WAS the new
album!". He then quipped that after playing The
Way Up, there's a part of him that likes to say
"GOODNIGHT!". This of course met with disapproval
from the audience, so Pat said "You want to hear
a few more, huh?" and the show went on from
there.
One thing that surprised me was they didn't do
Phase Dance. I had the understanding they ALWAYS
did Phase Dance. Is this a new decision, to not
do it (perhaps retiring it?) or has Pat
occasionally dropped it from the set in the past?
