Pat is the consummate musician, always moving forward, always searching for
and finding new means of expression. Those of us who have been listening to
Pat Metheny since the early ECM days recognize and appreciate his continual
growth as a musician. One of the things I love about PM is his penchant for
exploration and his willingness to embrace new frontiers. When "Song X" was
released, I thought my PM listening days were over. I absolutely abhorred
that album. However, the very next PMG album, "Still Life (Talking)" remains
one of my very favorites even today. Go back and listen to "First Circle"
and "Falcon and the Snowman" (released prior to "Song X") and compare with
"Still Life (Talking)". The difference should be immediately apparent. Pat's
encounter with Ornette Coleman, very much a 180 degree departure from what
his fans were used to, catipulted his playing, writing and overall
musicianship to a brand new level. I have found this to be true every time
Pat embraced something new (like the baritone guitar).
We all have our favorite albums as well as those we don't really care for.
However, I encourage you to learn to listen a little differently. Although
each project is an entity in and of itself, listening with the understanding
that each project is still a single step in a long journey will greatly
enhance your enjoyment. And, if you're like me, you'll eventually have a
greater appreciation for those projects that seem less palatable.
And that's my two cents worth.

OK, I have heard it maybe few times, but this is my first impression. Maybe
I was expecting too much.
I'll give you my second opinion after some more listening to it.
In the mean time I appreciate your comments!
