Paul Collins' Beat band bio:

Paul Collins' Beat have been making music for more than 30 years and
are often called "The Godfathers Of Power Pop." Power Pop is a form
of punk rock that combines rythm and blues and 60s rock sounds such
as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Byrds with the raw energy
of notable punk and garage rock acts such as MC5 and Iggy Pop & The
Stooges.

With encouragement from his longtime friend Dee Dee Ramone of The
Ramones, lead singer Paul Collins re-formed Paul Collins' Beat
during the 1990s. This year, Paul Collins' Beat have released the
all-new studio album entitled "Ribbon Of Gold," as a follow-up to
the 2007 critically acclaimed album "Flying High." In addition, Paul
Collins' Beat have released an all-new live album entitled "Live In
Europe," currently available as a FREE mp3 download full album CD on
the band's website. The new live CD can be downloaded directly from
the Paul Collins Beat website as high quality mp3s without any
signups.

Paul Collins' Beat have toured the world, playing with acts such as
The Cure, The Jam (with Paul Weller), The Police (with Sting), Devo,
Huey Lewis & The News, Joe Jackson and Eddie Money amongst many
others.

Paul Collins' Beat originally formed in 1977 and appeared on the
Caddyshack motion picture soundtrack. The Beat changed their name to
Paul Collins' Beat to avoid confusion when a British Ska Band (The
English Beat) were at one point using the same moniker. Paul Collins
and The Beat have released 10 albums worldwide and continue to tour
the continents, concentrating primarily on USA, Europe, Brazil,
Canada, Japan and Mexico.

Paul Collins was a founding member of The Nerves, a legendary
underground rock group from 1974-77. Forming the same year as The
Ramones and Blondie, The Nerves were a 3-piece band featuring the
talents of Jack Lee, Peter Case (The Plimsouls) and Paul Collins
(The Beat). Aside from touring with The Ramones, The Nerves funded
their own recordings without a record deal. The Nerves originally
recorded the song Hanging On The Telephone, which was leter covered
by Deborah Harry and Blondie on the chart topping "Parallel Lines"
album.

Paul Collins was an important figure on the Los Angeles power pop
scene. In 1979, The Paul Collins' Beat penned an album which is still
considered by many as the best disc of power-pop ever. In
2005 "Flyin' High" Paul Collins' eleventh album since The Paul
Collins' Beat features twelve all-new songs.

Paul Collins was born in New York. At teenage age he has taken a
great interest in music and since then many years he sincerely loves
his life-work which has devoted his life.

We know, that many our readers who will find this interview, will
want to learn more about Paul Collins and necessarily visit his site.
And the most inquisitive will find a lot of interesting in web search
systems.

Fans of The Ramones learn that till last days lives of Dee Dee Ramone
Paul was his close friend. Looking through pages various web-editions
everyone will find a lot of interesting information and get close
acquainted with the talented musician who has devoted his songs
creativity!

Powerpop.Ru: Thanks, Paul, that agreed to communicate with us. Tell
to our readers a little about Paul Collins from Paul Collins's eyes
view. What better qualities did young Paul Collins had? What
qualities would have in future?

Paul Collins is a guy who started out with a dream when he was 17
years old. He wanted to be in a rock n roll band that became
superstars, just like the groups he admired the most, The Beatles and
The Rolling Stones, real bands that had great songs and great
musicianship. He got very lucky when he met Jack Lee and Peter Case
in 1974 in San Francisco. Here was a band that had great songs and
great musicianship. Paul thought for sure that this band was going to
conquer the world; he had no doubt in his mind about that. Paul was
sure that all that was needed was time, hard work, belief and
dedication and all would be good. Paul learned the hard way that
sometimes that is not enough. Paul spent many years confused about
why things happened the way they did, but he did not stop on his
quest to scale the heights of rock n roll fame. His second group, The
Beat, looked even more likely to take Paul to where he wanted to go…
but it didn't….still Paul held on to his dreams. In the future Paul
would have to start looking at things differently if he wanted to
survive, and he did. He learned that the more important thing is
love, love of life and love of music, that's when Paul came back
after a long absence and made a record filled with love and the
people liked it!

Powerpop.Ru: I heard that in Spain a lot of good power-pop groups. Is
it the truth?

Paul Collins: I don't think there has ever been a lot of any good
groups at one time in any one place, I do believe that power pop is
coming back, all over the place, and that is great. But as it was
when I was starting out, a long time ago, some are good and some are
not. But it seems that these days there are more and more good rockin
young bands and that is a good thing.

Powerpop.Ru: Is Paul Collins the friend of youth? Do you take part of
musical life in Spain (in the organization of musical festivals and
so on)? Do you help young talents? Or as many creative people with
the years you more like loneliness and a creative solitude.

Paul Collins: I try to help anyone I can, musician or not. If I here
a good band or good song, mainly now on Myspace, I take the time to
let them know. If a young musician asks me for advise, I tell them
the truth, as best as I can. You need to spend a lot of time alone to
write good songs, it's always been like that.

Powerpop.Ru: You are for many years ranked as a power pop artist. But
listening to your albums it seemed to me that you never excited
opinion of critics. You simply tried to write good beautiful songs,
not limiting yourselves frameworks of fixed style. Isn't it?

Paul Collins: I love music, I always have, to be called a musician
and a songwriter for me is an honor. For me the most important part
of what I do is to try and write good songs, any kind of song, just
so long as it's real and good. I learned a lot about what makes a
good song from Jack Lee. He was extremely critical and I believe that
you must work very hard to produce a good song, a great song. I hope
that as a songwriter I can draw from all the music I have listened to
that I have loved: rock, blues, jazz, country, folk and rhythm and
blues.

Powerpop.Ru: In your opinion, is there pronounced difference between
talented people living in the Europe and living on other continents?
It seems to me, all physicists of a planet are similar, and all fate-
musicians, theatrical actors, artists are similar.

Paul Collins: I think talented people are lucky to be alive no matter
where they are. I think that the talented people who are able to live
off their talent are very happy and they get to travel through their
work, which for me is a great thing.

Powerpop.Ru: What you see the future of guitar popular music?
In my opinion last thirty years all is very similar, the form of a
song does not almost vary unless the modern sound became more dense.

Paul Collins: I think the guitar is a beautiful and very expressive
and sexual instrument, I don't think it will have any problem
surviving for the next 1000 years or so. I am sure some guy will be
playing a guitar for some girl, as they sit on the moon, looking down
at the earth.

Powerpop.Ru: I know, that Paul Collins very much would like to carry
out concert performances in Russia.
And as a tourist did you visited any cities of the post-Soviet Union?
There are a lot of beautiful cities and they are not only capitals of
fifteen republics of the former USSR.

Paul Collins: I have never been to Russia, but I have read many
wonderful books about it and I would very much hope that one day my
music could take me there. When I was living in NYC I met a lot of
Russians who lived there and I would always say to them, "Someday I
will go to your country!"

Powerpop.Ru: Guitar the basic tool from which you write music. For
many, a guitar is only means for self-expression, but there are a lot
of for whom guitars mean much more (they have many guitars, always
change pickups for them for an original sound, they like to assemble
and strip guitars).

Paul Collins: I own 4 guitars, pre CBS Fender Strat with a custom
John Caruthers neck, a vintage 1969 Rickenbacker sunburst red 6
string, 1984 Guild D25 acoustic and a mid 70's Gibson Gospel
acoustic. I love these guitars and I have had them for many years. I
sometimes think of buying other guitars but then I go, why, I love
the ones I have…maybe someday… All I do is keep them in good repair
as they are working guitars.

Powerpop.Ru: All musicians probably have similar methods of
inspiration. One take a guitar almost every day and during certain
time the inspiration often appears. Another need to be in state of
mind to write a good song. How it occurs in you?

Paul Collins: I have no secret recipe other than spending as much
time as I can trying to write and thinking about music. To me it's
kind of like fishing, you have to have your hook in the water if you
want to catch a fish. Some songs are born full grown, others can take
years to come to life…it's a funny thing…you can not predict it….I
think that is a good thing…but you sure as hell know when a good song
shows up…wow!

Powerpop.Ru: What are your most favourite five albums, created on one
breath and never bother you?

Paul Collins: I couldn't say, but I would probably have one of The
Beatles, one of The Stones, one of mine, one of Johnny Cash, one of
Elvis Presley and one of The Ramones, that's six!! There is so much
great music I am glad I don't have to make these kinds of choices!

Powerpop.Ru: Do you want to tell to our readers something that I
forget to ask you?

Paul Collins: Yes, that we must all bond together in the very many
different ways that each of us can to make our world a better place
so we can all enjoy it. I want to come and see your country and meet
the people and play them my music and then have a few vodkas! Thank
you.

Description:

"Flying High," Paul Collins' 11th album since The Beat, marks an end
to a nearly 12-year musical quest and the start of a creative period
that will generate several more releases, including more full-length
studio albums, a live album and a surprise that is sure to thrill
fans of Collins' entire body of work. The new 12-track album was
recorded in Madrid over the course of four days.

"Flying High" is a return to the basics for Collins. The album
successfully fuses his undeniable song writing talents with his
unparalleled musicianship. In fact, the bulk of the album was
recorded live, with many songs largely completed in the first take.
The album's 12 songs showcase Paul Collins band's undeniable skill
and musical versatility. "Flying High" is a mix of up-tempo guitar
driven Collins instant classics such as 'More Than Yesterday'
and 'Helen' and more introspective darker tracks such
as 'Bobby,' 'I'm On Fire' and 'Flying High.' One of the many
highlights is a track entitled, 'Rock 'n Roll Shoes,' which Paul
describes as "the daughter" of The Beat's classic anthem 'Rock 'n
Roll Girl'.

But "Flying High" would not have flown if not for the knowledge and
wisdom Paul gained from his friendships with such legendary rockers
as Dee Dee Ramone. He formed an admiration for Dee Dee during his
early days touring with The Nerves and soon the two became
friends. "Dee Dee and I would often hang out after shows and discuss
songwriting and music in general," enthused Collins. "I was always
impressed with his attitude toward writing, stressing the importance
of having sincere emotions at the core of every song. That really
stuck with me and I was acutely aware of it throughout the many
years of writing the songs for 'Flying High.'"

Collins also formed a valuable friendship with rock icon Eddie Money
during his days in The Nerves, the quintessential rock band in which
Jack Lee and Peter Case joined Collins to create some of the most
influential rock and roll music of the genre. "Eddie took me under
his wing when I was just starting out," explained Collins.

"He taught me a lot about the showbiz industry, songwriting, and
performing. His advice has been invaluable to everything I have done
since."

"While I was working on 'Flying High' I drew heavily from the
knowledge I gained in knowing such professionals," Collins
added. "Jack Lee and Peter Case also had an enormous impact on me as
an artist. They are all such great musicians. I think their
influence is evident throughout all of my music."

The years of writing for "Flying High" in secrecy began to near a
decade and rumors began swirling. Nobody quite knew what to expect
from this long period of creative gestation. Collins deliberately
took his time. "I wanted to give the songs the time they needed to
grow and take on a life of their own," said Collins, who insisted
the recording sessions for the album be done as quickly as possible
in order to maintain each song's identity. "I didn't want us to
start second guessing the songs. After twelve years, they had
progressed to a point where over-producing them would have destroyed
their integrity. We just wanted to capture them in their most honest
form. I think it was worth the wait. The music speaks for itself and
I'm really proud of what we did." The results are evident
throughout. The songs are sonically robust, the instrumentation and
shimmering vocals first rate and the chemistry between Paul and his
band apparent. The album has an organic feel reminiscent of Paul's
early solo releases, and some of The Beat's later recordings.

"The album is a story," added Collins. "Musically, the songs
represent the spectrum of emotions we all face in day to day life,
so it is really your story as much as it is mine."

Bucketfull Of Brains

Paul Collins will always be remembered for delivering unto the world
the most perfect pop-punk song, "Rock `n' Roll Girl." Unfortunately,
for the most part, it was a pretty cloth-eared world that never paid
enough attention and certainly didn't buy enough records. The
few, mostly located in mainland Europe, who did recognise his talent
have been lucky enough to play host to Mr Collins on and off for the
past couple of decades. During this period he has quite
schizophrenically split his time between being a country troubadour
and a power pop rocker. He succeeds at both having a powerful voice
matched by a passionate delivery. His latest album, Flying High,
focuses far more on his rock/pop side. With songs like "Rock 'n'
Roll Shoes," "Helen," "Afton Place" and "All Over Town" harking back
to his late-'70s heyday. His time in Spain is felt strongly on "Paco
& Juan" with its Spanish-influenced guitar (and subject matter), and
his Americana stylings are to the fore on the moody "FDR" and the
musically simple but emotionally powerful title track. But it's his
conversational story telling, most in evidence on the sad tale
of "Bobby," that holds the show together, and makes this an album to
be proud of.

Shindig! Magazine

Paul Collins' Beat produced some great power-pop/punk records over 25
years ago. It's heartening to discover that Paul decided to carry on
in 1989, and has been recording and gigging in Spain virtually ever
since. Collins always had a knack for power pop melodies and hooks,
and it hasn't deserted him. The punkier stylings of the earlier
recordings have been replaced by a lighter, more acoustic approach.
The songs are well supported by a Spanish band and Paul's son (?) On
backing vocals. Octavio Vinck deserves special mention for tasteful,
economic lead guitar parts and backing vocals. The websites are short
of information, but I presume that Paul now lives in Spain, where pure
pop gets a warm welcome. Whilst the twelve songs here are not instant
classics, they all have nifty hooks and catchy choruses. Let's hope
Paul keeps writing and playing stuff like this for another 25 years.

Paul Collins' Beat : The Godfather Of Powerpop!

By Jens http://www.lowcut.dk/040_lc/interview/3.asp

For 30 years Paul Collins has been making powerpop magic with songs
like "Hanging On The Telephone" (The Nerves) and "Rock'n'Roll Girl"
(The Beat). Many new bands claim to play powerpop but Paul's the
real deal, which I witnessed at this year's Rotterdam Rumble where I
met the friendly Mr. Collins. His Spanish backing band was
brilliant, and his voice was in great shape, truly one of the
highlights of the festival. Paul Collins Beat has a new record out
called "Flying High", The Beat's first in 12 years. Take it away,
Paul!

LC: Tell me a bit of where and how you grew up?

Paul Collins: I was born in New York, when I was very young my
family moved abroad. I spent 4 years traveling, a year and a half in
Vietnam and than 3 years in Greece. It was very interesting and it
opened me up to how different life is in different places. As a
result I love to travel, which is one of the things I love about
being a musician.

LC: What was the first kind of music that caught your attention as a
kid?

PC: My earliest influences of music where listening to American
radio in Vietnam, I remember hearing "Big Girls Don't Cry"
and "Lighting Strikes". I also listened to Hank Williams and Ray
Charles as they were favorites of my fathers. After that it was The
Beatles (my all time favorite group) and The Stones and the rest of
the great music of the 60's.

LC: What bands were you in prior to The Nerves?

PC: I had one band that I was in before I moved to California, we
were called Homegrown, we did a few shows and that was it. I also
worked with a girl singer, Tiffany in NY, she had a kind of revue
and we played the gay clubs in the city.

LC: The Nerves?
PC: The Nerves was really my first profesional group, it was a great
experience and I learned so much about songwriting and music working
with Jack and Peter, plus we had a hell of a lot of fun!

LC: Did you buy a house in Malibu from the royalties of Blondie
covering "Hanging On The Telephone", haha? Were you friends of them?

PC: I didn't but Jack made a lot of money off that song! I knew them
but very casually, we were not friends, just aquaintences.

LC: The Beat?

PC: I was very lucky to have been in 2 really good bands! The Beat
was great because we actully made it on to a major lable, toured the
US and Europe and had our records released worldwide. The Beat
created a base forme that I am still benefiting from, I am very
proud of that band!

LC: Did you see The Beat as a part of any scene; new wave, punk, 60s
bands?

PC: There is no denying that The Beat was part of the New Wave/Power
Pop scene, our first tours coincided with the emergence of New Wave
and it was great! We were definately in the right place at the right
time.

LC: Tell me about your solo albums?

PC: The Paul Collins record that was recorded in San Francisco was
for me the first solo album, I had got the idea that since I no
longer had a band it would be good to make a record with all the
really good muscians living in the Bay Area. It was a lot of fun and
I am happy that I got a chance to work with so many grat muscians on
one record, if I had to, I would say that is my one and only solo
album. "Live In Spain" is really like an accoustic souvenir for my
fans.

LC: Rotterdam Rumble was a blast, you seemed to enjoy yourself?

PC: Yes, I had a great time at the Rumble, we met a lot of cool
people and I thought our show was really well recieved.

LC: You play several euro festivals, how is that compared to club
jobs?

PC: I love the festivals, people come from all over Europe, there
was even a guy from the US at Rumble, Brian from the Fevers. It also
great because at the festivals there are lots of groups and people
so you dont have to worry about how many people show up ect. You
also get the feeling that there is a definately a scene coming back
around this music and it's great how the lines between Punk and New
Wave have blured so that you have all kinds of people really
enjoying the music, you can really see it after the shows when the
dj's come on and you can see everyone dancing and having a lot of
fun!

LC: Any chance of coming to Denmark? You told me you once visited
Copenhagen and Tivoli at 8?

PC: Yes, another great thing about the festivals is all the contacts
you make, we met a promoter at the Rumble who is putting together
shows for us in Denmark!

LC: What new bands do you like?

PC: Unknown bands that I hear on myspace, for example The Elephants
from Paris, I love there sound and would like to maybe produce them.

LC: Future plans, recordings, tours?

PC: We are in a state of constant touring, in Spain and out, we are
going to Paris soon, than south by south west in Austin Texas,
march, Japan in September and in between the rest of Europe, than I
will need to make a new record, I am working on the songs now.

LC: Anything to add?
PC: Just that I am so happy with success of "Flying High" and all
the doors it has opened for us and all the work we are doing, I love
to play music and it's been great how the fans have responded after
having been off the scene for so long...I will not let that happen
again!

Flying High Lucinda

Rare Solo Turn by one of US power-pop's prime movers.

With his late-'70s LA troupes The Nerves and The Beat, Paul Collins
essentially invented the genre of punk-infused power-pop. The Beat's
eponymous 1979 Columbia debut, with its skittering guitar-and-
adrenaline stompers like "Rock and Roll Girl" and "Walking Out On
Love," arguably remains the style's apex, and established an archetype
that lesser bands like The Romantics and The Knack parlayed into mass
successes. The modest Flying High, Collins' first solo turn in 12
years, proves his gift for a hook is still intact, even if the rhythms
are gentler, the songs more reflective. "Afton Place," a catchy-as-
hell highlight, looks back on the early years with empathy and passion.
