SIKHARA
http://www.hop-frog.com/Sikhara.html

Post-world
industrial trio Sikhara have drawn a pattern of tire tracks across four
continents. Their music has evolved over the years into a pancultural
synthesis of all that is brutal and primitive - pounding polyrhythmic
drums, swirling sample storms of voices howling and chanting, and a
live show characterized by ritualistic rigor and ecstatic abandon. To
witness Sikhara is to stare the coming singularity in its bloodshot
eyes.

As the founders of the international Radon collective,
Sikhara have contributed mightily to the noise and experimental music
scenes; inclusive of several stays in Portland during the flowering of
our own freak scene. Along the way they've collaborated and
co-conspired with Acid Mother's Temple, Z'EV, Damo Suzuki's Network,
Steve MacKay, KK Null, Smegma, Bastard Noise, Amps For Christ, Ovo,
Mechanosphere, Nik Turner, Boyd Rice, Jean-Louis Costes, and an
encyclopedic roster of the expatriate underground. Sikhara have spread
their apocalyptic sounds across 26 countries - from an extended
meditative jam in the 2000-year-old Zenjouki Temple in Osaka to a
mountain of flaming garbage in a Polish salt mine. They have carved
their place as one of the most notorious bands in the venerable squats
of Europe, clocked maximal mileage on the U.S. rock club circuit, and
bombed the full gamut of outdoor festivals.

All this from a project that started in an irradiated basement in North
Carolina, 10 years ago.

This
autumn, Sikhara return to the road in the USA, giving their milestone
500th performance in one of their surrogate hometowns: Portland, OR.
Their latest tour is to unveil a holy trinity of new releases on CD and
DVD. Their newest effort, an ep entitled "IV War Haka" (produced by
Jonathan Saldanha) is an epic tale of tribal war, invoking the warrior
spirit of the Maori and Benin voodoo magic. Also available will be a
live album on Oklahoma's Anti-Clock, captured during radio broadcasts
for America's finest sister radio stations, KFKC and WFMU. And finally,
after over a year in the making, Sikhara unveil their first dvd. A film
with music from each of the first three albums and documenting travel
across 3 continents.

NEQUAQUAM VACUUM
http://www.myspace.com/nequaquamvacuum

NEQUAQUAM
VACUUM is a free post-world ensemble, founded in 1999 by Mssrs. Noah
Mickens and Tyler Armstrong. Over time a sound has emerged from their
hours of improvisation which recalls asian and middle eastern
traditional musics, avant-classical percussion, and the noisier end of
new jazz. Frequent comparisons include Harry Partch, gamelan,
Einsturzende Neubauten, noh theater, John Cage, 23 Skidoo, and Crash
Worship. Their method involves the accumulation and construction of
instruments from scrap metal and other found objects, played in
congress with conventional musical instruments from around the world.

They
play with no premeditation, no arrangements, no composition; tapping
instead into what they have come to understand as an ongoing thread of
music that things and can be channeled when the mind is empty. With
exposure to the Japanese dance form known as butoh through
collaborations with Seattle's P.A.N. and others, Nequaquam Vacuum have
grown to understand many commonalities between the two methods, and
sought to combine their Work with this relatively new performance
tradition.

Nequaquam Vacuum has toured and recorded with a
number of different line-ups; most notably as a trio featuring
Armstrong, Mickens, and multi-instrumentalist Travis McAlister. Other
recurring members have included J Lieber (flute, violin, etc.), Uxepi
Ipexu (cello), Gordon Romei (percussion), Rale Sidebottom (percussion),
Nolan Ashley (drums), Ryan Spangler (tuba, contrabass, clarinet, piano,
etc.), James Davis (prepared guitar), Jonathan Howitt (drums), David
Miranda (singing bowl, samplers), Sasha Drummure (percussion), Brian
Crowl (sitar, cumbush), and Brighten Richardson (synthesizer).

MEGATON LEVIATHAN
http://www.myspace.com/megatonleviathan
Megaton
Leviathan is a drone/ metal band that was started by A. Costa and Matt
Brim. Costa and Brim began writing and recording songs in their
basement in the fall of 2007. Since it's inception Costa kept Megaton
Leviathan's sound dark and austere layered with eerie, cryptic vocals.

The
addition of bassist Chris Beug (Wolves In The Throne Room, Bee's Knees,
Static Opera Systems) adds low-end heft and doom to the potion; fueling
the Leviathan's slow ascent from the crushing depths to the cataclysmic
light.

Benefit for cyclist hospitalized in crash!
This Friday 9/11 at Circadia 4705 NE Columbia! Starts 9 pm
http://twitpic.com/gxxsy

Come support Dan, Sarah, and there 3 yr old daughter Birdy. Dan was involved in
a severe bike accident with another cyclist that was drunk. The handlebars
crushed his face and shattered every bone. He lost his entire body volume of
blood. He will need multiple extensive reconstructive surgeries. This is further
complicated by the fact that he has a heart problem and his medication that he
needs to live makes him bleed excessively, adding to both his risk under
anesthesia and his hospital length of stay.
Dan & Sarah moved from Portland recently to Nebraska in search of work and a
career opportunity for Dan. He had just secured his dream job, as Sarah got laid
off. Things were looking up and it seemed the move was worth the struggle after
all. Then as they were riding their bikes on an evening outing tragedy struck.
Fortunately, he has medical benefits but they only cover so much. He did not
have any sick/vacation pay. Money will be miserably tight for them over the next
several months, possibly years.

So come have a good time and give til it hurts :)

Plus beer(donated by New Belgium Brewery), dancing, and karaoke(hundreds of

Hey yall me: JP Jenkins, Mark Kaylor and Kelvin Pittman will join:Delicate Sen

for a night of improvised music.

They are:

Billy Gomberg (synthesizer, laptop), Anne Guthrie (french horn) and Richard
Kamerman (selected percussion, electronics)

it will be on August 25th at 8pm at Gallery Homeland:

2505 SE 11th Ave
Portland, OR 97214

here is some info on them:

Billy Gomberg is a musician and video artist living in Brooklyn NY. His studio
practice incorporates analog synthesis, digital treatments, acoustic recordings
and custom programming that gives rise to electronic sound caught gazing at its
own physicality, acoustics in love with their own abstraction. Billy has
exhibited or performed in New York, Boston, Providence, London, Lisbon, Graz,
Zurich and elsewhere. His CD's Comme and Days are available from mOAR and The
Land Of, respectively.

Anne Guthrie is a composer, performer and PhD candidate in Architectural
Acoustics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her acoustic compositions have
been performed by the University of Iowa Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble
Pamplemousse, and the S.E.M. Ensemble, and her electronic works are available at
www.stasisfield.com and www.and-oar.org. As a french horn improviser, she has
performed with Edwin Prevost, Jeremiah Cymerman, Mattin, and Pauline Oliveros,
among others,

Richard Kamerman prefers small sounds to large sounds but that doesn't mean they
are always performed as quiet sounds. He also likes accidental sounds and
collecting his instruments from people's trash on the street. Although
essentially a percussionist, he rarely sits behind a drum kit, preferring to
explore the percussive behaviors of various repurposed electronics - computer
circuit boards, mechanical parts. Other regular collaborators include Reed Evan
Rosenberg (as the duo Tandem Electrics), Steven Flato, Gregory Reynolds, and the
composer's quintet Frogwell.

Special multi channel installation by French Family Fun (JP Jenkins, Bryan
Eubanks) and lovely love loving by Johnathan Sielaff, Matt Carlson and David
Rafn.Bryan and I have been doing FFF since 2001. Its essentially a continual
recycling of sounds we recorded in his living room back then and have slowly
added to and recycled every show we have ever played to create complex
individual sound events that collectively create a layered environment of
reverbs/spaces and recordings and re-recordings in the spaces we have played
in... does this BS make any sense? Lets hope not; its all about listening
anyway. xoxo JP

For those of us who were around, who can forget the mix of inspiring and
dreadful news coming from Italy Indymedia July 2001? The Genova G8 protest was
one of the largest mass mobilizations of the anti-globalization movement. So
many brilliant tactics and creative defensive gear & maneuvers. The preemptive
and violent raid on Indymedia. The immense boxcar barricade protecting the G8.
The violent raid of the school where activists were beaten in their sleep and
brought out in body bags("the chilean night"). The death of 21 yr old Carlo
Giulianni. These important events were all too quickly overshadowed by the 9/11
attack that happened shortly after.
Anti-Imperialists are proud to present Berlusconi's Mouse Trap. This film is the
most complete coverage of this event I've seen to date and includes many
statements from people explaining directly their reasons for being there. As the
G8 carries out it's deadly agenda to this day, come watch this film and let us
remember why it is so important to rise up against it.

Tuesday August 11th at 7pm
Red & Black Cafe 400 SE 12th Ave.

Ireland IMC film description:
The Protests against the G8 in July 2001 in Genoa Italy were the biggest and
most significant protests in Western Europe since the Poll Tax riots in the UK.
Italian Prime Minister Sylvio Berlusconi, wanting to impress his new best mate
George W. Bush, orchestrated a brutal Media/Police preemptive strike on the
Anti-Capitalist Movements' biggest First World mobilisation to date. When the
weekend of protests ended Carlo Guiliani was dead and a school full of sleeping
activists had been attacked in what is popularly referred to as the 'Chilean
Night'.

The film traces the events of the three days of protests in detail and poses the
question - Was it all a setup? If Seattle was 'Star Wars' then this is 'The
Empire Strikes Back'. It is made from a combination of footage of the Genoa
protests against the G8 shot by 10 members of IMC Ireland, material from the
Italy IMC Archives and material from various other sources. This compelling
footage combined with on the spot interviews and reenacted voiceover commentary
and analysis from various websites which were active during the protests
provides a in-depth blow by blow retelling of the story of the three days of the
Genoa protests against the G8.

doing break dance moves on their heads to folk rock as Mayor Potter
asks the audience if they are "ready to rock." And tones of good
local tunes played to a far from typical crowd in a symbolic gesture
that local music is central to life in Portland, and that
participation in local creative culture is valuable. Come join us as
we enter the third free, all-ages, outdoor, early-evening installment
into the records.

Basshaters (San Francisco)

Drum and double bass duo bridging the gap between acoustic free improv and
electronic noise. Equally active in both the new music/free improv and
BrutalSFX/noise scenes thriving in the SF Bay Area. Fascinated by the
physicality of their instruments, Basshaters enjoys working with a multitude
of sounds and techniques exploiting the vast possibilities available for
activating large resonant bodies. The duo seeks directness and intensity in
execution. Subtleties emerge from the bold statement of simple ideas.

In addition to Basshaters, Dryer & Heule have a trio with clarinetist Jacob
Lindsay, with an album on Lisbon's Creative Sources. This unconventional
rhythm section also has a trio CD with saxophonist Jack Wright. Heule is
active with his brutal improv duo, Ettrick, and has toured the US and Europe
with Gowns. Tony Dryer has toured extensively with rock groups including the
Flying Luttenbachers and Usurp Synapse.

Jacob Felix Heule: drum set, electronics

http://www.myspace.com/tonydryerbass

Peninsula Project (Oslo)

Tuba/guitar/bass trio something between a marching band, a rock band, and a
harsh noise band.

Peninsula Project is a hard-working Norwegian trio, active in the Oslo
improv scene with many different projects. They are also busy with their
rock band MOE, who will release their first 7" single in February 2009.

With a feedback tuba screaming in the highest frequencies, guitar blasting
on pitches out of control, bass sneering like a mean dog and voice taken
from a Hitchcock movie, it's just another feedback marching band.

Håvard Skaset: guitar
Børre Mølstad: tuba
Guro Skumsnes Moe: bass and voice
