Description

This is the mailing list for Melbourne-based singer-guitarist Penny Ikinger, a player on the Australian underground scene since the early 1980s.

Penny's musical beginings can be traced back to Sydney's fab Wet Taxis, the psychedelic '60s outfit led by vocalist-pianist Louis Tillett. As well as playing guitar in two line-ups of that band, Penny went on to work with Louis, in Australia and overseas.

Penny went on to play in Kings of the World, Red Dress, the Sacred Cowboys and Salon Baby, and guested on guitar with Kim Salmon and Tex Perkins.

In November 2001 Penny released her debut solo EP "Songs from the Deep" to critical acclaim. The three track EP also featured an appearance by long time musical colleague Louis Tillett who contributed piano and deep as the ocean backing vocals on the song "Sponge Diver". This dark and evocative EP received national and international airplay

In May 2002 her video for the song "Kathleen" (from "Songs from the Deep") was nominated for an award at The Melbourne Film Festival and it received national television airplay. This video was directed by emerging film maker Rachael Lucas who captures the essence of Ikinger's unique sound visually in a midday martini of beeds, bubbles, fur and fender feedback.

July 2002 saw the completion of her debut solo album Electra and by the end of the year she had signed with Career Records (USA). Based in Montana this label is the progeny of Radio Birdman guitar legend Deniz Tek and US musician/producer/radio presenter Ron Sanchez. Electra was released in the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia in September 2003 and scored a rave review from David Fricke, Senior Editor of American Rolling Stone.

Penny toured America to promote Electra in May/April 2004. She also toured Australia and New Zealand.

In 2005 she joined Scientist Kim Salmon's band SALMON as a member of his five(!) guitar line-up. Now she prepares to record her second solo album.
