Sad news from Los Angeles...

I only met him in later years, but he was a sweet, funny, friendly man and will
be missed.

--------------------
Brendan Mullen dies at 60; founder of influential Masque punk rock club
--------------------

The Hollywood venue, which opened in 1977, quickly became a crucible for
emerging, anarchic L.A. groups like the Weirdos and the Germs and later X and
the Go-Go's.

By Randy Lewis

October 13 2009

Brendan Mullen, founder of the Masque punk rock club in Hollywood that helped
launch the vibrantly anarchic music scene on the West Coast in the late 1970s,
died Monday after suffering a massive stroke over the weekend. He was 60.

I'd love to go get screened, but I just don't feel like doing anything.

I'm sending this out here and on facebook, hoping to reach everyone...

This August was the four year katrinaversary and I just had another birthday...Springsteens 60th got me remembering jazzfest 06 and everything in between. I wanted to express major respect to everyone that helped us through..

My family for putting me up, keeping us going and not questioning the desire to go back. Sam Powell and the folks at Pianocraft for helping me feel useful and teaching me some new things into the bargain. Gina Sue for staying in constant touch and forcing me to learn how to text. Jon Fox for constant encouragement and United gear. Michael, Johnny, Brook and Nikki for Lancaster. Tom and Steph for more than I can list. Johnny and MP for a place to stay and the Rebirth in Baltimore. Nancy Nicholl for work in Washington, Kasey Reimer for work in Philly, Mike Basdavanos for work and peaceful mind in NoVa. Evan and Siobhan for possibly the best Thanksgiving ever, crawfish/cornbread dressing under a blue tarp. Jerrod and Dan for helping me clean up and staying with me at the Crown and Anchor when the city was dark and watching the Saints in depressing games in Baton Rouge. Bob, Christine and Rosie for a great dinner and positive vibes. Sam and Ses and Kayla, Rick and Shop and Ella for places to stay and letting my kids see NY and take their minds off what was going on at home. Devin and Eric for taking care of Evan. Lawrence and Lucy for amazingly cheerful attitudes. Bill, Phyllis and Cassie for listening. All the rePunk group, a year later, for not asking "So, why do you live below sea level and demand government money to help you out?" Tom, Johnny and Brian for a totally energizing time and being willing to play "Crescent City", our refugee theme. Mark and Shawn at Piety St for giving me the first sign of post K life with the "River in Reverse" sessions. Shawna most of all for living with the lack of understanding in Pittsburgh and coming home determined to raise her kids in the city they belong to and, hopefully, will always love and remember.

...and no stranger than the Jaguar London Calling ad ('the Ice Age is comin...so, erm, buy a Jag?") or Carnival Cruises Lust for Life, (which is much more apt: with the liquor and drugs/and the flesh machine/he's gonna do another striptease...and maybe they DO hypnotize chickens on certain Carribean cruises...)

No one listens to the lyrics anyway, right...?  When it comes down to it, the opening chords of London Calling simply say "British" to many people.  All irony is lost on them.  Like when I heard Lost in the Supermarket in the supermarket.  hey, at least it wasn't muzak.  It was original. Everything can/will be commoditized.  That's the way of the west. Strummer and Jones would laugh and shrug.

And for a little video treat, Here's a 101ers reunion in 2003. A perfectly awful and at the same time wonderful version of Janie Jones.  A bald Mick Jones pops in after the first verse and things get going. Old rockers never die.  They just get Tuesday night gigs at the Decade.

It's for Absolut Vodka - and it's supposedly a cover by a Brooklyn band called "Fall On Your Sword." In keeping with their pop art advert tradition, the scenes are all performance- art related, spelling out "Doing Things Differently Leads to Something Exceptional" - http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=5O16C1ZLuyI

I think it's a different performance than the original but I haven't heard it in quite some time.
