Well, I still love DT, QR, Shadow Gallery, Event, Lemur Voice,PoS. I
just don't see the genre as something exciting as I used to consider.
Everybody is repeating the same type of music. I prefer to listen to
tech metal and technical Death metal.

that one album by Ozric Tentacles is like electronic/keyboard music
with tight rock rhythm section. like Tangerine Dream? its cool. i
read their albums all sound the same though with no evolution.
i like all porcupine tree except last album IN Absentia.

Hello Alzn and the list,
Happy holidays to everyone.
Probably, some people on this list enjoy Andromeda quite a lot. Somehow,
people have difficulties to get into 2nd album. In my case,
I really enjoy 2nd album. Perhaps, I prefer second one that has more
original atmospheres and tastes on their music contents.
To me, Liquid Tension Experiment is really great stuff for me. Perhaps,
people who are not into LTE are not big fans of instrumental
chops or mind boggling jam style from my two cents' opinion :-)
> Hubi Meisel from Dreamscape? I didn't like his voice. The music must
> be good though.
It is a matter of taste that you like Hubi's vocal or not. I am probably one
of minorities that I enjoy Hubi's vocal a lot. It seems that
some people do not like his style. Hubi Meisel's EmOcean is not merely solo
album without complex ensemble, rather
it sounds like more closely to band effort. As usual, Daniel Flores of
Mind's Eye did fantastic drum works using lots of
cymbals and toms in the fasion of Rod Morgenstein, Chad Wackerman, and Jeff
Porcaro. Marcel Coenen of ex. Lemur Voice
plays fantastic guitar chops. In addition, although I mentioned last time
about Vivien Lalu, the way he create interesting sounds
from his synth (probably, using KORG TRITON mainly with his gears) make me
very interested. Vivien does not usually shred and wank, but
he plays really tastefully. In particular, I am impressed with his sound
making ability. Perhaps, his style might be closer to
Dali's Dilemma's Matt Guillory in my opinion.
Btw, I have enjoyed listening to Anathema's Judgement, since I got it from
my friend. :)
What is your recent favorite music you have been listening nowadays
(including new one and old one)?
I wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best.

Hello Tetsu,
Happy holidays to you.
I only have Andromeda's second album. Its got a slick feel.
I don't like LTE as I think its self congratulatory glorification as
well as a way to persuade a new keyboard personel change.
Hubi Meisel from Dreamscape? I didn't like his voice. The music must
be good though.

Actually, I like both Andromeda's albums. Slightly, I prefer their second
album to first album.
I did not know that you do not like LTE. As for German prog metal style, I
really enjoy
a recent release of Hubi Meisel - EmOcean. EmOcean is not merely solo album
for Hubi,
it is kind of a small organization of European prog metal musicians. Daniel

I like that Andromeda album II-I. To me it has a German prog metal sound and
they
remind me of Superior. not the best playing talent but the songs are very
creative and
interesting.
i hate liquid Tension experiment, haha
Andromeda is not a Liquid Tension clone.
They have their own unique sound, which is very refreshing, and
they're great. But they do have some overlap with the Liquid Tension
sound. The clip below demonstrates that. You can almost hear Petrucci
and Portnoy dueling.
http://64.225.63.128/mp3/Andromeda.mp3
I've been listening to Andromeda's lastest album a lot lately, and if
someone asked me which band they sound closest to, I would have to
say Liquid Tension Experiment. I'm not kidding.
The new Andromeda album seems to be named: II = I
It's got a funny name, but it's great music, and it's better than
their first album. I think they are a better band than Liquid
Tension, and they don't have large improvisational filler-tracks. I
also think Andromeda's keyboard player is much more interesting to
listen to.

Hello Christian,
Thanks for your posting. I am Tetsu of Pilgrim World. Indeed, Liquid Tension
Experiment and
Dream Theater are really excellent groups that I also enjoy listening to.
LTE and Dream Theater are
one of best progressive groups, so it seems very tough for other bands to
follow their path.
Anyway, if you enjoy LTE and DT, I hope you enjoy progressive instrumental
project called
Gordian Knot. Gordian Knot's first album features several quality musicians
(including John
Myung of DT as a guest musician). Hopefully, Gordian Knot might be
interesting for you. If you look for
Dream Theater style bands, there are many acts playing everywhere. A band
sounds similar to
Dream Theater, but they have own sounds. On the other hand, if you look
for original sounding groups strictly, you would think that those bands are
copycats. In my case, I usually
enjoy listening to the bands that influenced by Dream Theater and Rush,
however they make their own
sounds with their musical interpretation. From my experience, I started
exploring Magna Carta bands at
first after checking out Dream Theater and Rush. I found out that Enchant
and Shadow Gallery are especially
excellent for my tastes. Since then, I have been searching interesting
progressive metal and rock bands all
over the world. Inside Out label also release interesting prog rock bands as
well.
Christian, I recommend that you need to visit the gathering place for prog
metal and progressive instrumental
listeners, PERPETUAL MOTION BOARD.
http://www.tpom.com/pmboard/index.php
Nowadays, this place changed the name as PM X. There are several people who
are very knowledeable
about progressive metal in general. I suggest you to post there. Hopefully,
the reaction of your question would be
much bigger than this Pilgrim World e-mail list, if posting there. Various
topics have been discussed
over there, if you are curious please enjoy there.
In my local town area, I have hard time to find the cds that I look for
(like you). Nowadays, I usually place the
order at the quality prog rock/metal online shops, such as THE LASER'S EDGE.
Ken Golden of The Laser's Edge
is a really helpful man who knows important and excellent prog metal/rock
groups, so The Laser's Edge is highly
recommended online shop. The Laser's Edge online shop usually send the cds
you order really quick within a week
or a few weeks.
http://www.lasercd.com/Merchant/lasercd/
If you look for a particular cd, visit GEMM.com to browse several stores
that carry the item.
I hope other list members will suggest which cd that might be interesting
for you.
(Oh, BTW, I like some jazz/fusion bands, too.)
Tetsu Hamanaka (Pilgrim World: Japanese home of Prog Metal)

Christian,
That's easy to answer. Yes, there are a lot of bands, but the greatest and
most sophisticated ones are not in abundance. There are a number of people
on this forum who are well versed in the prog-metal genre, and I'm sure they
will offer you some great suggestions. And I would like to offer you the
name's of bands who I feel are the classiest of the bunch. I don't know all
of them, of course, but I kid you not about the band's I will suggest below.
My favorites are:
Symphony X
Pain of Salvation
Flower Kings (This band is really a fusion band, but I had to
mention them anyway.)
Andromeda
Arena
ARK
If you have a little money to spend, here are my recommendations:
Symphony X - "V"
Pain of Salvation - "The Perfect Element"
Flower Kings - "Unfold the Future"
Andromeda - "Extension Of The Wish"
Arena - "The Visitor"
ARK - "Ark"
Here is a web site you can find TONS of progressive albums.

Hello pilgrimworld members,
First let me say, i am currently taking my first steps in the prog
metal genre, and i don't know many bands yet. To this type of music,
i gained access through my preference for highly complex contemporary
jazz music. A friend of mine once introduced me to progressive, namely
a cd by liquid tension has been shown to me. I wasn't fond of it from
the first moment on, but after a while, i began to like it and in the
end, i must have heard this cd (experiment no. 2) at least some 50
times!
After buying the other liquid tension experiment cd and some dream
theater cds, i went to homepage of magna carta to look for some
further bands. I came across of lemur voice, of which i decided to
buy the albums (i don't have them yet).
My problem now is, that there is a vast amount of metal acts around,
and it is very difficult to gain a good overview over the scene.
Follow the label links is always a good method, but it costs a lot of
time. I live in Switzerland, and unfortunately i don't know any
specialized stores over here.
This led me to the idea to ask people, which are competent enough,
directly in a forum or so.
Luckily i found your group. could you please help me with some
suggestions?
The style i am looking for should primarly be similar to liquid
tension. I mean preferrably instrumental prog or bands with some
instrumental songs. Then the playing ought to be highly sophisticated,
technically perfect and razor sharp. The band should have fast songs.
I also appreciate the synphonic way the songs are arranged in on
liquid tension cds.
Do you know a group that i would probably like?
Thank you very much for your help!
cheers, Chris

now I listen to Poison the Well. They are emo-hardcore, metallic
hardcore. heavy stuff! i have all their albums. Besides the serious
riffage, they have emotion and melody unlike crap like Hatebreed or
Cult of Luna.
Hi,
I could not say the label commercialized them, i think they chose
that way. Since Kerry Livegreen opted to leave, they were forced to
find a new style without him. At least their 1995 album Freaks
of Nature album is superb, maybe because of David Ragsdale.
I did like half the songs in their latest album released from
Magna Carta.

Lullacry plays simple pop-melodic rock and roll metal. Its fun music. Harmonic power singing. Youthful girl singer. No goth or atmospheric stuff. But not like Evanescence, Rachel Farris, Avril Livagne though.
To me Evanescence is like Lacuna Coil and Nightwish with very Americanized signing. They're cool.

Hey Everybody,
I just wanted to hip everyone in the group to a place I'm working
on, on the net where everyone and anyone who likes any kind of Rock
music can come and sample some of the best of the best.
I like so many different types of Rock and I feel that some how
labels, gener's what have you, have stagnated what Rock music has
been and will always be about. I created this place that Rock
musicians in general could get equal billing with their to be fan
bases.
The whole context here is to get us to open our minds to different
flavors of Rock with out the labels. Going in with an open minded
approach, you don't have to like all that you hear, but if it
doesn't have a label the idea is that you'll at least give it a shot
and if you don't like what you hear, you can move on.
I think it will be fun to unite Rock musicians as well as the fans
of any type of Rock music, that you can meet new people here and
find new Rock music. The whole story of how and why this concept
emerged is up on the site. This is a kicking ground for both fans
and musicians alike. If you have any suggestions, this is brand
new, I have one band up on the site right now, this is for anyone
who loves Rock music in general and this will be your stomping
ground! I'd love to hear from anyone who has two or three cents to
throw in, this is your place, help me shape it.

Hello Scott,
Thanks for your posting. Well, currently Pilgrim World mailing list is
kind of slow. But we sometimes bring up a few interesting topics and enjoy
discussing.
Yeah, I am glad to hear that you feel comfortable on this list.

Cool! I am also a fan of Dixie Dregs. Personally, I am really impressed with
Steve Morse, Dave LaRue, Rod Morgenstein, T-Lavitz, and DD members.
Esp., I respect T-Lavitz's versatile styles (perhaps been influenced by
Steve
Morse I guess). T's keyboard playing is really awesome. He absorbs many
different styles, such as Funk, Rock, Jazz, Prog, Blues, Latin, Country, and
several
other music. Well of course, all musicians involving Dixie Dregs are
awesome.
I am considering the purchase of new Steve Morse DVD featuring Dixie Dregs
and Steve Morse Band live footages with bonus of his performance of DEEP
PURPLE.
Thanks for introducing us the music of Be Bop Deluxe. I am getting curious
about BBD now.

King Crimson is really amazing (still in this century). A few years ago,
I went to see them live. Well, yeah That KC is not same ItCotCK days
line-up. But man, their live performance was really awesome. I was
totally blown away by them. Esp., their performance of RED was
incredibly great.
Thanks for your interesting comments. I will write next time with
my a few other topics :-)
