Celebrate Pride with the Pink Singers – 21 today!
21 years after their foundation, the Pink Singers, Europe's oldest lesbian and gay choir, return to their roots with a high-profile performance at this year's Pride Rally in Trafalgar Square.
"More real life than Westlife"
The Pink Singers will open the Pride Rally at 3.00p.m. on Saturday 3rd July and, as a finale to the event, will join forces with politicians and gay rights campaigners including Ken Livingstone, Peter Tatchell and Sir Ian McKellen in a rendition of their well-known anthem "Hand in Hand". This promises to be a fitting celebration not only of the choir's 21st anniversary but also of Pride's return to the spirit of a more political era of gay rights.
"Age of consent"
The Pink Singers were formed in 1983 by gay cabaret activist Mark Bunyan and the late Brian Kennedy, gay journalist, publisher and activist, to sing at that year's Gay Pride Festival. 21 years later and stronger than ever under the leadership of Musical Director Mladen Stankovic, the choir has notched up an impressive number of performances throughout the UK, Europe and America, has appeared on radio and TV and even backed Bronski Beat on their first album, "Age of Consent".
