Later that year, The Bee-Liners were named Roots Music Associations's Bluegrass Artist of the Year, plucked from among luminaries like
Alison Krauss and Merle Haggard, who also shared the nomination.

Batavia House Concert Thursday, December 3, 7:30 $15 Suggested Donation for Reservations/Directions lynn.garren@... or 630-761-0599 Co-sponsored by PRFMS and Fox Valley Folklore Society
Don’t Miss the Thursday, December 3 House Concert with Bryan Bowers!
For nearly three decades, Bryan Bowers has been to the autoharp what Earl Scruggs was to the five-string banjo. He presents instrumental virtuosity combined with warmth, eloquence, expression and professionalism. Bryan has a dynamic outgoing personality and an uncanny ability to enchant a crowd in practically any situation.
From his rather unglamorous beginning as a street singer, Bryan Bowers has become a major artist on the traditional music circuit. Bower’s creativity and talent have won him induction into Frets Magazine’s First Gallery of the Greats after five years of winning the stringed instrument, open category of the magazine’s readers’ poll. This distinction put Bowers along side other luminaries, such as Chet Atkins, David Grisman, and Tony Rice, recognized for their personal accomplishments. In 1993, Bryan was inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame to stand only with Maybelle Carter, Kilby Snow, and Sara Carter.
“Bowers is widely regarded as the leading virtuoso on the autoharp... Bowers also has distinct gifts as a singer and songwriter.” – People Magazine

The one picture of a lot of friends - i think that was before dave was open and had knocked down some partitions. The scary part of it was we had five bass players in a very confined area

Hi Folks,
The 2009 – 2010 season represents the 25th anniversary of the Plank Road Folk Music Society. I have created an online album of photos taken around 1982 –1986. I will be adding to the album as time permits.
Those of you who were around at the time should find them very entertaining.
Very entertaining indeed....thanks for sharing Dave!!

Hi, for
those in or near Chicago, February Sky (Phil
Cooper & Susan Urban - www.februarysky.com -
www.myspace.com/februaryskyfolk) are playing at the amazing Life Force Arts
Center at 3148 N Lincoln Avenue
in Chicago from
4-6 p.m. on Sunday, November 15th.We
scheduled this concert so that it would not conflict with Sunday Evening Folk
at Bill's Blues, and we are sad that this is no longer an issue.
But we hope
you will come out to support not only us, but the Center, since the owner and
manager, Joan Forest Mage, is eager to have folk concerts at the Center.Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door,
and half of that goes to support the Center, which is doing relatively well
after its first year in this most challenging era, but needs folks to attend
its events to stay afloat!BTW, there is
plenty of easy street parking near the Center, especially on Sunday. In addition, the Lincoln , Belmont & Halsted intersection
is easily accessible by public transit.
For those
of you who have not heard February Sky since our CD release party last year, we
have a ton of new material, and due to another full year of touring, have
become a polished and most entertaining band. This concert will also be the "formal" release of our 6-song
EP, "Four Stories and a Couple of Tunes."
Just got this note from Norm Siegel. Bills Blues in Evanston is now formally closed. They made a last-ditch effort to fund keeping it open but failed. Only made it there a few times but it was a great venue and the whole folk community feels the sadness when we loose one of the few we have.
Support Folk Music, Folk Dance and Storytelling before it's too late.

Folks:
This morning, I received a phone call from Bill Gilmore, owner of Bill's Blues Bar, telling me that the last ditch efforts to save the venue had failed. This is a major blow to the music community in Chicago. For over 6 years, Bill's has presented the best in blues, jazz, rock, folk, hip hop/rap on the North Shore, and, also included special events for Northwestern University students in the form of "The Pub Quiz" as well as renting the room out for private functions. This venue, in conjunction with Lilfest and Nancy Emrich, has also brought talent into the community that would have never been heard or seen otherwise at reasonable admission charges. Over the last 2 years. our sound crew has done so much to make this venue playable for artists and listenable for patrons, all of it out of their own pockets in an effort to support Bill's Blues.
This loss will be felt across the entire community.
Thanks to all of you who supported our efforts.
Best wishes for a great holiday seaason.

Our friend Mike Anderson sent me a note announcing his first "Mountain Dulcimer Winter Weekend" at "Three Sisters Folk Arts School" in Chillicothe, IL. on February 26 - 28, 2010.
The weekend will include songs, skill-building activities, and a great concert featuring Mike Anderson, Lynn Furness, and others and MC’d by Steve Endsley. Discover how to play melodies high and low on the fingerboard, and how to simplify or complicate any melody in this weekend workshop. Time will be spent on strumming, flat picking, fingerpicking, fingerings and chords. This class is intended for students who already have some experience and can tune and strum a mountain dulcimer. Students are required to bring their own instruments. Registered students receive one free admission to the Saturday night concert, plus continental breakfast and lunch on both Saturday and Sunday.
Check it out,
Juel Ulven
