Subject: News Flash – Henry Stone Awarded Final Judgment Vs. Estate of Ray Charles
henrystonemusic
Send Email Send Email

Henry Stone, the legendary godfather of the Miami Sound and early innovator
of Disco Music, won his claim in court that he is the owner of four original
Ray Charles master recordings that were cut at his Miami studio in 1951.
Stone’s
claim was challenged by Joe Adams representing the estate of Ray Charles, but
the Estate never responded to the legal questions of ownership and the Court
awarded Stone the final judgment.

Stone said that back then Ray Charles was just another young musician in need
of work. Though he was very good, he had not yet made a name for himself and
Stone gave him time in the Studio to make the four recordings, “I Found My
Baby
”, “Walkin’ and Talkin’”, “Why Did You Go”, and “I’m Wondering
and
Wondering”. Stone recorded Charles at a time when he was recording soon to be
other
great artists - including Sam and Dave, Steve Alaimo, James Brown, and many
others.

As was customary in those years for studio musicians, there were no
contracts, musicians were paid as work-for-hire, and the record label owned the
music
recorded.   There were no mega music companies and no mega music law firms;
deals were man to man between honorable men in the business. The studio
musicians
were grateful for the work.

The estate was given the opportunity to respond through Stone’s law firm, but
never did.

These historic and one of a kind recordings and many others are presented on
Stone’s website, for all to enjoy at www.henrystonemusic.com/hsmwebstore.htm.

A while back, in one of the music groups I'm in, someone posted a song
listed as:

BEVERLY- Happy New Year (1967)

There was no last name. Does anyone know anything about this song?

IT's a good one. I'm haunted by it. Have searched google every way I can
think of and can find NOTHING about it. It seems like I have heard this
before. I think I recognize a writing style. Is it Paul Williams?
Neil Diamond?

Female vocal. (Although it sometimes sound a little like a male!)
Stark piano. Fuzz guitar and drums, great piano break, ends w. same stark
piano. Only 2:10. Almost sounds like a demo. A great, lost classic.

Here are the lyrics:

BEVERLY- Happy New Year
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The world's a little older
As distant sounds move
The nights a little colder
And I'm alone,
Happy New Year
A cheer on New Year spirit
Dies on the still night air
I shout, but you can't hear me
But you don't care, Happy New Year
Baby, you dont care, Happy New Year
(Jazzy piano break)
The year is lined with promise
So greet it joyfully
A time so full of promise
Holds none for me
Happy New Year
No bridges left to cross now,
No dragons left to slay,
I've never been as lost now,
You'll be gone away, Happy New Year
You'll be gone away, Happy New Year
I did find a listing for BEVERLY who recorded on DEREM records in
1967, no reference to the songs. It does, however cross reference to
The Beverly Sisters who recorded from 1956 to 1961 (aka The Beverley
Sisters).
Miami, FL -- One of the great groups discovered by Henry Stone, The 2 Live
Jews, appears on VH1’s show “The Greatest: 40 Least Hip Hop Moments”
courtesy
of Joseph L. Stone. The show will first air on Saturday, April 30th at 1:00pm
EST.
The 2 Live Jews started as a parody of the hot hip hop group 2 Live Crew.
Their debut album, 1990's “As Kosher as They Wanna Be”, featured the rhyming
skills of "Moisha MC" and "Easy Irving." These were two aged Jewish-American men
who had ostensibly discovered a latent penchant for rocking the mike. In
actuality, they were personas created in a studio by Joe Stone (Irving) andEric
Lambert (Moisha), who were not even elderly.
Subject: ARCHIES ON DVD: My Review
drmark7
Send Email Send Email
Here's a review with some exiting news that I'm sending out to several
groups and individuals...
Did you know that the 1968, THE ARCHIE SHOW is now out on a legitimate
DVD???
ARCHIE & FRIENDS: The Legacy Collection featuring:
"THE ARCHIE SHOW"
From: www.nostalgiaventures.com
"We're exited to release the original Archie and Friends cartoons that
were first aired onTV in 1968."
4 volumes (I got mine from www.half.com for $7.99 + shipping.)
The prints are PRISTINE (From Hallmark Entertainment) and the VIVID
colors are so psychedelic... with the flashing, color backgrounds... I
wouldn't recommend watching them in the dark... it almost hurt my eyes!
<G>
The volume I chose, just happened to have my 2 favorite Archies songs,
"Truck Driver" and "Ride Ride Ride", mistakenly listed as, "Ride, Drive".
Each DVD has 3 complete ARCHIE shows, with all the intros/bumpers. Each
episode runs 23m. I would say they were nearly complete(?)
Plus the "Archie Dance Of The Week". I didn't recall that the dance that
was introduced is used again in the main song of the week. In retrospect,
I was a little disappointed to discover that the song "videos" weren't
more related to the plot of the songs than they were. "Truck Driver" just
shows a big semi truck (with cool bumper stickers) driving around and the
gang dancing to "the dance of the week."
Featuring the voice work of the late Howard Morris (he was Ernest T. Bass
and Jet Screamer among other famous TV characters), who's both Jughead
AND Hot Dog!
PLUS there's even a, "US OF ARCHIE" episode. I barely remembered this
show... From the BICENTENNIAL era 1975-1976, where EVERYTHING was red,
white and blue. It seems the descendants of the Archie Gang were involved
in events of the 1776 era! I didn't remember that there were original
songs. Don't get exited. There's no Ron Dante and Co. involvement... The
songs here are by... Music and Sound Effects: Horta-Mahana Corp. Theme
And Songs by Jackie Mills and Jeff Michael. Background music by Yvette
Blais and Jeff Michael. With songs produced by Jackie Mills. Music
Publisher... Shermley Music Company ASCAP. (Anyone know anything further
MUSIC-wise? Singer?) This is when Saturday morning was going downhill...
With a nod to "Educational Advisors" in the end credits.
*PLUS* There's even MORE! As an "Extra"...
ARCHIES FUNHOUSE- featuring "Theme song and skits."
The wonderful live and animated intro with a theater full of live-action
kids in front of the Archie and His Gang with the GIANT JUKEBOX. This DVD
even includes a SABRINA How-To magic trick!
The DOWN SIDE... For some reason, the original makers thought it was
necessary to overdub EXTRA TAMBORINE in the theme and almost all the
songs. PLUS, the soundtrack is VERY thin and tinny sounding. With
a hint of echo. Like the DVD makers were trying to create pseudo stereo
from the mono soundtrack.
If I had my druthers, I'd druther they'd have re-mixed the soundtrack
with the STEREO originals.
This is getting nit-picky, but there also appears to be some digital
clean-up on the image. The lines look a little thinner at times. A known
side-effect of digital clean-up.
They had to tart up the DVD box covers with Betty and Veronica being a
bit more buxom than ever seen on the show...
STILL, constructive criticsim aside, this is the closest we're probably
ever going to get to having some good, representative ARCHIES episodes at
hand on a legit DVD. I recommend them highly!
Ray Charles Remix
The original Ray Charles recording of “Walkin’ and Talkin’” that was
released on Henry Stone’s Rockin Records label in the 1950’s is being
brought into
the 21st Century with a great dance remix by Christian Dio, one of the industry
’s top mixers. Dio has mixed for artists as Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and
Angie Stone.
While veteran music men Sam Weiss and Henry Stone were sunning themselves in
Florida, their sons, Joe Stone and Michael Weiss, were brought together by
record industry A&R man Hosh Gureli. They joined forces and organized this great
project.
The remix will be released on Nervous Records for worldwide distribution.
Look for this groundbreaking track to hit the streets immediately.
Posted By "Darren" in the Something Weird group: Uploaded to my webspace
are high-bit MP3s of "The Sound Gallery Vol.1" (1995) CD.
Whole album! This stuff goes out of print just as quick as it is
released,
it seems. Those familiar with low budget, late 60s, early 70s films will
definitely find a few of these tracks familiar. I believe one particular
tune was used briefly in the Ed Wood- starring PRETTY MODELS ALL
IN A ROW (1969).
The folder located in here until Saturday June 11, 2004.
http://www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com/SWV/
Total size is around 140 MB.
Track list is below.
Dr. Mark adds. I have this CD and it's a good one. Not every song
was notable to me. Highlights were RIVIERA AFFAIR and BLARNEY STONED and
a few more I can't recall right now.
The Sound Gallery Vol.1
1. Oh, Calcutta! - The Dave Pell Singers
2. Black Rite - Mandingo
3. Punch Bowl - Alan Parker
4. Night Rider - Alan Hawkshaw
5. Riviera Affair - Neil Richardson (1970- *MH- This one is WAY familiar,
but I can't put my finger on it. Was it used in a Monty Python episode?
Or as a theme to a local movie broadcast? I bet you will know it if you
hear it. Let me know if you do.)
6. Jet Stream - John Gregory
7. Half Forgotten Daydreams
8. Jaguar - John Gregory
9. Life of Liesure - Keith Mansfield
10. Girl in a Sportscar - Alan Hawkshaw
11. Young Scene - Keith Mansfield (1968- MH: This one sounds like any
number of 60s-70s game show themes played sideways. Also a little
like TV sports music.)
12. It's All About the Co-Op Now - Alan Hawkshaw
13. Funky Fever - Alan Morehouse & His Bond Street Brigade
14. Shout About Pepsi - Denny Wright & the Hustlers (1974- MH: With
really cheezy female vocals. Did not come to my mind that this was ever
Pepsi music in the US. Maybe UK?)
15. Headhunter - Mandingo
16. Blarney's Stoned - Alan Hawkshaw (1972- MH: This was the theme
BBC-TV's DAVE ALLEN AT LARGE. It used to show on local PBS, mid-70s.
Irish guy who sat in a directors-type chair with a drink and told jokes.
Dave just passed away a month or so ago.)
17. Earthmen - Paddy Kingsland
18. I Feel the Earth Move - John Keating
19. Penthouse Suite - Syd Dale
20. Snake Pit - Mandingo
PLEASE, Identify any others that you can. (Their use in TV, ads, films,
etc.)
Every time one of these spams get's posted in any of the three PMPC/ Pop
Culture groups, I know all my yahoo group messages starts bouncing and I
have to go in and unbounce. Does anyone else have that happen after the
spam hits the group?
This is robotic SPAM. It doesn't seem to matter if I delete the email
and block the sender. It's just a program.
I am considering going to moderating new members. They will have to write
me an introduction to join. A spam robot won't be able to do that. I hate
to do so, as I know some members don't like to make contact, they just
like to join and read the files.
And I'll tell you, personal sites don't work. I don't know anone who's
listed on a personals site that has met anyone of value, if at all. I
think it's just all hype.
Hi Mark:
You can set it up as you suggest, or you can leave it as is but set
new members to moderating their message posts, "approve all
messages".  That way the first posts come to you only for approval,
and then when you detect its a 'real' person you can change them
from approve all messages.  When you spot its a spam bot you can
delete them.  Seems to work.
I'm in one of those 'all messages must be approved by the group
owner' and it's a real pain in the back side, as if I post Friday
night, my message won't be approved 'till Monday morning.
All my groups are set up, so new members are moderated. Usually after
the first couple messages, I take you off moderation. It all works
out very well.
Yes thats what I meant Billy.  Not to permanently moderate people's
messages, but just till the first one or two come in.  You quickly
see who is a real person posting and who is a bot posting spam, and
once i see a real message I go in and change their settings to allow
them to post.
I wouldnt want to have to read everyone's posts then ok them.  LOL
just thought, could you imagine doing that with all our posts in
Billybear trivia with it so busy, and setting it so you have to
approve them all? lol.
I went in and set all the groups to "moderate new members only."
So the messages are sent directly to me to read and forward back to the
group? Or do I have to go to the "pending messages" spot at the group
I found this pretty interesting and some trivia I never knew.- Dr. M
*_*_*
From: www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/13354.html
"Loulie Jean Norman, who for more than 50 years was considered the
most flawless studio soprano in the entertainment industry, passed
away on August 2. Star Trek fans may not recognize her name, but
they certainly know her voice as the soaring soprano in the theme of
the original Star Trek series. Her impressive range was also featured
in The Tokens' hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight.' In her distinguished
studio career she performed with numerous entertainers and musical
legends including Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Ray Charles, Bing
Crosby and Elvis Presley. It is her voice you hear in the film 'Porgy
and Bess' when Clara (played by Diahann Carroll) is singing. In
addition, her talents were evident in Disneyland's 'Haunted Mansion'
as the shrieking opera-singing 'Crazy Soprano Ghost' and in her
performances with Spike Jones and his Orchestra. She appeared as a
regular on comedy-variety shows hosted by Dean Martin, Carol Burnett
and Dinah Shore."
(Posting response to several groups)
(re: New "Sugar Sugar" remix in White Castle Ad)
I got this response AND the song from someone who read my post.
********************************************
Hi from Germany! Ron did not know the song also yet!
Ron does not cooperate in the song. Catrin
A friend of Ron ! my website: www.barrymanilow.de
********************************************
It's called: "Bump Spring 2005 - 17 - Beatfactory - Sugar, Sugar"
Many thanx to Catrin for responding to me.
That leads me to *this* inquirey:
"I'm Ronald McDonald and I'm Lovin' It."
Spring 2004, there was a short lived McDonalds commercial with a *great*
pop jingle that was based on the 2004 Justin Timberlake
song, "I'm Lovin' It." I was surprised it did not get more attention.
In the commercial, the lyrics were, "I'm Ronald McDonald and I'm
Lovin' It." Ronald was frolicking with kids and playing a rock guitar.
It was done *very much* in the style of a Ron Dante/Archies song.
I think it was briefly available on the McDonalds website. Again, I
wonder if Ron was involved or if the sound was indeed a "tribute?"
Here's a link to a page that has a description, picture and clip:
www.stayfreemagazine.org/archives/24/mcdonalds-commercials.html
But the clip link no longer seems to work.
An AdWeek page:  http://tinyurl.com/c5s6j
It seems to me I read it was briefly availbalb for upload
on the McDonalds website:
www.mcdonalds.com/corp/news/corppr/2003/cpr09232003.html
Can anyone find an MP3 of the "Ronald McDonald" version to post
to all or send to me by www.yousendit.com ???
I bet it's out there somewhere...
Many Thanx,
Dr. Mark
Hmmm. I think I'll defer to Ron himself. And Ron, thanx for answering.
Sounds like the first info I got, was not necessarily correct. Yet, the
song that I was sent sounded close to the ad. But admitedly not exactly
the same. I don't have a copy of the ad to compare. I know there must be
multiple remixes of "Sugar Sugar." Ron, if you haven't put yours out
(the commercial version), you should. It's very good.
Paperback Believer
I downloaded this as an MP3 some time ago. It's an AMAZING
mash-up of the two songs. Works so good, it's jaw-dropping.
Can't recall the MP3 link. Apparently there's a video version now.
I'd say to check it out.
