That's great that you got to see them! (I never did.)
Do you still have a copy of the concert review, and can you find it? I'd love
to read it.

want to give the band any more ink. However, I did listen many times
to both albums over the next 4 1/2 years and fell in love with their
music. With the advent of the web I looked for Pop Art but did not
find them until the date of my membership in this group. Thank God I
did find them. I hope all of their albums will be re-released on CDs

I can't recall if I ever confirmed Jeff's involvement in the latest SBH
release, The Big Sigh. YES, he is back in the band; YES, he is playing
guitar; and YES, you can tell when you listen to it. The new one is
great -- GET IT!!
Also, there's a band from Australia called The Lucksmiths that sound more
like Pop Art than any band I've heard. You can sample them here:
http://www.candlerecords.com.au/candle/bin/candlebands.cfm?bandName=lucks
miths
and here:
http://www.indiepages.com/matinee/sounds.html
Unfortunately, there aren't many songs from Naturaliste available for
sampling. That's their most recent full-length CD -- the only one of
theirs I have -- and it's the one with the most Pop Art sounding songs.
But on the second website above is "After the After Party", which is
pretty Pop Artsy. They also have a bit of a Smiths / Belle & Sebastian
vibe to them. Enjoy!

Hey all-
I just received word today that the 8th Smart Brown Handbag record, "The
Big Sigh", has been released and is now available from CD Baby here:
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/smartbrown2
There are 2-minute samples of all 12 songs on the CD Baby page and they
sound GREAT!!!
Also according to the CD Baby page, the big news is that Jeff Steinhart
is back in the band. It doesn't give any details about his
contributions, but I'm betting based on the samples that he is playing
GUITAR. If I'm right, it's his first time back on guitar since Snap
Crackle Pop Art was recorded in 1987. Either way, it sounds wonderful,
and I just placed my order for the CD.
ENJOY!!

Thanks for the kind words!
Getting them to reunite shouldn't be too hard, if they can find the time.
Three of them are brothers. One drummer's a cousin, another's still in
California. No idea what became of Tony, though.

You think Pop Art is ignored? I feel bad for Fields Laughing. It took
me until last month to even find out what their record was called, and I
had to get a copy to find out who was actually in the band. There's
virtually NO mention of them on the Internet, even though all members
went on to other bands. A shame.

Hey campers!
I just completed a major update to Ancient Art, the Unofficial Pop Art
Website.
The most important change is the new URL:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/planetmahers/popart
The old addresses will work for a while, and each page forwards to the
proper place on the new site, but I am planning to terminate my Prodigy
account in the coming months, so update your bookmarks now!
Aside from that, the discographical information has been expanded and
clarified, a couple of photos have been added to the gallery, the related
releases from the past couple of years have been added, the discussion
list information is now accurate, and the Fields Laughing page now has a
lot of information on the band and its three-track single release.
There are a few other changes -- check them out!

Yeah Yeah Yeah Review ->
SMART BROWN HANDBAG
Fast Friends
(Stonegarden)
Alright, so I've raved about David Steinhart before, and yes I maybe
going
on a bit about something that specifically makes me happy—great
artfully
crafted pop that owes a lot to The Smiths and R.E.M. circa 1986. But
things
ain't so
easily capsulized. If Steinhart was losing steam you bet it would show.
All
great intelligent songwriters do hit "slumps" or "lulls." Aimee Mann's
latest feels like her Goodbye Cruel World/Punch The Clock phase has
begun.
Here,
Steinhart takes the dilemma head on—unashamed and with impressive
results,
the triumphant opening track, not-so ironically titled "The Sixth Year
Slump," proves he's still moving forward and has yet to slow down. Slump,
my
ass. This 13-track indie pop manifesto is yet another trip through LA
heartbreak
for the bohemian in all of us over 30. For SBH fans, Steinhart still
sounds
like the Stipe/Costello-schooled singer-songwriter he's always been and
yes,
he's still singing about the trouble with "love" ("The sixth month slump
around the third year in" or "The future looms like a rainy day that
we've
been trying to sleep away"). If it weren't for his uncanny ability to pen
sharp enticing pop songs and get them on tape with life and vigor, one
might
say, "Enough already." But like anyone who can spin a wild yarn and dress
it
up with interesting embellishments, Steinhart has a gift. He also sounds
like he's truly still learning and growing. Music this heartfelt and
urgent
is
almost impossible to fake. Another brilliant offering.
—Pat Pierson
Campus Circle Magazine ->
A Remarkable indie pop trio whose talent is crafting blissful pop, sharp
melodies and intelligent lyrics. It all sounds like pretty simple stuff
unless you know how much work goes into each perfect piece. SBH's
seventh
effort is close to an hours worth of bright pop that any pop fan will
appreciate, A+.
