After the comic-book power metal of last year's thunderous "Beastwomen
From the Center of the Earth", our favorite God of fuckin' Thunder returns with
a more down n' dirty – though no less insane- rock n' roll record. For "Against
the World", Thor teamed up with Streetwalkin' Cheetah Frank Meyer and his
shitkicking cowpunk band Sweet Justice, and the result is a full-on, rockets
red glare spectacle of authentically American rock n' roll action. And yes, I
realize that Thor is Canadian, never mind a Canadian who's based his career
on a character from Norse mythology, but I'm telling you, this album is the
perfect summertime soundtrack for eating hot dogs, going to the drag races,
and beatin' up Commies. Thor digs all the way back to his late 70's glam-pop
days for Dolls-y, tambourine shaking rave-ups like "Creature Feature" and the
slinky "Glimmer", and even further back for the 60's fuzz-punk sorority
shakedown "Hard to Cry". There's a snaky, Iggy-esque ballad ("Turn to Blue"),
a fire-belching biker metal stomper or two ("Easy Woman", and the storming
title track), and an amazing, infectious 50's style doo-wop (!) rocker, "Gonna
Have A Hard Time". There's all kinds of great rock n' roll here, and even
though it flails wildly from one side of the rock spectrum to another, none of
it
sounds forced. This is mostly because Thor is immortal, but also because
Sweet Justice is a white-hot band who seamlessly slip from one genre to
another at the whims of their muscle-bound boss like he's paying `em double
overtime. Sure, it's an oddball pairing, but so was Felix and Oscar, and that
turned out pretty great, right? Same thing here. This is easily the most fun
rock
n' roll superhero come-back album since Billy Idol's "Devil's Playground", and
Billy can't even bend steel bars with his bare hands.  --Sleazegrinder/Classic

The September It-News for It-Kids

1. Now avalable for you consumption is the debut UNKNOWN
INSTRUCTORS (w/Joe Baiza, Jack Brewer, George Hurley, Dan McGuire,
and Mike Watt): "The Way Things Work" CD, shipping September 20. 
Amazing free jazz-agit prog-beat poetry rock.
Combining elements of avant-garde jazz, spoken word hip-hop, punk, post-
rock, and funk comes Unknown Instructors and their debut The Way Things
Work. This is one of those CD's that after a few listens you are left shaking
your head saying "what was that all about?", yet, you are compelled to hit the
replay button. I've honestly never heard anything like this. Imagine a head on
collission between Captain Beefheart, Funkadelic, Miles Davis, MC5, and the
Stooges...well, sort of. There's plenty of savage wah-wah laced guitar work
from Joe Baiza that has elements of Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Hazel, and Mike
Stern, to go along with groovy rhythm work and the spoken word rants & raps
of Dan McGuire, who also adds some sax here and there. Just when you get
lulled into a jazzy trance the band crashes back with some ferocious punk/
rock/funk hybrid, yet the vibe overall is very free-form and avant-garde
throughout. The weird thing is as much as I use the genres to describe the
style of this band, it really doesn't do them justice, as they fit into none of
those
categories. Puzzling, I know.
Is the music of Unknown Instructors easy to digest? No. Is is easy to ignore?
Again, no. This is not something that you can just pop into your CD player any
old time. These guys have a lyrical message to get across, and an attitude
that they want to convey musically as well. Think angry poetry with some
venemous yet jazzy musical accompaniment. After about a half-dozen listens
I'm still not sure about this CD, but damn if it doesn't keep intriguing me
nontheless. If you are ready for something completely different, check this

Thanks to all for attending ArthurBall in Los Angeles.  I was there Saturday
night and saw
the first ever Unknown Instructors gig in front of a huge crowd.  An amazing
fest not to be
missed next time around.  The band is wrapping up final mastering of the new

1. Well, it's been awhile since we reported to our loyal listeners, and we have
tons of stuff
to report, so here goes:

--THOR is on tour!  Starting in Kelowna, BC, Canada on June 30, the band will be
making
it's way throughout the United States this summer.  All the dates are listed
below and
updates will appear on the Smog Veil site.  Zolar X will share the stage in
select cities.
THOR's latest, 'Devastation of Musculation' is in stores July 25, but you can
pre-order now
from Smog Veil.  We also have nifty new shirts with the CD artwork.  The CD, by
the way, is
an enhanced jobber, with a video for the song 'Release The Beast'.  Besides
that, Synapse
Films is doing a DVD release for 'RockNRoll Nightmare', and Smog Veil will be
releasing the
soundtrack through iTunes, all on June 27.  We'll also be releasing two more
videos from

began in
1985 with guitarist Joe Sims (the only member to be featured on all Axemaster
releases),
vocalist/bassist Christopher Michael, and drummer Brian Henderson. Combining
power
metal, thrash and dark imagery, they were also featured on the compilation
shaped picture
record titled 'Metalgon' and in the comedy/horror movie 'Killer Nerd'. This
release
compiles the best early years stuff that's long out of print. The band has
reformed, expect
new stuff soon!
