The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

Dick Dale: King of the Surf Guitar
Saturday, August 4
8:00 PM; Fleischmann Auditorium
"The King of the Surf Guitar," Dick Dale single handedly created the
surfing sound in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A true surfer who
surfed sun up to sundown, he has always explained his sound as a
sonic representation of the waves and the thrill of surfing.
One reason the surf culture developed its identity - and its musical
sound - was the screening of popular movies like "Gidget," that were
based on the free spirited beach culture. Dick Dale, The Beach Boys,
Surfaris, and others gave Americans a California sound that swept
the nation.
Following the rediscovery of "Misirlou" for the movie Pulp Fiction,
Dale's career was rejuvenated and he has continued to record new
material and tirelessly pursue a grueling tour schedule. Members
$28.00; Non-members $32.00.
Meet Dick Dale at an exclusive post performance reception! Members
$40; Non-members $60 (includes the concert). Limited tickets
available. To make reservations for the reception, call
805.682.4711, ext. 170.
