In my office/computer room at home now I put in an Audigy 2 and an
Altec Lansing 6 speaker set up, all quite cheap, actually. And I got
the new WinDVD Platinum, which has software based DTS as well as DD
5.1, so I now have DD 5.1 and DTS and DVD-Audio in this nice little
space. I hooked a couch/day-bed behind my desk chair so family can
watch movies. I find the CMSS synthesized surround to be quite nice
so I hooked up to the Audigy a VCR (watch the image on composite
through a TV card but line in the sound to the Audigy for surround),
a reel-to-reel, a cassette deck and..... and 8-track player. Haven't
got around to a truntable yet. Anyway, it's all very pleasant.
Really love DVD-Audio now. In one splurge I got:
Randy Newman - Little Criminals
Queen - Night at the Opera, The Game
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
Zappa - Halloween
The Pogues - Streams of Whiskey (live in Sqitzerland 1981)
These are all quite good, especially the Queen ones. And it's nice I
can finally hear the Greatest Hits II DVD in 96/24.
Also been buying plenty of DTS and DD 5.1 DVD's, including some
unexpected progrock by Gong, Deep Purple, Ozric Tentacles and even
Van der Graaf Generator performing the _Pawn Hearts_ album live in
the studio. Got the Police hits DVD with the DTS mix.
And, to top it all off, I found a vinyl QS Santana _Abraxas_ which
decodes as well or better than any other quad LP I have (considering
my decoder is a Sanyo and nowhere near up to snuff).
Anyway, it's interesting that I managed to live long enough that I
can buy quad stuff all over the place, even at the supermarket, and
that I can even download quad, like the new Peter Gabriel album UP,
which was clearly made for surround and makes no sense in stereo
version, IMO.
