Re: What is the definitive Quad mix - Discrete or Matrix?

Yes and no. I have an audigy 2 platinum card in my home office
computer which enables me to play DVD-A's as DVD-A's, and I have
some decent 5.1 speakers hooked up. I also in the office have r2r,
cassette, 8-track, VHS DVD and turntable all hooked up to the sound
card so I can matrix out to 5.1 from anything, also for recording
and cleaning up various stereo source material for CD burning, and
get rid of snap, crackle, pop and hiss. I can also make Dolby
surround CD's from matrixed stereo stuff, which I've been
experimenting with, it depends on getting the right source material.
In my living room with the 6.1 speakers, I can listen to the DD5.1,
DTS, and or PCM content on DVD-A's (bizarre fact, some of those
Silverline DVD-A's sound like total crap in DVD-A but sort of
acceptable in DD5.1), which for some of them really ain't bad. The
ELP Brain Salad DD5.1 tracks are rich sounding, and the Randy Newman
Little Criminals in DTS is real crisp and nice, but not as warm and
rich as the DVD-A, of course. Machine Head rocks in any format.
I still haven't found a copy of that new Porcupine Tree DVD-A,
though, which I hear is fantastic. But I have collected some of the
classic DVD-A's, which I love. Can't wait for that Zappa one from
the Roxy 1974 shows.
