I've found some really good quad 8-tracks at the local thrift stores, but
I hate to say, I hardly see any 8-tracks at all any more, and very few
quad ones. Strangly, just before one of the few remaining local thrift
stores closed, a couple 8-tracks finally showed up (they hadn't had any
until that point, and sure enough, I got a couple Q8s!)

I *can* help you with the Technics, I have one, although mine is a
Panasonic, it's the same model. I have some info about it on my web site,
http://www.rdrop.com/~dano/tunes/quad/equipment.html, but basicly the deck
plays quad, and records only in 2 channel stereo. It has two VU meters on
the front channels. It's also a little different in that it doesn't look
for the notch in the tape like the typical Q8 deck, but instead has a
control on the front for 2ch/quad. This would be nice if you ever end up
recording quad tapes on plain 2 channel blanks. Otherwise, my deck sounds
pretty good and seems like a good choice for playback. I haven't
recorded anything on it, I have a Realistic TR-801 that I've used for all
my 2ch recording. Hope that helps.
