[Quadraphonic Quad] Re: Has anyone tried recording quad...

Haven't heard that. Still got my trusty old grey WB Q8 copy of that
with massive hiss, like the mastering was way too low. Can't
remember what the stereo mix sounds like. :-) I do remember the quad
mix is about 5 times better than the stereo, though.

I've heard a few different dts conversions of the Q8 (never heard a
convert from QS vinyl, though) and some are good and some are awful.
I like a nice unadorned Q8 of it, which sounds so much more intimate
than the stereo mix, which is a bit brash.

What was your source and what did you do to it? I've heard the US
and UK Q8's, but usually I either listen to the SACD or my old first
US release Capitol CD when they released the quad instead of the
stereo, by mistake. I listen to that in PLII out to 6.1. I find it
nice and smooth. Similarly I refuse to give up listening to Jeff
Beck Blow by Blow in stereo put through PLII to 6.1 just because I
have the SACD. I find that stereo -> PLII opens up in a special way.
Lately my main rotations are the DVD-A of Deadwing by Porky Tree and
that new Zappa DVD-A. My Toshiba Universal player, which I had
picked up for $125 had stopped recognizing DVD-A's for some reason,
but they replaced it under warranty with no problem and I just got
it back, so I'm kind of going berserk on DVD-A for a bit. Oh, and
also listening to a lot of weird DTS stuff from Norwegian radio,
which seems determined to outweird the Swedes, some sort of bizarre
nordic competitive thing. I'm waiting for the Danes and Icelanders
to jump in and then then Finns to come out of left field. It's all
good, IMO. Oh, and that Norwegian Hayd symphony is quite tasty,
while on the subject. I would love to see more radio stations put
out classical dts stuff on the net.
