In my experience, the JVC 4DD-5 is the best
consumer demodulator ever offered to the public. The newer
designs made by all the manufacturers included many
"band-aids" to try to reduce the noise contributed by the
carrier channel. Toward this end, these units all had a
considerably reduced audio bandwidth in the demodulated
difference channels. This does, indeed, reduce the carrier
noise, but it also reduces the separation at high
frequencies and also results in a duller overall sound. The
Technics control that attempts to reduce crosstalk in the
carrier channels was a good thought, but I don't remember
that it ever resulted in any audible improvement.

Crosstalk in the carrier channels causes a unique type of
distortion with CD-4 records that JVC called "Type II". This
really is the same type of phenomenon as multipath or
co-channel interference in FM radio reception (remember that
the carriers are frequency modulated). In CD-4
playback, the result is a low-frequency distortion that
sounds rather like farting (pardon my French). This is
easily distinguished from the more common "Type I"
distortion which is the higher frequency ripping sound
associated with temporary loss of the carrier(s). Type II
distortion can be caused by any part of the playback chain
that causes too much crosstalk (lack of separation)
between the two carriers (left and right). Some
demodulators are poorly designed and suffer a lot of this.
Beyond that, cartridges and/or styli are the next most
common culprits. So this brings up a caveat to anyone
who would rebuild or redesign their demodulators: Be
careful with the lead dress of the wires flying around
inside the unit. I know from experience that what seems
like an innocuous placement of wiring inside a
demodulator can result in crosstalk at the supersonic carrier
frequencies which will cause Type II distortion.

So
far as how you would set the carrier crosstalk
canceller control in the Technics, I would suggest that you
probably need a special test record that has a track with
carrier recorded only on the left side and another track
with carrier only on the right. You would use an
oscilloscope to monitor one or two test points in the
demodulator, and you would adjust for minimum carrier when
there wasn't supposed to be any on the record. This
procedure is necessary because the cancellation circuit is
intended to cancel out crosstalk originating in any part
of the playback chain, including the cartridge as it
plays a record. So just using a signal generator won't
get the job done. I can't actually remember if
Technics provided such a special test record for this
purpose. In lieu of that, if you have a record that
exhibits Type II distortion, you can experiment with this
control to see if you can improve this problem. As I said
earlier, I don't remember noticing that this control
actually did much in the SH-405s that I played
with.

Greg Bogantz
gbogantz@...

So I finally took the plunge and got a Denon
receiver with DPL-II. Following wizardofohm's suggestions,
I set the DPL-II mode to "Music", turned Panorama
off, set the front width to turn off the center
channel and cranked the Dimension so all four speakers
are at the same level.

I *like* what I hear
when playing back QS, though I don't have any real way
to tell if what I'm hearing is *accurate*. I don't
hear the same constant, obvious separation that I get
from an SQ recording through the Tate, but of course I
also don't get any artifacting. There are occasional
moments of obvious quadraphonicness, though in general it
seems to provide more of a sense of constant
envelopment rather than ping-ponging. Are QS recordings
generally just more conservative in that regard due to the
recording engineers' understanding of the 1970s decoder
deficiencies?

My real question is: How do I go about getting the
test CD I've heard mentioned here before?

Checking various sites about DVD-A doesn't show
anything new coming for the next months. Is DVD-A going
where original DTS CD are now - aka a dead
market?
Well, i liked DVD-A... it is possible from the start to
listen the surround mix with a normal dvd DD player,
until the prices of DVD-A players cool down. Now
gottawait for the Universal Player that handle SACD too.

That's funny, I was just thinking that it looks
like DVD-A titles are starting to take off! Check out
DVDPlanet.com and use their "quick search" for "dvd-audio".
There aren't oodles of new releases, but there are more
coming out now than I've seen in the past, including
titles from Bjork (whoo-hoo!), Barenaked Ladies,
Fabulous Thunderbirds, and some others that don't really
float my boat.

I am totally enthralled with
DVD-Audio. It's too bad it has a competing format... or
maybe it's too bad that SACD has a competing format...
whichever, it would sure be nicer if there were a single
multi-channel high resolution digital format instead of these
darn competing formats... that's pretty much been the
only constant in the evolution of media; there are
always competing formats! Argh!

Oh, by the way,
it looks like I'm getting something resembling my
life put back together after a couple months in limbo.
Basically, lots of other priorities pushing aside my
hobbies, but it's good to be back. I've missed you guys!

I don't think it will matter which format wins if
the players will play both. They might can even
coexist, each record label choosing which they wish to
use. The important thing is that surround music wins
acceptance. We have the advantage this time in that home
theater has wedged the doors open, and they can't be
completely closed again. Long live surround sound!

By
the way, Greg is right about the JVC 4DD5, It is a
very fine demodulator. I have two of them and desire
no other. I once had a chance to play with an SH400,
but I didn't think it sounded as good as my 4DD5.
However, it has a fancy look to it and lots of
adjustments. The 4DD5 just doesn't need them.

The

there to last a while. Be sure and read my next post
