Ten Years After, Santana, Kristofferson, Gato Barbieri, Alice
Coltrane, and lots of classical, especially those Angels and the
Angels that were done at 45 RPM. Also Queen II, Synergy, ELP - Brain
Salad Surgery.
Oh, and I find old Passport albums matrix out real well, I think they
might have been originally in quad when released in Germany and were
just released as regular stereo in US even though they were the same
as the German quad releases? Not sure, sounds like it, though...
Queen ll??? Brain Salad Surgery??? I didn't know those were released in quad.
Are they? That might seem like a silly question since you just said you were
listening to them, but I'm just trying to make sure.
I don't have a quad system, but I have a source who converted 40 quad albums to
CD for me. The CDs give me the quad effect on my surround sound system.
I really like The Moody Blues in quad. Better than the 5.1 versions I have of
The Moody Blues, as a matter of fact.

Yes, the commercial LP release of Brain Salad Surgery was in quad. I
have the DVD-A release and the mixes are very close. Jerusalem is a
bit more spacious on the DVD-A and the bass much richer but the rest
of the album is pretty close.
As for Queen II, that's sort of a legend. Was it a quad mix released
as steroe? Or was it just an interesting feat of engineering which
naturally matrixes out in a spacious manner? Hard to say, good
arguments on either side. IAE, it sounds great if you have the
original vinyl and run through a quad decoder or Dolby PLII.
Another one that is not quad but matrixes out extremely well is
Zappa's Uncle Meat, BTW
There were quite a lot of albums that were quad mixes, though, that
were not marked as such on the albums. Brain Salad Surger a classic
one, of course. But many others. Fireballet's first album. The first
few Synergy albums......

I do indeed know what you mean. in my case I would rather listen to
the quad mix of DSotM matrixed out to 4 channels than the discreet 4
channel Q8 or the discreet 5.1 SACD. Just warmer, I think.

Gosh, I've had Queen II since its release and have never listened to it
through an SQ decoder until now! I am listening to it as I type.
It is incredible!
Wait a minute. It's on Elektra. Let me see if... darn. Nope, no carrier.

Finally got a copy of my fave Chicago album on Quad LP, Chicago VII. That
completes the collection too, of all their albums available in Quad. 150 bucks
on ebay.... Coverted it to DTS. Loving it!

I know what you are experiencing. And I am very glad. Indeed, glad you
checked out Queen 1, as well, since that album does really matrix out
nicely. If pressed to the wall, I believe that II is actually a quad
mix (as per the legend) and I is just a really fine piece of
engineering with some extra out-of-phase action that makes it matrix
nicely. It is possible, I suppose, that they are both just superbly
engineered stereo mixes based on the kind of 60s studio wizardry stuff
that matrixes out nicely. It is highly unlikely that they are both
quad mixes, so I'll stick with my unconfirmed belief that I is a
well-engineered album that matrixes nicely and II is an unofficial
quad release. Either way, it's some good listening, there. It all just
leaps out and grabs you. Very 3D.

Gentlmen, This is all great to hear. I have a question regarding Queen I and
Queen II. Do you know if those LPs can be recorded to DTS and maintain the quad
effect?
Another question I have is, do you guys know of any other albums that are not
quad releases, but have a quadraphonic sound? Since we are on the subject of
Queen, I'm really curious to know if Sheer Heart Attack offers quad sound. That
is my favorite Queen album, and I like it in stereo. I imagine I would love it
in quad.

Yes, if someone had the same equipment used for transferring a quad LP
to DTS and did the exact same thing with the commercial stereo
releases of Queen I and II all that glorious surround action would be
there. A Tate would be best, but even just using Dolby PL II would
work well, even if it were just doing it software only, like in Adobe
Audition. I'm surprised that no one, to my knowledge, has seen fit to
do this yet. I don't know if the CD releases would work, but I see no
reason why they wouldn't I have been fine with just the original vinyl
through a decoder for many years and saw no need to do it for my own
uses, but it would be a good idea if somebody did.
Sheer Heart Attack sounds OK through a decoder but it does not sound
like a quad mix. You could do an acceptable upmix of it, but it would
not be IMO anywhere near as three dimensional as Queen I and II.

In answer to the question of other stereo albums that sound good in quad, you
kind of have to just try them and see if there were enough phase relationship
differences when the album was recorded to make some of the material appear
in the back channels.
Elektra from the late sixties, early seventies seems to have particularly
recorded rock groups well then with spacious sonics and this lends itself well
to
quadraphonic decoding.
Another pretty good one I have is the Crabby Appleton album from 1970. It was
already really good in stereo and an SQ decoder just makes it all the better
with congas and other percussion (especially) appearing in the back.
Another is "Be Yourself Tonight" by the Eurythmics. Although a later album on
RCA, there's a lot going on in the back with a decoder.
Also, on the QuadraphonicQuad forum site, there is a forum that lists and
discusses stereo records that cound good in quad.

As a general rule, well made 60's albums, and anything with lots of
percussion or electronics seems to do well. Many, many strictly stereo
albums matrix out better than many of the "offical" quad releases.
Once you have a decoder, a world of adventure awaits!

heh I bet all those 'ping-pong' lounge albums from the 60s designed
to show off stereo would sound pretty weird. Try some Enoch Light
albums recorded on 35mm film. Actually come to think of it some of
those were quad releases.

I own a bunch of Enoch Light quad LPs and if you promise not to tell
anyone I said this, they sound fantastic, very very discrete sounding
for vinyl. Very 3D. Wild arrangements, too. EL's arrangement of "What
the world needs now is love sweet love" sounds like everyone in the
band just ate a handfull of goofballs. It totally forgets the
sentiment of the song and pushes the melody and beat to somewhere
3/4's of the way up a 14 foot wall. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The Enoch Lights are indeed a guilty pleasure, especially the Q4's and
Cd-4's. Ken, shoot me an email if you get a chance.
