Dear all,
I'd like to share with you an important message written by piano
roll
collector Robert Perry on another ragtime newgroup; it's about the
Joplin lost piano roll of "Pleasant Moments", that Robert recently
found. Here's what Robert Perry wrote:
"I'm thrilled to announce that I have found a copy of Connorized
#10319, 'Pleasant Moments', composed and played by Joplin. This is
the
first known copy to have ever been found, so it's particularly
exciting.
The roll is interesting for two reasons:
1) There are ocasionally departures from the printed score for
embellishments.
2) The performance contains two major mistakes, which are repeated
throughout the roll.
You'll all be aware of my sceptism that these are accurate
reflections
of Joplin's playing at the time, however there is little doubt that
he
did have SOMETHING to do with these rolls (as per Connorized's press
release announcing they'd engaged his services). As the only non-rag
roll he did, this one's of special historical interest.
The roll has been scanned, punch matrix reconstructed, and a copy
perforated, and recorded to mp3 format in England by a virtuoso
pianolist, adding dynamics and tempo variations to make the roll
more
human sounding. I think he's succeeded remarkably well.
