Dear all,
I'm new to this group.
My name's Luigi Ranalli and I'm a Ragtime music lover from Milan,

Hi all.
I have a new rag written entitled "The Newfoundlander's Rag" (I'm a
Newfie), and would really like to have it evaluated. It appears that
only the Moderators can post files here, so anybody wishing to hear
the piece for the pleasure, or to give an assessment can write to me
at "ragtime_fanatic@...".

If you haven't already done so, check out www.rtpress.com, although
not really a large scale publishing company by any sense of the word.
The publisher, Sue Keller, on her site says that she uses Finale, and
honestly, if you have the patience to learn Finale, it makes great
scores, and once learned, is actually quite easy to use.
Although I only have one piece composed, arranged and "published,"
(numerous others in the works) I intend on doing what the other reply
to this topic said, that being doing it myself. Once finished on
Finale, I am going to go to a local print shop (Kinkos or QuikPrint or
something) and have them do up a fancy cover for me, and have it
looking all nice.
I hope to have a small "songbook" to my own credit this year...

Hi. My name is John Remmers and I've been a ragtime piano enthusiast
since the 1970's. I perform the music of such classic ragtime
composers as Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, James Scott, and Charles L.
Johnson. I attend and perform at several ragtime festivals around the
United States every year, so if you do the same, you've probably met
me. My next appearance will be at the Eau Claire Ragtime Festival in
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, January 13-15 2006. You can find more
information about me, and listen to some samples of my piano playing,
at my website: http://jremmers.org .
I am thinking about playing the Russian Rag (the rag version of
Rachmaninoff's (sp?) C# Minor Prelude) in a recital along with the
prelude.
Can anyone help me with interpretation? Should I swing all of the
16ths, none of them, only in particular situations? ANy advice on
this or other aspects of the piece would be appreciated.

It's extremely unlikely that you'll find someone to
publish your music. Most of us publish the music
ourselves. Just put the music to good notation and
print them yourself, with a nice heavy-paper cover
(and back) design, with a looped comb binder. Almost
all the music I see at ragtime festivals (there's a
whole lot!) is self published.

Hi all -
I am new to this group and have been a fan of ragtime for years. I
have actually composed 3 rags that I would like to look at getting
published. Can anyone give me some names of publishers who might
handle rags?
I think they are a lot of fun, and can also be used for teaching
purposes. All are copyrighted. I would rate their difficulty as
follows:
Blueberry Cheese Cake Walk: moderate
Tennis Shoe Two-Step: advanced
Shmatutti-Frutti: moderately advanced
On a related note: has anyone self-published any compositions? How
hard is that?
Thanks - I look forward to your feedback....!

Hi, Paul,
Thanks! Do you have midis of your playing online for people to listen
to? Do you improvise while you play? Which are your favorite rags
and which do you find most difficult or easiest to master? Maple
Leaf, Swipesy, and Harmony Club Waltz are three of my favorites. My
husband can play a little ragtime on the piano and thinks The
Entertainer is the most difficult and Maple Leaf is not quite as
difficult. Can you play stride? I don't remember if I already asked
you that. Thanks. :)

Hello Mara,
Where to begin?? I have played for well over 17 years. I took lessons for well
over 12 of those years and minored in music in college. I have played rag for
well over 10, as I find it so very challenging. It is something that you really
have to have lots of stanima for. :) I read music, as well as can usualy pick
up things that I hear as I have played so long. Ever watch the old re-runs of
Lawence Welk? There is woman by the name of Joann Castle. If you ever get the
chance to view this, you can see first hand. She is really good. She is a
personal friend of mine, and I am not sure as to where you are from, but she
plays regularly in Branson Mo. I think that she has a web site. www.joanncastle
that you can go in, and she has samples of her music. THere are many other
artists as well such as Scott Joplin, and so there are some sources for you that
you might look into as far as testing the waters. I do not play classical as I
had to do this when coming up, and not really into the
classical scene, but love jazz and rag. Yes, there is tons of theory, but as
with anything, its not all that difficult, but rather as viewed as a receipe or
puzzle, and when learned, is like a secret code. There are many players that
have little to just mere basics in theory as most find it very boring.
Well, hope this helps a little, I enjoy hearing from you and should you have
other questions, just drop me a note.

I have played this type of music for well over 15 years now, and its
alot of work, but alot of fun as well. If you will, tell me what
exactly experience you have with music-playing the piano, so that I
may give you a clearer picture and hopefully anser any questions that
you might have.
Hi! I don't really have any piano experience yet and have just
recently acquired a piano and may be able to afford lessons soon. I
took clarinet lessons when I was a kid for a couple of years, so I
can read music a little, but have forgotten a lot of it in the
intervening time. I am just becoming interested in it again and I am
especially fond of ragtime, though from others I've heard it is very
challenging to play. What do you enjoy playing most? Do you play a
lot of classical? Do you find it easier or more difficult than
ragtime? Do you play by ear or sight read well? If you do both, do
you do one better than the other? I've heard that people generally do
one or the other well, not usually both, though I'm sure there must
be exceptions.
Any other experiences you'd like to share, I'd love to hear about too.
Did you acquire a lot of music theory background before you began to
play?
Thanks,
Mara

Hi, Paul,
Bill Edwards has some lovely piano ragtime on his website that you can
download and listen to on your computer or you can purchase in CD form.
His site is very entertaining and informative and he has a lot of links
to other excellent sites with ragtime midi files.

Do most or all of you here play piano? I don't know how to play
(yet) and I've just recently become interested in learning. I'm
curious to know if you all find sight reading easier or harder than
playing by ear. Do you play primarily ragtime? Do you think it's
more challenging than modern music or classical? My husband took
piano lessons as a child and he seems to find Joplin pretty
challenging, but fun.
I've been browsing sites to learn more about ragtime, as I'm not
quite clear on what defines a piece as ragtime. I visited a site
which has a midi file that is partly syncopated, partly not, so that
you can get a feel for the difference--and I could notice a
difference, but I couldn't quite understand what the difference was
(because I do not know very much about music yet). Do you think a
course on music theory is a good investment for someone prior to
taking music lessons? Is it better to wait until you've started
lessons?
I try to research subjects I'm interested in on my own but sometimes
you can learn more by asking the experts. I'd like to hear about all
of your experiences with learning and playing, what you find easy,
what you find difficult, etc. Thanks for any advice.
