Re: [ray_conniff] the "conniff sound" through the years re variability

Hi Pete,

I guess it's difficult to say for sure how much Ray interfered in the final
mixing of his latest recordings, however, as I have the videos of these
recording sessions , one thing I can say: He was always listening to everything
that was recorded beside the engineer, pushing buttons, lowering the sound, etc.
So, I think there's no doubt that all of his records had the final sound
approved by him.

Maybe the engineer convinced him that the kind of recording used e.g. in
"40th Anniversary" album (which I definitely don't like in terms of sound) was
more
contemporary than the louder/clearer sound of his early recordings and as Ray
was always worried about his sound getting dated he was convinced and gave Dick
Bogert his OK. I guess only DB could tell us exactly what happenned.

Best,
Jorge

hello.

i just finished reading the thread of many months ago in which
discussion board members commented on how older/newer recordings
sounded better/worse, etc. etc.

as mentioned in the thread, recording technology during ray's early
ascent was advancing at a tremendous pace, and it is my contention
that ray availed himself (along with his engineer) of the cutting-edge
mics, boards, and so forth of the time. ray was very saavy sound-wise
and knew studio and recording techniques.

my comment has to do with the presence of quality or lack thereof
solely to the engineer or to the producer of the recordings:

did not maestro conniff himself (who set the highest of standards for
his unique sound) exercise creative control during the mix-downs???
did not ray, like any recording artist, sit in the control room and
guide the engineers with how HE wanted the track levels set, how he
wanted to emphasize or de-emphasize instruments and voices???

my feeling is that ray himself either created his sound for each
recording as he wished it...and yes, there was experimentation not
totally divorced from marketing concerns...or he for whatever reason
he passed the responsibility to someone else. but, ultimately, the
final sound was his to own.

personally, i enjoyed listening to ray's new releases...it was
frequently a pleasant surprise to see what new recording/mixing trick
was in store...how he tweaked the conniff sound once again to keep it
fresh and intriguing.

i would've loved to be a fly on the wall during the post-production
phase of the recordings to see how much and in what manner ray
controlled his "product" and how much control was firmly in the lap of
columbia back then.

my thoughts.
