Got the autographed advance-ordered copy in the mail a week and some
ago, but hadn't had a chance to give it a good listen till earlier
today, but finally the opportunity - in the form of an extended drive
- presented itself for me to concentrate on it.
First thoughts - I love it, and it has a pretty high Rheostatics-feel
quotient - but I keep expecting it to haul off and RAWK for a bit, and
the band seems to... just... not... very much. That's the worst I can
say about it though - and really, there are a lot of turns of phrase
that make me smile. "This song ain't any good. It was laughed at by a
friend. I played it for my children, but they were grown up by the
end." I can just see the kids, aged and sapped of vitality, filled
with regret and sore wisdom by this song that ain't any good. I have
a friend who does a lot of acoustic shows - I'm gonna suggest he learn
this one.
Terrorize Me Now, How Zeke Roberts Died and the title track are just
towering; gotta spend some quality time with the lyrics. (Minor
bitch: a number of typos in the booklet, and whose damn idea was it in
the first place to set them in paragraphs/prose format rather than in
lines of verse that would have made it so much easier to read?)
