TIME OUT!

Once wholesome halftime shows are now lurid exercises of
exhibitionism
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 02/3/06
BY CHRIS JORDAN
GANNETT NEW JERSEY
Our decency as a nation was severely corrupted on Jan. 4, and we
don't have Britney Spears, Eminem or Janet Jackson to blame.

The culprit this year is the entire University of Southern
California marching band. Yes, the same Trojan band that played on
Fleetwood Mac's abysmal freak-out of a song, "Tusk," in 1979, has
gone over the edge.

During the halftime show of the Rose Bowl, one of the top-rated
football games of the year, the band members, while performing a
medley of Michael Jackson songs, collectively grabbed their crotches.

Since when did a college football halftime show — once the epitome
of wholesome entertainment and sporting grandeur — become a lurid
exercise of exhibitionism?

At 10:38 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, Jan. 4.

Maybe other school bands have been grabbing their crotches, but I
must have missed it. They didn't grab themselves during "Drumline,"
did they? And what was the USC band leader trying to convey by
making all these 18- to 21-year-olds grab their crotches in their
marching uniforms? Is this to suggest that the USC band plays so
well that band members just can't control themselves? A lot of
performers grab themselves these days — Michael Jackson, Eminem,
porn stars — but isn't it really a bit much to see it from the USC
marching band during the Rose Bowl halftime show? Speaking of
football and crotches . . .

The National Football League recently announced that it would be
ending its sponsorship deal with the makers of Levitra, an erectile
dysfunction medication. This comes after several years worth of
suggestive Super Bowl ads for the product. However, it was not
clear, according to an Associated Press report, if the NFL would
accept ads from other ED medication companies during the Super Bowl,
which takes place Sunday in Detroit.

It seems the NFL hasn't recovered from the hangover induced by Janet
Jackson's topless performance during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime
show. Pop pipsqueak Justin Timberlake pulled off her top to reveal
her right breast during a song. There was outrage across the country
over the nudity, but oddly, few remarked upon the acted-out sexual
assault scenario between Jackson and Timberlake that caused it.
Nudity: bad. Sexual assault: entertainment.

At this year's Super Bowl, the Rolling Stones are set to perform
during halftime. Organizers, tempting a class-action, age-
discrimination lawsuit from old Stones fans — or a "Logan's Run"
flashback — initially banned those 45 and older from viewing the
Stones from the field. It was too strenuous for the old-timers, the
NFL said. The league relented after critics pointed out that the
Stones themselves are in their 60s.

There was a time when the Stones were considered dangerous — perhaps
as dangerous as Janet Jackson's right breast. The NFL is hoping
they're still edgy enough to keep people watching at halftime. It's
called maximizing profit potential, and it's a game the NFL plays
very well.

THE SUPER BOWL PITTSBURGH STEELERS AND SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

WHEN: 6 p.m. Sunday

HALFTIME HEADLINERS: The Rolling Stones

WHERE: ABC, Channels 6 and 7

Urban's a star in his own right

San Antonio Express-News

Last year was great for Keith Urban, and 2006 is shaping up nicely,
too — not just for the songs but for the music he may be making with
a certain actress.

Sure, there were landmarks — his third solo album, "Be Here," just
topped the 3 million sales mark. The single "Better Life" became his
seventh No. 1 hit, and the current song, "Tonight I Wanna Cry," just
broke the Billboard country Top 10.

The numerous honors included two from the Academy of Country Music —
male vocalist and album of the year — and two from the Country Music
Association — his second consecutive award as male vocalist and his
first entertainer of the year award.

After his two concerts at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo on
Saturday, he's off to the Grammy Awards on Wednesday to see if he
won for best male country vocal performance.

But do a Google search on "Keith Urban" and "Nicole Kidman," and
you'll get around half a million hits reinforcing the old saw that
any publicity is good publicity, and this one is so juicy it's
selling tons of ink for the gossip press, including People, which
named him one of the sexiest men alive.

Where: San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, AT&T Center, East Houston
Street at SBC Center Parkway
When: At the end of Saturday's rodeo sessions, which begin at 1 and
7:30 p.m.

Urban, the story goes, is romantically linked to Kidman, one of
Hollywood's hottest stars, who is an Academy Award winner.
While music moguls drool when country artists cross over to the pop
charts for new hits, a wider fan base and more sales, they must be
downright frothing over the possibilities of publicity over a
cinematic romance.

Reports are rampant about Urban and Kidman being spotted making out,
riding a motorcycle together and how she's wearing a 3.5-carat
diamond engagement ring. There also are tales about how she told him
off and ended their March wedding plans, citing doubts about whether
he's changed his womanizing ways.

They both, of course, deny they're romantically involved.

But there's no denying Urban is fast becoming one of the top stars
in country music through hard work, talent, a dazzling live
performance and a drive that took him from being an Australian farm
boy to stardom on two continents.

It all started when Urban was about 6 and he began listening to his
parents' records — Don Williams, Glen Campbell, Charley Pride and
Dolly Parton.

He learned to play guitar, too, and by age 8 he was winning talent
shows. At 12, he was gigging with his own band. By 15, he quit
school, hit the road and learning new licks from Dire Straits' Mark
Knopfler and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham.

In 1990, he recorded his first solo album and scored No. 1 country
hits in Australia. Two years later, he moved to Nashville and formed
a three-piece band, the Ranch, which won over fans with Urban's
lightning lead guitar and his blend of rock and country.

Urban went on to play on Garth Brooks' "Double Live," the Dixie
Chicks' "Fly" and other albums before he set off on his first U.S.
solo project, his 1999 self-titled CD. It scored with the No. 1 "But
for the Grace of God" and other hits "It's a Love Thing" and "Your
Everything" plus a Grammy nomination for best country instrumental
performance for "Rollercoaster."

His second album, 2002's "Golden Road," scored more hits — "Somebody
Like You," "Raining on Sunday," "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me,"
and "You'll Think of Me."

Urban is the complete musical package, too, writing songs that tell
of life, love and drowning sorrows but with an overall upbeat and
positive message that connects with millions of fans.

And, with or without Kidman, he's kicking off 2006 with an extension
to last year's sold-out arena tour with his "Still Alive in '06"
tour with San Antonio homeboy Pat Green opening (but not at the
rodeo). Their only Texas date together is tonight at Ferrell Center
in Waco.

Poison Plans World Tour for 20th Anniversary

By Newsferatu, Writer
Monday, January 30, 2006 @ 11:12 PM

Joins forces with EMI/Capitol and VH1 Classic

From Yahoo! Finance:

Poison, one of hard rock's most iconic, enduring and controversial
bands, celebrates 20 years in 2006. To commemorate this anniversary
milestone and the band's career tally of more than 25 million albums
and DVDs sold around the world, Poison and Capitol/EMI Music Catalog
Marketing have partnered to release The Best Of Poison: 20 Years Of
Rock on April 4. The new 18-track collection packs Poison's biggest
hits and fan favorites and will also debut the group's explosive new
version of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD's `We're An American Band', produced
by Don Was (The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan). In May, Poison will hit
the road for a major 20th anniversary summer tour sponsored by Live
Nation! and presented by VH1 Classic.

With the band's most recent studio album, Hollyweird, along with
Poison Greatest Hits, which just reached double Platinum, and their
Gold-certified Greatest Video Hits DVD, Poison continues on with a
do-it-yourself attitude, also touring to sold-out venues around the
world. Following a 2003 VH1-sponsored tour, Poison co-headlined a
national tour with KISS in 2004.

Poison's 20th anniversary world tour will take the band to major
concert venues around the globe this summer. Tour dates and line-up
details will be announced and posted to the band's official website
as they develop. Visit www.poisonweb.com and www.bretmichaels.com
for the latest Poison news and links to other related websites.

This May, Poison is one of the featured bands in VH1's new
documentary series, Heavy: The Story Of Metal. What Ken Burns did
for jazz, VH1 does for heavy metal - only a lot louder. Premiering
May 1 - 4 (9 PM ET/PT), the four-part series traces the evolution of
heavy metal music and culture, exploring four decades of music.

Perhaps VH1's Behind The Music special on Poison, one of the
network's highest-viewed specials, said it all, encompassing
everything about this band: sex, drugs, fun, violence and rock 'n
roll. Poison's Bret Michaels (lead vocals, guitar), C.C. Deville
(lead guitar, vocals), Bobby Dall (bass) and Rikki Rockett (drums),
crashed hard onto the 1980s LA music scene. Voted Most Popular Band
two years in a row by Music Connection magazine, Poison's unheard of
mix of rock, Americana, pop and punk musical styles, their over-the-
top stage show and blue-collar, hard-working mentality shot the band
into Billboard's Top 5 with the 1986 independent release of Look
What the Cat Dragged In. The singles `Talk Dirty To Me', `I Want
Action', and `I Won't Forget You' all launched into the Top 40, and
the band watched their debut album's sales climb to more than three
million copies. 2006 marks the 20th anniversary of the release.

Poison moved further up the charts and into the headlines with its
smash, acoustic-influenced power ballad, `Every Rose Has Its Thorn'
launching to #1, and the raucous party anthem, `Nothin' But A Good
Time' hitting the Top 10, from the septuple Platinum-certified
(representing more than seven million sold) 1988 follow-up, Open Up
and Say... Ahh!. The Top 5 album spawned several radio and music
video hits, including `Fallen Angel' and `Your Mama Don't Dance'.

After a worldwide mega-tour, Poison returned to the studio with
fabled producer Bruce Fairbairn in Vancouver to record 1990's Flesh
& Blood. Driven by the first single, the blues-rock
influenced `Unskinny Bop' which hit #3, the album reached #2 on
Billboard's Albums chart. Packing a Platinum- certified punch, Flesh
& Blood also contained the singles `Life Goes On', `Ride The Wind'
and the heartfelt `Something To Believe In', written after the death
of a close personal friend. The song was unedited for radio and
lasted six minutes, yet still made it to #4. The band's video
for `Something To Believe In' beat out Faith No More's `Epic' to win
MTV's "World Series Of Rock" Video Of The Year. The single was also
nominated that year at the American Music Awards.

In 1991, after a well-publicized fistfight between Bret Michaels and
C.C. Deville, C.C. left Poison. The band continued to tour arenas
and amphitheatres and recorded the Platinum Native Tongue and Crack
A Smile. After eight years of not speaking, Michaels and Deville met
in 1999 and with their chemistry and friendship quickly rekindled,
the band went into the studio to record Power To The People, and had
one of the most successful reunion tours ever. Poison's original
line-up has remained intact since.

Throughout Poison's career, the band's members have enjoyed
collaborative and solo successes that have taken them from the stage
to the screen and to many points in between. 2006 promises to be a
busy 20th anniversary year for the dynamic members of Poison.

Bret Michaels recently appeared on the cover of Billboard and Radio
& Records magazines for his recently released solo album, Freedom of
Sound, and his 2005 solo tour broke attendance records at several
outdoor venues. Michaels' rootsy Americana style has helped the
album's lead single, `All I Ever Needed', cross from rock to country
airplay charts. Michaels manages his own record label, BMB Records,
and he has also produced and written songs for numerous artists,
including `Love's A Hard Game To Play' from Stevie Nicks' platinum-
certified Timespace: The Best Of Stevie Nicks.

Michaels has made numerous television show guest appearances,
including Yes, Dear and Martial Law on CBS, The Chris Isaak Show on
Showtime, and has been a judge on USA's Nashville Star and a co-host
of the syndicated entertainment news show Access Hollywood. He has
also appeared on VH1's Rock Bodies with Beyonce Knowles, made Spin
magazine's Top 100 Greatest Moments in Rock, has appeared on the
cover of Playgirl magazine and has had his ten-acre Malibu Ranch
featured on MTV's Cribs.

Premiering in March, the new season of VH1's hit show The Surreal
Life features Poison's C.C. Deville with housemates Sherman Helmsley
(The Jeffersons), Steve Harwell (Smashmouth), Florence Henderson
(The Brady Bunch), Tawny Kitaen (of Jaguar hood-writhing Whitesnake
video fame), Andrea Lowell (Playboy TV), and the recently gender-
swapped Alexis Arquette.

In April, Rikki Rockett will make a guest appearance on TLC's new
Wrecks To Riches auto overhaul series, helping to restore a 1969
Dodge Dart before giving Poison's new version of `We're An American
Band' a spin on the car's amped-up sound system.

2006 will definitely be `Nothin' But A Good Time' for Poison and
their fans as they celebrate 20 YEARS OF ROCK!

The Best Of Poison: 20 Years Of Rock tracklisting: `Cry
Tough', `Talk Dirty To Me', `I Want Action', `I Won't Forget
You', `Look What The Cat Dragged In', `Nothin' But A Good
Time', `Fallen Angel', `Every Rose Has Its Thorn', `Your Mama Don't
Dance', `Rock And Roll All Nite', `Unskinny Bop', `Something To
Believe In', `Ride The Wind', `Life Goes On', `Stand', `The Last
Song', `Shooting Star', `We're An American Band' [new recording,
produced by Don Was].
