Hi Paul:

I don't have any real bones, so can't be of much help to you here. Do
any other group members know how to advise Paul with this?

Thanks everybody!

Hello Everyone:

Is there any interest in holding a scheduled member chat to share
important bones info?

I'm thinking it would be a great way to assist other members with
technical questions, share playing techniques and that type of thing.

Jonathan and group; what do you think?

Jonathan, our fearless leader, thank you for considering this idea!

Cordially,
Jennifer Ranger

Me too. I feel isolated out here on the edge of North America. I've heard of
chats but I've never attended one. Do I need special equipment?

Well, the simplest thing to organize would be to use the yahoo groups own
chat system. To participate in this, you need:

1. A yahoo login name. If you signed up for this email list purely through
email, you might not have one. It's easy and free to get one, and if you're
nervous about privacy, go ahead and give them bogus demographic information
(you have to give a real email address, though I haven't heard of any
problems with spam resulting from this). Use your yahoo login to sign into
the group page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rhythmbones/ and click on
"chat" in the left-hand bar.

2. A browser that runs java. Yahoo claims that you need to have:
     * a personal computer running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT, or 2000
     * Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or later) or Netscape
Navigator (version 4.08 or later)
I have no problem running their chat program with Firefox 1.0.6. There may
be other browsers and platforms that work, too. Maybe one of our Mac users
can say whether it works on Mac or not.

Feel free to email me with more questions, of course, offlist, and we'll try
to get it worked out.

As to when-- well, I'd love to participate, but my presence over the next
few days is going to be spotty, between a three-day-long gig at the Newport
Irish festival (it's in the bones calendar!) and Melissa's and my wedding
anniversary. Adele/Vash/Jennifer, do you want to take on the task of
setting up a time? I'd start by figuring out when would be good for the 3
of you, and then announce it to the list so anyone can join. If you give
(say) 24 hours notice, odds are that you'll get at least a few others
popping in. I'll certainly join if I'm able. :)

I have some real bone bones, but I bought them from Lark in the Morning, so
that's no direct help. However, I have learned some things about them. For
one thing, they're made of cow rib bones. Unfortunately, the butcher usually
cuts these particular ribs in half during the butchering process, so you
can't just march into your local butcher shop and ask for some. You'll need
to find a butcher who deals with full beef carcasses or sides of beef.

Once you get the bones, you cut them to length as you like them, and try to
match pairs and such. Can't give you much guidance there, as I think it
would be a fairly subjective process. Once you've got them to length, boil
them seriously for several hours, at least. You need to get out all the
marrow and remove any meat or sinew that's still attached. Ream them out
with a wire brush or something if you have one.

Once you've cleaned them as thoroughly as possible, roast them in a hot oven
to dry them as much as you can, and give them that darkened look. Then
you'll want to store them somewhere away from the house, and not accessible
to dogs, as they will stink for a while yet, until bacteria eat away any
remaining biological material. Then you're ready to play.

Caveat: This is based purely on hearsay and what I've read. I've never
actually done it myself, so you're really on your own.

Thanks to Michael and all you folks for trying to help Paul, Sorry for the
lack of contact on my part over the last few weeks. I believe there is a
fair bit of information on this subject in the archives, but I will try to
answer it a little concisely if I can. I've been making bones from the shin
bone of cows for a while, in the style of Nic Driver and family who for
years made bones which were sold all over the world, including lark in the
morning. These bones would be pure white with no marrow in them, shaped and
polished. It involves getting the whole shin bone, splitting it in half,
cleaning it (if it is not already clean) removing the excess bone and
shaping and polishing it. I believe Nic and his family used whale bone at
one time, but switched some time in the 50's or 60's to cow bone. Cleaning
the bone would be boiling to remove meat etc. and bleaching it some way,
either by boiling with bleach or leaving it to bleach in the sun (very time
consuming). The other consideration is the dust produced from working with
them, not good to breath, obviously. Ribs might be a little easier because
they already have the shape you want. If you have access to the whole ribs,
look for the part that has less curve, and is smaller and easier to hold in
your hands. I had a friend who purchased some ribs sold as dog bones and
they worked out quite well. They too have to be cured, dried as best you
can. I would not suggest putting them in the oven (all due respect Michael)
as they heat too fast and could crack. Paddy Sport, the former All Ireland
Champion talks about leaving them by the peat fire to dry. I have kept
buffalo ribs by the wood stove to dry out, making sure they are not too
close when the stove cranks. Typically you don't take the marrow out,
although I have seen them this way too. Most folks leave the marrow in and
seal them with some type of sealant shelac, or something. Ronnie McShane
gave me a set which were cleaned and shelaced in this way. I think he said
he leaves them in the Garden to dry. Try the archives for more info and good
luck, Steve Brown

Jennifer and Jon, Sorry I couldn't make the chat, I meant to mention
something before hand. I would say that 7pm your time is 10 pm our time and
for early risers it gets a little tough. What could be a good compromise,
even 6pm your time might be a little more doable for me Jennifer, I don't
know how other folks feel about it. Thanks for the suggestion, though. take

Hi Steven:

Yes, I could do a Monday evening at 6:00 pm.

Other nights I'm either teaching music classes, performing or working on mixing
our band's brand new CD! But Mondays could work nicely.

Thank you.

Hey Everybody,

I would encourage all of you folks to come to the chat tommorow night 9pm
Eastern Standard Time to join in the second rhythm bones chat. We all owe
Jennifer a big thanks for suggesting this interesting aspect of our site
here. I personally will stay awake all the way to 9pm and beyond to take
part and would love to see all or at least some of you participating. Please
see Jonathan's explanation of how to join the chat below. Just for the
record that's:
September 12th. at 9pm est ( 6pm pmt) Looking forward to it,

Steve Brown

Well, the simplest thing to organize would be to use the yahoo groups own
chat system. To participate in this, you need:

   1. A yahoo login name. If you signed up for this email list purely
through
email, you might not have one. It's easy and free to get one, and if
you're
nervous about privacy, go ahead and give them bogus demographic
information
(you have to give a real email address, though I haven't heard of any
problems with spam resulting from this). Use your yahoo login to sign
into
the group page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rhythmbones/ and click on
   "chat" in the left-hand bar.

   2. A browser that runs java. Yahoo claims that you need to have:
       * a personal computer running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT, or 2000
       * Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or later) or Netscape
   Navigator (version 4.08 or later)
I have no problem running their chat program with Firefox 1.0.6. There
may
be other browsers and platforms that work, too. Maybe one of our Mac
users
can say whether it works on Mac or not.

Feel free to email me with more questions, of course, offlist, and we'll
try
   to get it worked out
Jon Danforth

CHAT

         * a personal computer running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT, or 2000
         * Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or later) or Netscape
     Navigator (version 4.08 or later)
I have no problem running their chat program with Firefox 1.0.6. There
   may
be other browsers and platforms that work, too. Maybe one of our Mac
   users
can say whether it works on Mac or not.

Feel free to email me with more questions, of course, offlist, and we'll
   try
     to get it worked out

Hey Jennifer - it was great to chat with you while I lasted -
unfortunately, I was cut off by a ringing phone. We'll be in touch,
I'm sure. I tend to check this group most days just to see what's
going on with fellow bone players.

Hi Teresa:

Yes, it was great meeting you in the chat room! I check in often as well
poking around looking for new & helpful information!

By the way, I'm also teaching a child to play the bones: my 9 year old grandson!

Hi again Jennifer-

9 is such a great age for so many things, but especially for learning
bones (or any instrument for that matter). It's really great that
you're teaching him the bones - how is your child taking the extra
noise in the house?
My daughter is 4.5 & can make the bones clack a bit but my nieces
(now age 8 & 11) can really make them sing! I don't know about your
experience, but I've noticed that they get so excited about making
their first triplet - or any sound, really. Now that I think about
it, so did I just one short year ago (I guess age doesn't really
matter here). You've mentioned that you play h. dulcimer - how long
have you been at that? Is that your primary instrument? I play a
bit (teaching myself) & have a Hudson. Again, it was a pleasure to
chat w/ you & Steve.

Hi Teri:

Yes, it was a pleasure to chat with you and Steve as well!
Fortunately my grandson, who is 9, loves hearing music in our house and he joins
our band with his ukulele on many occasions!

Yes, hammered dulcimer is my main instrument, but I also play some others like
fretted dulcimer, finger cymbals, autoharp, ukulele and doumbek - oops, forgot
the piano! Our retail store has a music studio inside and I teach music lessons
all week long - how lucky am I?!

Music is a real pleasure, isn't it?

Thanks Teri!

I just received a link from a friend of mine to a web site that makes public
a large number of old Canadian recordings, including a bunch that include
bones-playing. To find these, go to the URL below, click on the "search
collection" link, then the search link, and search for "os" (22 selections)
or "castagnettes" (89 selections). A lot of these feature bones playing
with accordion, and a few feature bones with other instruments (fiddle,
etc.) Let me know if you find any other search terms that turn up useful
cuts on this site!

younger kids, and

Hello Everyone:

Well, here we are into fall already and our band continues serenading
(sp?) on the streets in Old Town Monrovia, CA. This is our 7th year.
If anyone lives nearby please come down and say 'howdy' - and bring
your bones!

Anybody else jamming on Friday nights?

Boiling is not so good idea.
After boiling bones are little strange in touch. I
don't know how to describe it. It's all because of
fact that 130 degrees C is a critical teperature for
bones.
I make bones with cow shin bones, and I did it only
once it's hard to polish that bones and after few
moths of using they still feel strange.
Perhaps I could add here few photos of bones that I've
made althouth that all that I've made recently are
already gone cause I've sold them or give to friends
;-)
