Catfish found his calling early on. While growing up in Detroit, he was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues while his contemporaries gravitated to the Beatles. In the late 1960’s he formed the Catfish Band and led them out of Detroit into national prominence.
By 1973 Catfish had settled into Washington, DC where he was packing them in at Desperado’s, Childe Harold and the Cellar Door with what the Washington City Paper describes as "his cheerfully muscular blues & rockin’ boogie." He made a few friends along the way, too. He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Their final tour hit twenty one cities and sold out every show.
By 1982 Catfish had headed west to California where he lived for the next 17 years. Along with Paul Barrere he formed the Bluesbusters in 1984. They recorded two albums for Landslide Records and toured for many years, until Little Feat was reformed in the late 1980’s. They still get together from time to time when their schedules permit and tour today.
In 1999 he was performing solo acoustic, as well as with his electric band. He also founded the Hillbilly Funk Allstars with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, and Vassar Clements.
According to Richard Harrington of the Washington Post, “Mason is a triple threat as singer, guitarist and songwriter, and she's able to hold her own in both band and solo settings." She's an impeccable guitarist. When performing solo or as part of her duo, she performs traditional blues. But, when performing with her trio or quartet, she "steps into" contemporary blues-rock .
Mason has made repeated appearances at venues such as The Birchmere, Blues Alley, Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival,
In 2005, Mason and her band released "Live at Blues Alle" - a compelling live performance recorded at the legendary Blues Alley and winner of WAMA's 2005 Best Blues Recording award. In 2004 she released "Lonesome Is I", a warm and soulful collection of solo acoustic country blues and winner of WAMA's 2004 Best Blues Recording award. And, in 2001 she released "Bendin' the Blues," which was her debut album as lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with her band and winner of 2001 WAMA’s Best Blues Recording award.
Playing completely by ear, and with passion and power possessed by few performing songwriters, Pops Walker is something of an enigma. At his live performances, listeners who hear him for the first time are usually stunned. A typical response is, “That’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen or heard – why haven’t we heard of you before?”
The answer is simple. Until September, 2003, Walker was a paralegal, for the US Army, working in the Pentagon. It was simply a stroke of luck and karma that he wasn’t killed on 9/11/01. But that’s another story. But there’s the answer to that often posed question of “Where have you been?”
It wasn’t until 2003 that he burst onto the folk music scene. He had been laying the foundations for years for this breakout. Before then, he performed only two or three times a year, but kept perfecting his skills as a songwriter, singer and especially as a guitarist. He was waiting for the right moment to enter the music scene – and that time came the day he retired from serving his country. And indeed, the very same day that he signed out of the Army, he was the opening act for the Mountain Stage NewSong Festival. He walked out of one life and happily into another.
Since then, things have gone well for him. He’s released three more CDs, (a total of five now), and has had the privilege of playing the same venues as Leo Kotke, Kathy Mattea, John Gorka, Richie Havens, Darryl Scott, and a slew of other great songwriters and performers. And while it was the folk circuit that opened their doors to him at first, the blues lovers discovered him shortly thereafter.
With Pops, you can expect a high-energy, mesmerizing performance of original songs with an old chestnut or two included. He performs with every inch of his being and his joy is contagious. He engages the crowd with dashes of humor, anecdotes, and bits of background about his tunes. And, he does it in such a way that most of the audience feel that he’s talking directly with each of them. He makes it personal. Listening to his CDs is a treat, but watching him perform is an absolute joy.
