Melanie Mason, Pops Walker & Catfish Hodge to perform at final 2006  RiverHouse Concert

Avanti's Resturant, Charles Town WV

Saturday, October 28 at 8:00PM, the RiverHouse Concert at Avanti's Restaurant in Charles Town, WV will present three fantastic blues artists, a guest appearance by a six-man a cappella group, and a chance for everyone there to join in the grass roots effort of The Squeaky Wheel Tour to gain attention for missing persons.

RiverHouse producer, Cheryl Mansley, is very proud to present blues legend Catfish Hodge, three time Wammie Award winner Melanie Mason, and the mesmerizing, high-energy, blues artist Pops Walker all in one night!  "This is the last RiverHouse Concert for 2006," says Mansley, "and I wanted to go out with a bang!"

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, "Catfish on stage is like a twelve gauge shot gun of emotion going off!"  Catfish Hodge has been called an "American folk blues hero" and has been a mainstay on the American Blues music scene for three decades now!  He has twenty two albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of original material. "Catfish Blues" and "Like A Big Dog Barkin’" on the Wildcat label, and "Eyewitness Blues" on Genes CD were released in 1994 and 1995.  His first album of children’s songs "Adventures at Catfish Pond", on Music for Little People label was released in May of 1996. The album won the NAPA Golden Award as best children’s music of 1996. His most recent release "Bare Necessities"(on Chicken Legs Music) finds him in a solo acoustic setting with lowdown funky blues and soulful ballads.

Catfish found his calling early on. While growing up in Detroit, he was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues while his contemporaries gravitated to the Beatles. In the late 1960’s he formed the Catfish Band and led them out of Detroit into national prominence.

By 1973 Catfish had settled into Washington, DC where he was packing them in at Desperado’s, Childe Harold and the Cellar Door with what the Washington City Paper describes as "his cheerfully muscular blues & rockin’ boogie."  He made a few friends along the way, too. He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Their final tour hit twenty one cities and sold out every show.

By 1982 Catfish had headed west to California where he lived for the next 17 years. Along with Paul Barrere he formed the Bluesbusters in 1984. They recorded two albums for Landslide Records and toured for many years, until Little Feat was reformed in the late 1980’s. They still get together from time to time when their schedules permit and tour today.

In 1999 he was performing solo acoustic, as well as with his electric band. He also founded the Hillbilly Funk Allstars with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, and Vassar Clements.

Today Catfish Hodge lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where he says "the air is fresh and the mountains are good for the healing of the soul." After thirty years on the road and twenty two albums having been released, he is still electrifying music fans with his powerful and spiritual style of original music!

For years, Melanie Mason has been racking up Wammie Awards (Washington Area Music Association Awards) for Best Blues Recording.  She is the 2006 Top-Selling Blues Artist for over 5 years at CD Baby.com and was the Winner at the 2003 D.C. Blues Society's International Blues Challenge Competition.  She was also in the 2003 Emmy award-winning PBS WETA-TV ads promoting Scorsese's "The Blues."

According to Richard Harrington of the Washington Post, “Mason is a triple threat as singer, guitarist and songwriter, and she's able to hold her own in both band and solo settings."   She's an impeccable guitarist.  When performing solo or as part of her duo, she performs traditional blues.  But, when performing with her trio or quartet, she "steps into" contemporary blues-rock .

Mason has made repeated appearances at venues such as The Birchmere, Blues Alley, Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival, BlackRock Center for the Arts, DC Blues Festival / Carter Barron, and the National Capital BBQ.  And, she's opened for legends
Robert Cray, Taj Mahal, Don McLean, Robin Trower, and Little Feat’s Barrere & Tackett.

In 2005, Mason and her band released "Live at Blues Alle" - a compelling live performance recorded at the legendary Blues Alley and winner of WAMA's 2005 Best Blues Recording award. In 2004 she released "Lonesome Is I", a warm and soulful collection of solo acoustic country blues and winner of WAMA's 2004 Best Blues Recording award.  And, in 2001 she released "Bendin' the Blues," which was her debut album as lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with her band and winner of 2001 WAMA’s Best Blues Recording award.

Playing completely by ear, and with passion and power possessed by few performing songwriters, Pops Walker is something of an enigma. At his live performances, listeners who hear him for the first time are usually stunned. A typical response is, “That’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen or heard – why haven’t we heard of you before?”

The answer is simple. Until September, 2003, Walker was a paralegal, for the US Army, working in the Pentagon. It was simply a stroke of luck and karma that he wasn’t killed on 9/11/01. But that’s another story. But there’s the answer to that often posed question of “Where have you been?”

It wasn’t until 2003 that he burst onto the folk music scene. He had been laying the foundations for years for this breakout. Before then, he performed only two or three times a year, but kept perfecting his skills as a songwriter, singer and especially as a guitarist. He was waiting for the right moment to enter the music scene – and that time came the day he retired from serving his country. And indeed, the very same day that he signed out of the Army, he was the opening act for the Mountain Stage NewSong Festival.  He walked out of one life and happily into another.

Since then, things have gone well for him. He’s released three more CDs, (a total of five now), and has had the privilege of playing the same venues as Leo Kotke, Kathy Mattea, John Gorka, Richie Havens, Darryl Scott, and a slew of other great songwriters and performers. And while it was the folk circuit that opened their doors to him at first, the blues lovers discovered him shortly thereafter.

With Pops, you can expect a high-energy, mesmerizing performance of original songs with an old chestnut or two included. He performs with every inch of his being and his joy is contagious. He engages the crowd with dashes of humor, anecdotes, and bits of background about his tunes. And, he does it in such a way that most of the audience feel that he’s talking directly with each of them. He makes it personal. Listening to his CDs is a treat, but watching him perform is an absolute joy.

The Fishermen, a six-man a cappella gospel group, will join the music lineup for the night with a guest performance during intermission.  The Fishermen - John Holdway, Andrew Shifler, Bruce Burley, Perry Kirkham, Dick Palmer, and Dave Smith - possess a wide range of backgrounds and vocal styles.  Their intense love of music in song brought them together.  They offer refreshing and exciting renditions of a variety of music in three, four, five and sometimes six-part harmony.  Performances by the FISHERMEN of old and new gospel,  as well as popular music, is truly soul stirring - an experience not to be missed.

This RiverHouse Concert will be part of the GINA For Missing Persons - Squeaky Wheel Tour.  GINA For Missing Persons was created by Jannel Rap, whose sister,

Gina Bos, vanished after a gig in Lincoln, NE on October 17, 2000.  The Squeaky Wheel Tour is a grass roots effort to gain attention for 100's of missing children and adults who's disappearances do not have the scandal nor intrigue that garners national attention. The Tour is comprised of musicians in locations across the United States, Europe, and Australia donating time during their performances to profile missing persons in their area in an effort to bring one home. The RiverHouse Concerts join the Squeaky Wheel Tour as producer Cheryl Mansley will profile Victor Dwight Shoemaker, Jr., missing since May 1, 1994, from Short Mountain, West Virginia

For more information about GINA For Missing Persons and the Squeaky Wheel Tour, as well as a daily updated list of the musical artists, locations, dates and most importantly the missing to be profiled, please go to www.411Gina.org.

Admission to this RiverHouse Show is $10/person at the door.  Doors open at 7:00pm.  Dinner and drinks will be available for purchase.  Avanti's Restaurant is located at 119 E. Washington Street in Charles Town, WV across from the Charles Town Library.  Avanti's cuisine consists of a medley of Northern and Southern Italian
dishes and a sampling of Mediterranean favorites, and the menu emphasizes fresh, tasty food that is made-to-order.
