Hi folks,
Maybe some of you have come across the guitarist (and violinist,
keyboardist, etc, etc) Fred Frith over the years. I suppose for want
of a better term that he could be called avant garde, experimental
.... He's probably best known, at least in the UK, for his work with
Henry Cow, but he also made a number of "solo" albums (two classics
from the late 1970s and early 1980s are "Gravity" and "Speechless")
and many other albums in collaboration with other musicians. It's
sometimes pretty difficult and elusive stuff to get accustomed to (as
he writes in the notes to "Speechless", the theme of the album is
"remaining always on the edge of being understood"), but if one does
manage it it's well worth the reward....
Anyway, out of curiosity I looked up his official website the other day:
http://www.fredfrith.com/
and found out to my surprise that he's recently put out an
all-acoustic CD called "To Sail, To Sail", which evidently includes a
hommage to Robbie Basho. I've not been able to get hold of a copy yet,
but have found out that the track listing is as follows:
Because Your Mama Wants You Home
Weather Gauge
Reconstructed
Life on Venus
Mondays
Life-Enhancing Interior
First Light
Jeratch Orchestra
Wrong Door
Circuit Breakers and Fuses
Slightest Shiver
Sheep's Head, 1963
Life by Another Name
Dog Watch
Hopscotch Horizon
King Dawn
I don't recognise any of these as being a Basho title, so I wonder
which of them is the actual hommage ....
Anyone else come across the CD, I wonder?
