Re: [robbiebasho_forum] A list of Basho's live performances
You might be surprised what's out there. Christopher Hjort recently published a day-by-day account of the Byrds, 40 years after the fact. That someone could do that for, say, the Beatles or Dylan, is not remarkable, but the Byrds were only briefly popular, before any serious music journalism existed, and not often the subject of journalistic inquiry after the original group splintered in late 1967,
I suspect you would have more success looking in underground newspapers like the San Francisco Oracle, Berkeley Tribe, and the East Village Other. For example, http://www.regentpress.net/oracle/index.html has a CD containing the entire run of the Oracle. A lot of that material was shared via the Underground Press Syndicate.
College newspapers and even yearbooks might be helpful. At least my college yearbook featured various concerts and other events.
You might also try certain music magazines, which may have ads or even lists of concerts. For example, each issue of Dirty Linen has a couple of dozen pages of upcoming concerts, but that magazine only goes back to 82 or 83. Older magazines, going back well into the 50s, include Broadside and Sing Out!
You would probably have to access a lot of that stuff by microfilm or microfiche. There is far more stuff that is not on-line than you will ever find available on the internet -- but you can have them delivered to your local library via interlibrary loan. My brother was the founder, publisher and editor of the Columbus (Ohio) Free Press, and was working on a six or seven volume compilation of that paper when he passed away in 2006. Writers are pack-rats -- and the underground journalists particularly believed in what they were doing and saved that stuff.
