This pretty much clears everything up:
"Kiyohide drew the map for Bill Bellmont and Fantasy Records, and was
very surprised to see it actually used in the liner notes! The map was
only drawn to show the relationship in Tokyo of the Folklore Centre
and the Matsuo Basho museum. There is no alter to Robbie Basho, I
think you're right, Fahey must have gotten confused with the
"hermitage" pointed out on the map, that's actually the museum.
Also, Kioyhide showed me a snippet of his collection of Basho
memorabillia, including an article on him with interview and
description of the various colours and moods of different keys from
Frets magazine, May 1981. I took digital photos of these and you can
read all the text, pretty much. He also gave me his "paper" that he
presented on Robbie Basho AT the Matsuo Basho museum last year (yeah,
I can see why Fahey would have got confused...), and a copy of the
Japan Times with a little bit about the presentation that took place."
