Greetings to all those who have joined the forum recently, and thanks
especially to Rich for posting some really fascinating writing in the
last few days. It's very encouraging to notice how a few well-aimed
comments and insights can really open things up. Thanks.
My apologies to all members here for being a pretty lousy 'moderator'
of this group lately. University has almost completely submerged my
efforts and endeavours regarding "the life and work of Robbie Basho",
and whatever things I was pursuing prior to beginning my studies were
forgotten almost instantly. For a short time I was quite active in
pursuing and pestering, in a typically ignorant and amateurish way,
those that I hoped could provide some insight. I made a few emails
here and there and was on the whole very encouraged by the response.
I offer my own small and insignificant experience as an example only
to indicate that some form of combined sustained effort in generating
interest and information centred around this forum could really lead
somewhere. The fact that we now have 30 members to the group surely
proves something.
I would very much like to get a picture of the areas of interest and
experience provided by our members- why did you join this group? What
is it especially that you would like to find out? Do you have any
experience, even if only on a personal level, that you would like to
share?
I am particularly encouraged to read that Rich shares a few of my own
interests, namely the desire to get to grips with the mystery
surrounding Basho's belongings, as well as his desire to work up a
collection of transcriptions. The latter especially is an area in
which it is possible to contribute from a distance. If you check back
to some of the first messages on the forum you will find a list of
guitar tunings used by Basho in particular songs- this list is
incomplete and no doubt riddled with errors, but it may be of some
use still.
Also, if there are any able Wikipedians among you, I recommend you
visit the Robbie Basho page there- I managed to do a bit but don't
really feel qualified to go into any biographical detail. This is
also an area that needs a lot of attention!
Going back to the point about transcription- I feel it would be
beneficial for as many as are willing to address this. If a few of us
could take the time to work up some initial drafts and ideas relating
to transcription, it has the potential to become quite an exciting
project. This is also an aspect in which I have been woefully lazy
and am distinctly unqualified to undertake, but every little helps! I
PROMISE to post something, anything, at some point during the
christmas holidays.
Thanks again for the recent comments, and my apologies if this
message comes across as just a little intense, manic, or evangelical-
that has not been my intention :)
Yours,
Robbie
